Look -- there's a lot to be criticized about modern industrial agriculture and how it does things. But chemophobia and fear, uncertainty and doubt attacks are really annoying.
But what do I know? I'm one of the people who makes money from chemicals.
P.S. Bittman's "Minimalist" recipes are, indeed, pretty great. I like them a lot.
Does anyone else find Bittman's hatred of milk and dairy weird as well? I wasn't aware there was an actual war against the lactose intolerant.
ReplyDeleteI, for one, welcome our new round-up-ready alfalfa overlords.
ReplyDeleteIt's not the GMO foods that are so terrible for you, it's the chemicals they get to use with GMO foods. Not mention the dicy litigation involved in the patenting of genes. I for one am all for the labeling. If nothing else it might encourage some scientific literacy. My mother conflates issues with pesticides/herbicides and GMOs. Many of the chemicals used in the ag business were properly banned, but made legal during the Bush administration, which is now being conflated with the GMO arguments. The consumer can look at the GMO label and perhaps even learn something about GMO food, and in turn our ag business and decide how to make it better.
ReplyDeleteYou're delusional if you think labeling = literacy. What you'll get is fear of the scary GMO. The GMO label won't tell you what's actually inside, it'll just make people think there's something freaky about a food that uses sugar from a GM sugar beet rather than sugar from cane. BUT IT'S CHEMICALLY THE EXACT SAME THING.
ReplyDeleteHow is that different than the way it is now? Give the populace the label, allow them to get educated on the issue, and decide for themselves if they are willing to pay the premium to not have GMO food, just like organic (or what used to be organic). The true free market can sort out the difference. The label on the ballot, is really for California where everything is shown to cause cancer. The people just adjusted their expectations, and those that aren't willing or able to pay for the premium for non"carcinogenic" merchandise deal.
DeleteI never really understood what the big deal is on consumer advocacy.
I wondering how they plan on labeling sunlight....
