The experiment is one week old! Doing my best to track down all open research-track medicinal chemistry positions. At the moment, I've found around 47 positions.
Positions I'm not including: positions outside the United States (this will likely change), process or computational positions (this will likely change as well), academic positions (will likely be included about a year from now?)
Want to help out? Here's a Google Form to enter positions, but if you want to do the traditional "leave a link in the comments" that works, too.
This is awesome ! I like the way you organize this GoogleDoc.
ReplyDeleteIf you need help in Europe, I can spread this google form to my contacts. ;)
Once again, ChemJobber proved to be source of wonderful initiatives !
Thanks !
You're our chemistry superhero in these dark times.
ReplyDeleteDear Chemjobber or fellow followers,
ReplyDeleteIs there any chance, in general, to get a med-chem job as being a non-US resident foreigner with a PhD / Postdoc in organic synthesis at European institutions? To be clear, without having a residence permit, green card.
Thanks.
Even though I am from other side of the world, I keep following your blog more than 7 years. You are really one of a kind in several languages that I can follow information flow in chemistry. Congrats!!!
Having just been laid off last week, thank you thank you thank you
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome. Please let me know how I can help: chemjobber@gmail.com

There are a number of NMR-relevant postings that I've seen in recent pharma-related searches.

Anon5:21 PM: if you'd like, send me a 50-100 word "situation wanted" and I'd be happy to run it.
DeleteI am at a crossroads in my life and about to be laid off at 60. I would like to keep going and it would really help me financially. But I get the feeling that there is just nothing out there for a Ph.D. organic chemist to do at this age. I know this is an increasingly common situation and wonder what others in similar straits have done in their post-layoff existence.
DeleteLet me put up a post and see what others say.
DeleteAlso, here are some posts about what laid-off chemists (mostly not in middle-age) have done: https://chemjobber.blogspot.com/search/label/the%20layoff%20project
DeleteYour post is here: http://chemjobber.blogspot.com/2016/12/help-for-senior-medicinal-chemist.html
DeleteAs a PhD candidate soon to graduate, should I apply for non-phd roles? Theres quite a few jobs that require MS with 0-2 years experience, and in some cases academic experience is OK, but no PhD listed.
ReplyDeleteIf you have a Ph.D. (or soon to have one) you apply for Ph.D. jobs.
DeleteHey CJ, do you think would it be useful to have a process chem list as well?
ReplyDeleteShort answer: yes. Longer answer: that's to come, probably around the early part of January.
DeleteIs there any actual movement in these positions? I'm sure they're all getting applicants, but has anybody heard back from any of these companies? I'd be willing to bet Merck, Novartis, and Gilead haven't really sent anything beyond the generic "We've received your resume, don't call us we'll call you." But there are some smaller outfits on there that should be more responsive. Any positive news is good.
ReplyDeleteAbbvie and Vertex have definitely interviewed people on-site within the last month or so
DeleteI've gotten a few replies from Merck and Novartis after applying for positions in early January, so they're looking for sure, albeit responses are slow
DeleteVery few people realize that these companies put up ads for jobs that don't exist, it's called branding. Keep sending them all your personal info on a resume. HR staff are degenerates, they think nothing of calling around, asking about you, slandering you, it's power tripping.
DeleteI know people with onsites at Merck and Novartis in the next month.
DeleteI have always wonder, when a company is looking for a PhD level let's say with 5 years of experience. Does a PhD/ post doc count as an experience ? Thanks for your answer
ReplyDeleteIt depends on the position and the company, but probably not.
DeleteI'd be surprised if any company would count your Ph.D./post-doc as experience in this context. Otherwise, would would an entry level Ph.D. job be? Wouldn't everyone have 5 years experience (or more depending on length of your Ph.D.). 5 years experience means years past scholarly activity.
DeleteQuestion about the list: It's probably impossible to determine this, but how many of these jobs are actually still "open"? It's nice to say the job list is 90+, but it's probably much less than that.
What I have noticed is that positions get reposted (you can tell by the job code, for the larger organizations.) I don't know if it's a fishing expedition or what, but the position is there. Merck, in particular, will close positions if they get enough applicants.
DeleteI don't think the real number is 90+ either, but the statistical/date collection point of this is to provide a ceiling (e.g. there are no more than this many positions) rather than a floor.
uh, that's "statistical/data"
DeleteHey Chemjobber, in your most recent Med. Chem. positions post, the links to post comments is dead. Just FYI.
ReplyDeleteWhoops! Fixed, thanks.
