Rather than calling it grim, I would suggest that Furman is just making the type of faculty position clear. It is a teaching position, not a research position. The search committee does not want to waste time with a candidate that will ultimately not accept an offer if one is extended.The fact that they are offering lab space and any startup money for a 2-year visiting position, the fact that it is a 2-year position instead of a 1-year, and the fact that the candidate will be eligible to apply for internal funding once there all make this position somewhat extraordinary.
