Dear Bring the Movies! Recently we commissioned a study which showed that typical elementary school teacher is a stable, fulfilling and fairly compensated job. More importantly, these positions are unionized and poorly amenable to outsourcing. ACS can not, in good conscience, support this sort of employment.
Dear Madeline, opps, I mean Medellin: Thank you for your enlightening response. Does your hubby call you "Million-Dollar-Baby?" for 1.) the salary you receive or 2.) the Big Pharma dollars saved per day to outsource Chemistry, catalyzed by your consulting?
Dear Bring the Movies! You raise an interesting question. Do I have a husband? Or, broadly speaking, a spouse. I don't know - I will have to have my executive assistant to look it up. In any case, be assured that in general people around here address me however I damn well please.
Dear Bring the Movies. You do, of course, realize we have to have *something* up on the C&EN website to keep the serfs from revolting, right? Otherwise I shudder to think what our membership numbers would be like, and then hell, they'll be no more "Million dollar diva" for me. We certainly can't let that happen!
You are a Kulak, Medellin! We will rise, collectivize, and bring the means of publication to the people! And you will starve and perish, you Biologist swine!
I think that the ACS is slowly dropping hints that chemistry graduates need to "broaden their horizons" if they are looking to be gainfully employed. They are also slowly encouraging those with chemistry degrees to.....*pause* ....let me just be frank with all of you....get out of chemistry while you are young and still have a future. If you're thinking about majoring in Chemistry, do not do it unless you intend on going to professional school. Go to a community college and spend your time and money retraining yourself for a brighter career in something else. Chemistry just is a rubbish field and it is not worth it anymore. You can see that by the lack of jobs in this field.
In all honesty and frankness, we need to be saying something to the ACS employees who are letting these sorts of job advertisements through to the ACS job board: just because a company is willing to pay for advertisements for "spam jobs" does not mean that these advertisements are appropriate for ACS members. This is becoming an example of how the ACS is not serving the interests of its members.
looks like Blogger doesn't work with anonymous comments from Chrome browsers at the moment - works in Microsoft Edge, or from Chrome with a Blogger account - sorry! CJ 3/21/20
Dear CJ, do we strike you as people who would leave money on the table?
ReplyDeleteThe ACS is encouraging chemistry graduates to explore "non-traditional jobs"?
DeleteYes. And considering the way the job market has been, I have become an expert on PTSD.
DeleteIm surprised "Elementary School Teacher" has not been placed on that list.

DeleteI do not approve of BtM's ending parenthetical in the 2:49PM comment. Overly personal.
DeleteI do approve of the "means of publication" joke; clever.

ReplyDeleteYes. It speaks volumes about their commitment to employment issues. This job board is a clear indication that they just don't give an eff.
