From Jim Austin of Science Careers, a terribly interesting graph by Prof. Ed Lazowska of the University of Washington, charting BLS projections from 2012 about job growth in STEM:
Just remember, when people talk about STEM, they're really talking about TE.

I think there's and S&M joke in there somewhere.
ReplyDeleteWhat counts as a "Computer Occupation"? Does working for Geek Squad count?
ReplyDeleteThose S&M folks are getting the shaft.
ReplyDeleteAnd half of them love it.
ReplyDeleteNice Buffy reference.
ReplyDeleteConspiracy Theory: UW Prof gets paid by Microsoft to suggest big growth in demand for "Computer Occupations". Microsoft complains about lack of qualified workers in US and then points to said study to convince US Congress to increase Visas limits for applications to fill the demand. Results in qualified and available US candidates losing out to foreign imports more willing to accept low pay scales (which Microsoft uses to increase their profit margins). Plausible scenario?
ReplyDeleteUnless Microsoft has some means of influencing BLS economists and their models, I don't buy it.

ReplyDeleteJim Austin here, from Science Careers. Not really a conspiracy theory--more necessary due diligence. Lazowska is heavily involved in the industry, so skepticism is warranted. So his arguments--and his statistics--need to be judged on their merits. I reviewed those BLS numbers, and while I don't have a huge amount of confidence in any employment projections--including theirs--they are at least honest.
Hey, is it just me or are some of these capcha's impossible?
Sorry, forgot to mention: I'll be posting a followup to this post later today.
