My conclusion was they were of no help and your chances of landing job are even remote, if you are a science graduate. People who were of non-scientific background (sales, marketing) were helped. I only wished that my previous employers could have given me that money and let me decide if I needed their help (Lee Hecht)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8964719845369935777.post-17897086402752904752011-08-30T10:00:53.823-04:002011-08-30T10:00:53.823-04:00Maybe they should make posting jobs to C&EN fr...Maybe they should make posting jobs to C&EN free as long as they are chem-related. This seems to me more an exercise in rearranging deck chairs.

Reality is, the ACS has no ability to create jobs or, quite frankly, anything of tangible value (they do publish some nice journals, but it's not like they generate the content). I'm sure they have a nice website that lists open positions, but those positions would equally be filled if they were posted only on Monster.com, or any one of a number of different sites.

I did belong to the ACS years ago when my employer paid for it. They essentially have a job club, and it probably is more effective than hunting on your own. That said, there actually have to be jobs there to help you get - through 2009 when I was in that program, there wasn't a whole host of stuff in chemistry in town.

So, yes, they do help in developing networks, and when you meet people face to face you do want to help them more than otherwise - elevating them up that list of friends first, the colleagues, then.....

The challenges will be 1) getting enough employed people (who can help rather than compete) to participate, and 2) having actual jobs to get help with.

If nothing else though, increasing awareness amongst some members of just how bad it has become can only be a good thing. And much as we rag on the ACS for not doing anything, I do kind of thing they are relatively powerless this time around.@KayakPhiliphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07708959305241645874noreply@blogger.com
