Between February 6 and February 10, there were 168 positions posted. Of these, 22 (13%) were relevant academic positions and 15 (9%) were irrelevant academic positions.
Pfizer: They're still dumping positions -- 74 positions (44%) in this last time period. Some are very relevant and some are really not.
Oak Ridge, TN: Oak Ridge National Laboratories is looking for a Ph.D. synthetic organic chemist; this looks to be in the Chemical Separations group. Fascinating, especially the desired background: supramolecular chemistry, coordination chemistry, self-assembly, and/or separations chemistry. Best wishes to someone.
Huntsville, AL: Nektar is looking for a Senior Scientist II -- looks to be a Ph.D. analytical chemist, with significant experience.
Decatur, AL: Also in the "Yellowhammer State", Hexcel Corporation is looking for a M.S./Ph.D. chemist.
Boston, MA: A law firm looking for young Ph.D. chemists to be technology specialists for intellectual property work.
The Irrelevants List: Are you a Ph.D. chemist? Wanna be a fixed-income investment analyst in Baltimore? No? How about a oncologist in South Carolina?

Any feel for Pfizer's motive on the position dumping? Are phishing for updated salary expectations in preparation of massive layoffs? Do they need to replenish their empty labs with scientists? Or all of the above?
ReplyDeleteI've no idea. I know they are hiring more than they have been in the last year or so, but I don't know why lots of Pfizer positions are getting posted in C&EN Jobs. It's kinda frustrating, in the sense that some of the positions are really, really, really relevant and some of them are really not.
Deletetl;dr I have no idea.
Can you please explain what position dumping is?
ReplyDeleteI think he/she means advertising positions that don't really exist to see what's out there or get an idea of salary expectations. Merck is rumored to engage in this.
DeleteWhen they're emptying out their careers page and posting all the open positions onto C&EN Jobs willy nilly. Merck used to do this 2-3 years ago.
DeleteMillenium was the one, during the 2008-2009 years, who was consistently posting claims of open jobs (and paying for it with ad space in C&EN) and rumored to be using people's salary requests/histories in order to set internal numbers.
Thanks. I find this a despicable practice. They need to dump all the HR and higher managers in the *+&"can.
