Did you say the right things the right way (regardless of what you actually believe)? Did your famous NAS advisor take the time to groom you on how to "interview well" and say all the correct buzzwords (leverage, activation mode, reactivity manifold etc)? This is all a way of sorting to exclude those who aren't in the club, regardless of research ideas or promise.

The onus should not be on the candidate to mimic this signals, but on the committee 1) recognize this bias and 2) look beyond it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8964719845369935777.post-28199681044748381042019-11-12T10:17:30.208-05:002019-11-12T10:17:30.208-05:00I’d imagine every step, including the call, is imp...I’d imagine every step, including the call, is important or they’d wouldn’t waste their time--they're trying to thin the pool of candidates at every step so the better you perform, the better off you are. I’m in just about the same boat as you. One phone interview and they’re calling me in for an on-site. Nothing else from any other schools and I’ve applied to a ton. You don't have a relationship with the students and you (generally) don't know if they have been doing any sort of active learning already. It's something that would probably look great if you pull it off, but might not be worth the risk. Perhaps other people who have done them this year will have more/better advice thoughAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8964719845369935777.post-61120359654746405112019-11-11T19:32:00.519-05:002019-11-11T19:32:00.519-05:00Oh, true, without a doubt. There are unique aspects of every place that you can leverage, and be honest think about the faculty at most of the non top 10 places of the world, most of them have a cool story about someone they connected really well with on the onsite visit. It's probably the case at most top 10 places too. Ask as much about this as possible - type of room, technology available (if needed), chalk/whiteboard, audience, kind of students (even if it’s mock and you get all kinds of profs there, they’ll have a level in mind: seniors?
