This brings up a question I have. Are these on-line job search sites useful for Ph.D.s at all?
ReplyDeleteMost of them, no, not really. The vast majority (including the ones I follow regularly) are of limited use. I think some are worth more than others (i.e. I really do think ACS Careers/C&EN Jobs does a good/better job than say, Monster/dot/com.)
DeleteAlso, depends on which category, right? Academic versus industrial, entry-level versus mid-career. I think for your run-of-the-mill PUI assistant prof job, yeah, online is a great resource. Mid-career industrial? Much less so.
Yes, I agree that C&EN jobs is probably a good resource for people looking for new academic jobs. I hardly ever see any industry jobs advertised in C&EN anymore.
DeleteI've just started my job hunt (~6 months from finishing my PhD) and I'm having difficulty getting to the ACS Website actually. Has anyone else noticed this?
DeleteWhich link? (Actually I've noticed issues/errors with the ACS Presentations on Demand site.)
DeleteThis one is working well for me... http://chemistryjobs.acs.org/jobs
DeleteStarbucks used to have an entire coffee science division when I was at Univ. of Washington in grad school. They downsized it during that time.
