A few of the jobs posted on C&EN Jobs in the last week:
Princeton, NJ: This "senior research scientist" position at BMS is interesting, in that it seems aimed at a B.S./M.S. chemist that's spent 10-15 years at the bench. Anyone know what it is about?
Shanghai, China: This position with the USP is pretty interesting:
Augusta, GA: KaMin is a kaolin clay manufacturer -- they're looking for a lab tech. They're offering $19.90 - 25.76, which is pretty good, I'm guessing. (Are they really going to pay that?)
East Syracuse, NY: This "product marketing chemist" for a GC instrumentation company is interesting; claiming 25-30% travel time. Considering your clients are in petrochemicals, I'm guessing it's more like 50% or higher.
A broader look: Monster, Careerbuilder, Indeed and USAjobs.gov show (respectively) 187, 1033, 2742 and 18 positions for the search term "chemist." LinkedIn shows 546 positions for the job title "chemist", with 27 for "research chemist", 78 for "analytical chemist", 2 for "medicinal chemist", 5 for "synthetic chemist" and 5 for "organic chemist."

is "250-325k" in US$ or RMB?
ReplyDeleteUS$ not bad for PRC, RMB.....less so....
Currently, if it's in RMB, it runs about 42K-54K in USD. Cost of living differs a lot, but Shanghai's pretty expensive, so I have no idea what it means. Are there exchange issues with RMB?
ReplyDeletemaybe instead of lobbying for visas for big ego / low quality PhD who steal company secrets for the Chinese government, companies are deciding to hire experienced BS/MS citizens who were laid off
ReplyDeleteDon't get your hopes up, guys. Under "roles and responsibilities", I read "Must be fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese". Anyone feel up to it?
ReplyDeleteAm Chinese. Pretty sure it is in USD. Shanghai is pretty expensive. 250-325k RMB is for people with MS + 5yr experience, pretty mediocre.
ReplyDeleteI heard it is quite common for Chinese companies to lure Chinese-Americans with very nice offers, especially for PIs tasked with builng up new research groups, to go back to mainland China, but after few years (when you have settled and the kids are in school, etc.) they find a reason to bring down the salary, in hopes you would put up with it (and in the meanwhile, they got out of you most of your expertise in the last few years
