It seems like everyone in chemistry gets their portion of pain, academic, industrial and government. Sympathies to those affected by the shutdown -- this stinks.
Are you affected? I would like to hear from those who are.

The congress should have taken into consideration the welfare of it's constituents.
ReplyDeleteDon't be ridiculous! There's meaningless posturing that needs to be done!
DeleteI love the fact that there's "topical spam" now.
DeleteMy favorite site for searching military papers/archives, the Combined Arms Research Library (CARL), was down. At that point, the shit got real.
ReplyDeleteThe big "trade-off" of working for the government has always been low wages and little opportunity in exchange for good benefits and reliable employment. The negatives are getting worse thanks to the three-year salary freeze and sequester, and the positives are diminishing due to the political demonization of the federal worker and the biannual battles over the budget and debt ceiling. (I'm now applying for academic jobs, which should tell you something.)
ReplyDeleteFed scientist that flew out to a conference Sunday and had to fly back yesterday. Didn't get to present (supposed to today) but got to take the short course I was registered for and got to have an in face meeting with my collaborator so we could hash out data and papers. So I sort of got something done (I tell myself) even though it seems like the taxpayers money was wasted...
ReplyDeleteMy lab has some carryover funds which will keep us running for at least this week, then at some point we can't show up. I have friends at other national labs who are just on forced vacation. Hopefully I'll get some advance notice to turn things off...
