The 2020 Chemistry Faculty Jobs List: 508 research/teaching positions and 49 teaching faculty positions

The 2020 Chemistry Faculty Jobs List (curated by Andrew Spaeth and myself) has 508 research/teaching positions and 49 teaching assistant professor positions.

Want to add a position? Here's a Google Form to enter positions. In 2019-2020, we will be adding teaching professor positions, targeting positions that demonstrate an intention to renew permanently, 3 year terms and a promotion ladder and/or are titled "assistant teaching professor" or "associate teaching professor." As of 9/20/19, we are adding community college positions if they explicitly offer tenure.

See an error? Please contact us at chemjobber@gmail.com

On January 8, 2018, the 2018 Chemistry Faculty Jobs List had 530 positions.

To the person who asked about the Old Dominion status on the previous thread, I think there's still time, since it's only been around 5 weeks since the priority date and that included Christmas/New Years. 1. It is interesting how there are the people each year that get interviews everywhere. Not sure where they get the magic sauce from, but I would like some. I always thought it was a bit over blown when I heard people talking about THE ONE, but it is absolutely the truth. Crazy stuff.

      Delete
    2. I would be interested to know what the range of institutions they've gotten onsites at. Is it mostly R1s or does it span the gamut from R1 to PUI. Sometimes I think universities don't realize that they're punching above their weight and end up bringing in 3-4 candidates that will all get better offers. They don't realize they are the "safety school" for all these candidates. I know this happened 2 years in a row at a nearby school and they still haven't filled the position, as far as I know.

      Delete
    3. I've met the unicorn of a particular year before. Definitely deserved. Clear cut above the rest. A 1% chance at that person is better than a 20% chance at everyone else in the field. Same reason that the best QB prospect that is a senior in high school gets scholarship offers from 50 colleges.

      Delete
    4. how many onsites has your labmate gone to by now? I would think he/she probably has an offer by now? tell him/her to cancel the rest of the onsites, so that i can get an offer. but 22 is still very impressive!

      Delete
    5. @5:29. My labmate is interviewing at every top department and only applied to top 30 places.

@6:08. Yes, my labmate is great, but it's funny because I've just viewed them as a peer/friend and we've published coauthored all our papers during our postdoc together, so I also feel like we're equals, but clearly NOT.

@8:27. 4 onsites so far, has second visits scheduled for 3 of the 4. Verbal offer from one.

      Delete
    6. Wow...so 18 more onsites to go, how's that humanly possible? Assuming your labmate does 2 interviews a week, it will be now until the very end of Feb. That is not counting the 2nd visits!

Also for the general forum, does 2nd visit usually mean an offer is more or less good?

      Delete
    7. I discourage further divulging of specific details of the relevant person's job search.

    8. After talking about this sort of thing with a few PIs it seems like even at top schools this causes frustration. Specifically, if someone with 20+ interviews gets an offer from say a top 10 institute it seems only logical to cancel any on-sites at institutes that are ranked below this because let's be honest they probably don't have a shot. I understand going until you have this cut-off offer, but after that you are keeping the lower ranked institutes in the lurch and jamming up the works.

    9. Anon @10:19, why do then these schools interview the same people? With >100 applications, I do not believe that there are no other qualified candidates. I think it may be just a matter of looking beyond Nature/Science publications or a famous advisor.

    10. I have identified some aspects that they are taking in consideration -1) is the PhD school in the top 10? 2) is the postdoc school in the top 10? 3) does she/he had a applied to grants? 4) is the candidates US citizen/ resident? 5) is the candidate a woman with good publication record? 6) if male - does he have a high impact factor paper that diffentiate him? ---- if yes to all you get 20 calls...

    1. It seems that it depends on the department. In my case, I asked to spread it out over 5 years and use half in the first year and divide the remainder evenly for each following year. But I know others who needed big pieces of equipment and used it all upfront. It just depends on your research needs and the department/university.

      Delete
    2. Definitely varies by department. The advice I've gotten is to plan to spend it in 2 years and to expect to negotiate for a third year if you feel you need it. Some departments will have a hard deadline on when it should be spent by.

    1. It refers to an interview where you are physically on campus. Many universities and colleges will first do a round of interviews that involves a video conference call (remote interviews). They will then take the candidates that they liked from that round of remote interviews and invite them on campus to give a seminar on prior research (grad/postdoc) and a seminar on proposed research. This interview is called the onsite and people differentiate between onsites and remote interviews because onsites are more or less required to receive an offer. However, due to the number of positions available in a department on a given year, most onsite interviews do not lead to an offer for a professorship by the school.

    4. Thanks, all!

@1:18 Brief summary: 27 applications, 12 phone/web interviews, 5 on-sites (although this offer is from the 3rd, and I will be canceling the last two). I did not get offers from the first two visits. I felt my experience between all the phone, web, and in-person interviews was fairly consistent regarding types of questions, start-up funds, teaching load, etc. It's been stressful, and I'm definitely glad it's over! It's so strange to me that within a pool of fairly similar schools, some won't contact you at all and others will have you at the top of their list of candidates. I will say my research fits in quite nicely with the department I'm joining, and I also have several years of full-time teaching experience, so I think both of those factors really helped. I'm just finishing up a three-year contract at another PUI, so it's a relief to know that I have some job security and can put down roots somewhere. Let me know if you want to know anything else!

      Delete
    5. @10:25 Congrats on the new offer! That's awesome! Are you a visiting assistant professor at your current PUI? Do you think that experience helped and is that something you would recomend to a postdoc like me with limited teaching experience? (I'm also interested in PUIs)

      Delete
    6. @10:40 I am not the OP but I am at a PUI and I would say that going the VAP route might help your chances at teaching-focused institutions and will probably hurt your chances at PUIs with higher research expectations unless you manage to stay research active while visiting.

    2. I was invited to two onsites the first time I applied. One school really liked me but did not pick me in the end. All committee members replied to me and provided some feedback. The other school did not actually like me so they did not bother to reply. I guess it is really up to how they like you and how free they are.

      Delete
    3. Same here... During my Skype interviews the professor leading the search told me - you will for sure hear from us - I never heard anything back :(

      Delete
    4. It might be better to contact directly those faculty that you had the best “connection” with. If that includes the search chair, even better. Also offer to have a call to discuss it, feedback may be easier given by phone than in email.

      Delete
    5. You can potentially also get feedback through an advisor or letter writer, if any of them have ties or know people at the department where you interviewed, they might be able to find out something on your behalf.

      Delete
    6. As a former search committee chair, I would highly doubt you would get any feedback. In all honesty, I wouldn't have much time to go through each person that wasn't selected and review what did and didn't work and what needed to be improved. In fact, my opinion may not matter much anyway. What didn't work for my institution may be perfectly fine with another - most interviews are pretty subjective anyway. So, you can contact and you may get someone to respond, but doubt it would be very in-depth or helpful - unless you were able to get a couple at different institutions that showed a pattern of something. I would suggest just moving on.

  33. Is it possible to request (to see them) to the universities the submitted recommendation letters from my references? I suspect that one of my references submitted a bad rec letter:(

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am sorry to hear your situation, but unfortunately, I highly doubt you will get it. The whole application is suppose to be confidential. If you can request the letter, it will also defeat the purpose of the letter's independence/honest assessment, which is important from the university's perspective.
It is a bit late in the game, but I will say that you can request this letter to be replaced with another for any universities that you think still have hope. Good luck!

      Delete
    2. After having checked the box that you waive the right to access letters, I strongly recommend you do not try to do so. If word of that gets around, you'll quickly have three bad letters.

However, as per the thread above about emailing for feedback, you could reach out to one of the schools you interviewed at, preferably someone you had a good rapport with, and ask for feedback on your package. You could specify something to the effect that you are considering recruiting another reference and ask if they have input. They then might be able to alert you to who writes a weak letter without breaching confidentiality.

Emailing schools that did not contact you is unlikely to get a response, which leads to an alternative suggestion: schedule debrief meetings with your referees and ask them for their honest assessment of your packet and prospects. Hopefully these meetings will give you a lot of constructive feedback and clarity for your next round of applications, improved letters, or an indication if a letter writer wants out. Good luck.

  41. What is the general verdict on applying for temporary visiting assistant professor positions? I'm interested in pursuing a tenure-track faculty position at PUIs. I have NOT taught a course as the instructor of record in graduate school. I am currently a postdoc. Any advice? experience?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Can teach teach while at your postdoc? Either at your institution or perhaps at a local community college or other institution. If it's at another institution you could teach night/weekend courses in case your current PI is not supportive of that sort of thing...

      Delete
    2. It probably depends a bit on the type of PUI you are interested in. I'm at a research-intensive PUI, and we don't have any expectations that an applicant will have been an instructor of record (I hadn't been before getting hired!). We generally have the belief that if you are thoughtful and passionate about teaching, you can learn to be a better teacher, and there are lots of resources available to help you improve.

We also expect that you run a research group with undergraduate students that results in publications, conference presentation, grant applications, etc -- and we can't teach you to do research in your field (especially when departments are relatively small, you might not have many colleagues with similar expertise even to bounce ideas off of). Overall, we're looking for a record of research productivity as a graduate student and postdoc. At my school, you would be a more competitive applicant by staying as a postdoc and continuing to publish as opposed to moving on to a VAP position.

      Delete
    3. I did that. I started applying for faculty positions at PUIs during my second really research-heavy postdoc, and didn't get anything. One thing that kept coming during interviews was: 1) was I serious about wanting to teach since all my focus up to that point was research, 2) did I actually like teaching since I had never been a "real" instructor (TAing and recitation sections didn't count), and 3) was applying to a PUI just a stepping stone that I would abandon as soon as I could find a more research-oriented position.

So, I did a year as a visiting assistant prof to get more experience and to show that I was serious about wanting to focus primarily on teaching. The next year, I applied to 5-6 PUIs that I was really interested in, got phone/skype interview for all of them, two on-sites, and one offer, which I accepted. But, I think a big factor was taking off a year of research to do the visiting teaching gig. The PUI I accepted is mostly teaching-emphasis with light research (mostly during 8 weeks over the summer), so my having shown that I was was "serious" about teaching was huge to them.

      Delete
    4. I had the same experience as Anon 2:01pm. I had a postdoc at a PUI and it wasn't until I got a VAP (at a barely-PUI school) that I got any real responses. Applying as a postdoc, I applied to ~20 schools, got 5 phone interviews and 1 on-site (that I ended up turning down). Applying as a VAP, I applied to ~13 schools, got 11 phone interviews, 4 on-sites, and an offer. No other significant change to my credentials. I honestly don't find being an instructor of record terribly different than being a TA but that's largely where I did my PhD rather than a typical experience. Some VAPs also have the opportunity to do research so it's not necessarily a break from research (mine is very open to it but provided no funding).

Just a word of advice: be cautious about taking a VAP because some schools really exploit them so ask a LOT of questions during the interview (teaching >18 credit hours a semester, expecting more service than TT faculty)

      Delete
    5. I was able to get multiple offers from PUIs this cycle with only a research intensive postdoc. I have never been an instructor of record. I think you need to tailor your applications carefully and make it clear that you are passionate about teaching. I sought out minor teaching opportunities in my postdoc (e.g. guest lecturing) to highlight that even though I am passionate about research, teaching is also very important to me. If you do that, then it seems like a VAP is not necessary. I got offers from a range of PUI (research intensive to mostly teaching).

      Delete
    6. Echoing what 11:29 just said. I also had multiple offers from PUIs this cycle and only did a research intensive postdoc and was never an instructor of record. I did have lots of other teaching experience in grad school though to show I was passionate about teaching (head TA, guest lecturing, courses in pedagogy, facilitating pedagogy workshops, etc.) You don't need to be IOR to get an offer from a PUI.

      Delete
    7. Same as 11:29 and 11:42 here. Also no IOR, but really did my research about effective teaching methods and had specific examples in my applications about how I have used them (in discussion/recitation) or would use them. Anyone can say "active learning", but I was told that the specificity in my materials sold it.

      Delete
    8. Starting at a PUI next fall without a postdoc (def not a research intensive PUI but that's what I wanted). My strategy was look around for opportunities to do any curriculum development / chem ed related projects that are heavy on implementation / guest lectures. Then be careful to talk about the "chem ed" techniques you use without saying "chem ed". That scares off a lot of old professors.

While I didn't actually teach the courses I was a TA for, being able to say that I was helping out with curriculum development went a long way I think.

      Delete
    9. I was offered and accepted a PUI TT position a little bit earlier this hiring season. I did two VAPs and am currently a post doc. My undergrad alma mater is a top-20-ranked liberal arts college and I've gotten a lot of advice from my former professors. My impression is that they basically require a postdoc, candidates certainly must show enthusiasm for teaching, and a VAP is a bonus but not required. They have the same idea as @11:30 AM: They expect high quality teaching and research, they can help you with the teaching.

My new school expects scholarly work, but is way flexible about what counts as scholarly work and views research as primarily a student learning opportunity. For my research talk they were most concerned with how I would help students develop transferable skills. So their priorities are closer to the teaching side. I'm also going to help in developing new programs and courses, so I think my experience as an instructor of record was pretty valuable to them.

If I was in your shoes, I'd certainly be applying for TT positions now.
If I didn't get anything now and was interested in research intense PUIs, then I'd stay in the postdoc world and maybe look at a teaching+research postdoc.
If I didn't get anything now and was interested in teaching intense PUIs, then I'd look for a VAP both to help with my resume in the next hiring cycle and for my own experience.

I am really glad I did my VAPs, because I found them to be quite different than being a TA, and a much better preview of what my future. In my case it reinforced my career goal.

    1. Having seen many seminars of some people and being familiar close with some of their research (not only at the application stage, but also later, when they are PIs), I can tell you that some people are very good at selling their research, but not necessarily better at doing research. And some people oversell some past projects and present them as exclusively their own, when it was a collaborative effort. You don't necessarily see the whole picture, when you just see their seminars.

    9. In December I had one of my on-sites at a big public school which conducted three searches and they explicitly told me that all decisions will be made in the beginning of February after they interview all candidates for all searches. Another school told me that their decision will be ready in late January (interviews since December as well) because of two searches. If a school has multiple searches they are more likely to spend more time as they need to plan the startup budgets for all offers at the same time. Also some schools which scheduled interviews later had to move some of interviews to January because some candidates were not available for December anymore.

      Delete
    10. Thanks for this @2:53.I hadn't considered many of these things

      Delete
  67. Ah, then never mind. I thought it might have been where I had interviewed, which was also just before Christmas. That department also shut down over the break, and I was told the earliest they would reconvene to discuss candidates was the 15 January. Might be the same in your situation perhaps? I presume they didn't mention anything at the interview?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. OK. They did not mention the timeline of decision during the interview. One junior faculty told me his offer was given in the end of January last year. Perhaps I have the same situation?

  69. Any opinions on start-up package price for a strong R2? I guess I was thinking roughly $500-600k. This would obviously depend on a few factors like TA support etc. but does that seem like the right ball park?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That could be the right ball park, but it is going to depend on the school, historical startups in the department, considerations from other parts of campus, etc. I would say you should probably widen that range on the lower end ($400-600K). Another thing to consider with smaller schools is that they probably don't have the room to move all that much in negotiations compared to bigger departments. They might have completely tapped what they can to offer you what they are offering.

You make a good point though to consider other factors. How are TAs allotted? Is there a preference towards jr faculty? What are upkeep costs? Gasses, waste disposal, instrument usage, etc. Are there department or university resources for internal grants?

      Delete
    2. You might be selling yourself short. I interviewed at a strong R2 that was looking for more like ~700K-900K, this was a public university. Obviously, it varies. It is also worth carefully considering what shared facilities they actually have. If they don't have some capabilities you are used to, you might have to spend to deal with that.

      Delete
    3. I have already proposed an upper $900K number for my start-up to a public R2 during an on-site visit and no one's eyes were bulging. (There was even talk of a recent hire getting $1.2 mil because of some sophisticated equipment needs.) It is far worse to low-ball yourself than the opposite. Aim high! Then you can negotiate down, letting the chair cite benefits like TA support, shared facilities, etc. to chip away at it. I wouldn't assume those as given ahead of discussion with the chair. Then those benefits can then be written into the contract.

      Delete
    4. @2:36pm What type of chemistry do you do? The value must be different for each field yes?

      Delete
    5. Yeah, it's going to be super variable. I interviewed at a R1 state school 5 years ago, that might overlap in chem department quality with strong R2s. I really lowballed them (I hadn't gotten much guidance on the non-scientific parts of the interviews from previous mentors), but $750 k + generous TA support would have been a good ask.

      Delete
    6. PS, I am @4:42pm, and am an organic chemist. Somebody with specialized instrumental needs would probably command a higher start-up.
