DeleteWhat does "scheduling phone or video interview" really mean. This is my understanding; all qualified applicants have been contacted already with date and time confirmed or being confirmed. Also, when you applied to a school and the school is scheduling interviews since 10/4 but you've not being contacted, can one rule out his/her chances of getting an interview with such schools. Assistance greatly appreciated.
Delete^ Might be that they have just begun that process. In my case at least I was contacted by a school about a week after they had begun scheduling phone interviews according to this thread. May be an anomaly, but don't give up hope!
DeleteAnon 10:57 AM - you have to understand where the information is coming from. It's not from search committee members (genreally), but from candidates. All they know is that they have been contacted for an interview. Perhaps they were the last of 15, or perhaps they are the first of 5. Perhaps the school is contacting people all at once, or over the course of a week. Perhaps all confirmed, perhaps not. No way for the candidate to know.
DeleteSo, if you see that message for a school you applied to, it doesn't mean everyone has been contacted. However, If it's been a week since the message was posted, and you haven't heard anything - you probably won't.
For what it's worth, I received a phone interview request a full week after someone posted here that they had gotten one. I don't know how standard that is.
DeleteRejection email received from the University of Oregon (Knight Campus).
DeleteAnon 11:03a - I haven't received any email from the UO yet. I submitted a little later than the priority date (09/15 over 09/05), so mine has never been reviewed maybe?
DeleteIs it common for rejection emails to be sent? Or is it more likely that if we don't hear back about a phone/Skype interview within a week or two of hearing about others getting called, then we shouldn't expect to hear back anything else?
DeleteTo anon 12:04 PM - it's really all over the place. Some places send rejections soon after the deadline, some wait until after they conduct phone or site interviews, some after they extend an offer, some after you've already heard about the new hire, and some never do. This is from my experience last year. It's sad that so many search committees really don't bother extending these trivial, but meaningful, courtesies.
DeleteI have a temptation to create a list of schools that do not offer a rejection notice within a certain reasonable period of time. I'm not sure how that process should work, but the thought has occurred to me over a number of years.
DeleteAn e-mail 3 months after the priority date seems more than reasonable, but honestly, I've never sat on a search committee so I don't know what is a reasonable time frame.
Washington and Lee is sending rejection emails
DeleteBryn Mawr is scheduling Skype interviews
DeleteWhat about after doing a phone/skype interview? What is a typical time frame to hear back by? At this stage will most schools typically send a rejection? Or do many still not send anything or not until a hire is made?
DeleteHope College is sending rejection emails.
DeleteI have schools where I got an on-campus interview and never heard back one way or the other. After a year, I'm assuming it was a rejection.
DeleteAbout half of the schools I had a phone interview with never sent rejection notices, and well over half of the places I didn't get a phone interview never got back in touch one way or the other.
I think at the very least an automated email that goes out in May or June announcing that either the position has been filled or not is not too much to expect.
Amherst college is sending out rejection letters
DeleteMississippi State is scheduling Skype interviews
DeleteHamilton College is scheduling video interviews.
DeleteVMI is scheduling Skype interviews.
Delete@Anon 4:41 PM - I actually had a similar experience with an on-site, but not in the US. My phone interviews got back to me, but it's not a large sample. Multiple places had systems that clearly said "position filled" in May or so, but never even sent an automated email.
Delete@CJ - I'd be happy to share with you my experience regarding rejection letters from the 2017 cycle (I applied to a fair few, and have all those emails saved, so I know the dates). Since it's a negative claim, you'd probably want at least two reports before you list a department, since one could just be a mistake, or the email got eaten by an internet shark on the way. It looks like most interviews took place in Dec and Jan, meaning they got scheduled in Nov to early Dec, which is less than two months from the priority dates. At that point, I think it's only fair to email people who were not invited, rather than have them (i.e., us) anxiously check the seminar schedules on department websites to see suspicious looking talks from postdocs...
Has anyone outright emailed the search committee chair or the listed email address in the job advertisement to ask about the status of their application?...perhaps a month or two after not hearing back? Is this recommended?
Delete@ Anon 4:42 pm. I emailed the search chair and he responded to my email. I think its okay to email to ask about the status of your application.

DeleteAny thought about the University of Colorado Boulder reposting the position on Functional Materials and Complex Matter?
Delete@Anon 10:47 AM - I wouldn't read anything into it. Those job boards can have various unpredictable bugs and weird settings, and this doesn't actually mean that anyone at the university reposted anything. Sometimes there's strange interaction between the job board and the university's HR system, that causes a job to get "reposted" when the status changes on the university's HR system (from open to expired, for instance).

DeleteI guess the lively discussions that use to take in this chat are gone. This is unfortunate.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I am a little concerned about this.
DeleteI dunno - after three years of this nonsense I think I'm happy to just suffer in silence and contemplate the $$ to be made when I inevitably run out of postdoc funding and bail out to consulting/Wall Street.
Deleteyeah. learned helplessness for sure. also @anon: bailing out into consulting and wall street often requires a very serious effort and isnt a whole lot easier. consider joining your campus consulting club soon.
DeleteCivility please.
DeleteSo - what's with all these places that have had a failed search two years in a row? Poor leadership, unrealistic ambitions, or both?
ReplyDeleteSome places likely have certain types of people in mind and those folks might have gone elsewhere...
DeleteHere my personal two cents (USD) opinion, please forgive my ESL bad habits.
DeleteThe on site interview is important. Outside how good will you be as defending your ideas and how excellent salesman (bringing grant money, publications and fame to the department) you are, faculty want to know who you are.
For example, is the work culture in the department fits you naturally or not?, will you fight everyone (including to a various extend students and staff) and everything?, will you naturally agree with the overall objectives and directions taken by the department, the school, ect...? Will you be able to bring new ideas, fresh energy, complete successfully new and ambitious projects without stepping on the toes of everyone else (including to a various extend students and staff)?, will you listen to your senior prof, the senior staffs ? Overall, you are hired to solve problems, will you be part of the solution or the problems ? You don't want to hire someone that will fail the tenure track unless you and the department have tones of time and money to waste. Finally, will you be happy in the town/city where you are applying? All these and more are sometimes difficult to assess from a phone/Skype interview which may lead to disappointing results during the on-site interviews on both sides.
Furthermore, if you are a competitive candidate, you are probably the first to third choice of many schools. This is a problem for middle size to smaller schools where in many case incentives are not great. In smaller school, there is not much room for negotiation on benefit and wages. They may have to go to their fourth or even lower down their ranking list. It is expensive to bring a candidate for an on-site interview and the search committee, the Dean or higher up may call the day at some point.
At least on the PUI front, a lot of the failed and repeated searches were mid-season (campus interviews in late Nov/Dec). That's an awkward position, as it's also when offers are going out for early season jobs. It can make it easy to have either a large portion of your short-list or even some of your on-campus picks back out with another offer, and not a lot of time to schedule new interviews before the holidays.
DeleteDo PUIs tend to announce their open faculty positions later than research universities? I'm applying to PUIs only within a fairly small region and there haven't been as many openings to apply to as I was hoping. I wonder if there are likely to be more position annoucements to come.
ReplyDeleteBroadly speaking, yes, but think of it this way. My prediction is that there will be around 220 more positions to come over the next 7 months - I also predict that, of those 220 positions, ~60-70% of them will be PUIs. What percentage will be in any particular region?
DeleteMy guess is these would be for visiting positions, as it will be pretty late for TT searches?
DeleteNo. TT positions. I was adding into February last year, although not very many.
DeleteOK, this is the breakout for 2017-18:
DeleteOctober: 18.7% of overall positions
November: 8.5%
December: 6.3%
2018: 12.9%
i.e. 12.9% of last year's total (552) were posted after January 1, 2018.
DeleteThanks for this. always curious how much is left in the tank etc.
DeleteI'm the original poster. Thanks for the comments! Hopefully I will find more positions to apply for over the next few months!
DeleteI hope the discussions get going once we hit more deadlines. Seemed like there was a lot more chatter around the time of interviews and such in past years.
ReplyDeleteAll right folks, it's time to weigh in: Someone has asked me to post a tenure-track position for NIH/NCI on the list. Do you want me to post it?
ReplyDeleteMy problem with this: if I post this one, I feel like I will have to start posting all other government institute positions that offer tenure.
Your thoughts?
punt to next year (or suggest they start their own list that you can link to)
DeleteMy understanding is that such positions (NIH, national labs) are much more similar to industry jobs, rather than academia. You don't teach, you don't have graduate students, your research is more closely directed. While there are postdocs in NIH and labs, there are also industry postdocs.
DeleteI don't think tenure is really the defining characteristic for people looking for jobs - I know I don't start by thinking "I want tenure", then search for jobs with it.
Post more foreign positions!
DeleteNever going to happen on the list, sorry.

FIT does not offer tenure.
DeleteThat's the new trend, no tenure at regional institutions.
DeleteDoes anyone else find it strange that some of these faculty job application portals do not allow (or have no option for) applicants to keep track of the submission status of reference letters? Perhaps, this is part of the new procedure to disqualify applicants early on without references (?). I have to literally check with my references (some of which are from different countries) to see if they have received a notification from certain institutions or email their HR personnel so that the application procedure seems unnecessarily longer...
ReplyDeleteI assume each school is different but I've heard from many faculty members that the timeliness of the letter submission isn't super important. So perhaps as long as you supply the contact info for the references, if for some reason the letters weren't uploaded the committee can contact them? Some schools don't even send out an email for letters until they get a short list. I would be surprised if applicants were disqualified because all of the letters weren't in by the deadline.
DeleteI find it strange and infuriating. I also hate it when schools have their own, very different systems. I wish all schools would just use academic job online or interfolio, as I'm sick of filling out the same details over and over. I can finish a submission in minutes on those, vs. sometimes half an hour to an hour fiddling with systems with special instructions (real example - NOT UPLOAD DOCUMENTS TO THE FIELD THAT SAYS "UPLOAD DOCUMENTS HERE"; LOG OUT THEN LOG BACK IN AND GO TO...).
DeleteSome schools say they won't even look at an "incomplete" application, and that includes letters. Most places, I think, will review applications even without all the letters, but it's hard to tell.
In my experience so far (this includes last year), most chemistry deapartments ask for letters right away, whereas engineering (chemical, materials) departments wait for the short-list phase.
So then is the only way for me to handle this application process is to keep bugging my references or the HR personnel? *sigh*
DeleteI agree with Anon @11:45AM. Filling out mundane details over and over is such a waste of time. I also experienced the same "LOG OUT THEN LOG BACK IN TO FINISH SUBMISSION". Seriously? It's 2018.
DeleteTo get back to the original question- I have a spreadsheet that I have my letter writers check off whenever a letter gets submitted, just so I can kind of keep track of things...
Emails are being sent out from the University of Victoria as follows:
ReplyDelete"the deadline for the University of Victoria's Canada Research Chair Tier 2 in "Advanced Functional Materials" position has been extended to October 31st." and that applications that have been submitted can be edited up to that deadline
University of California, Merced has also sent out an email to extend the application deadline for the "Open Rank Faculty Position in Synthetic Chemistry":
Delete"Please note that the original application deadline of October 1st, 2018 has been extended to October 15, 2018. Therefore, you have until this new deadline to submit updated application materials, or if not already submitted, to submit your completed application. Also, it is highly advised that you ensure your letters of reference are also received by the deadline."
I'm a noob. Is this a normal thing to happen?
DeleteI can't speak for every institution, but we have extended deadlines for a number of reasons. Often, the original deadline is somewhat arbitrary and might be extended as a courtesy to applicants. If the committee won't take action until November, why close the search? Depending on the institutional policy, a review of application materials may not even be permitted until a certain number of applications from underrepresented candidates are received. I remember being told the following by the department chair (who was told by the dean): " If you're serious about hiring diverse candidates, your finalist pool should consist only of diverse candidates". This isn't exactly the sort of thing that gets advertised openly, but it can (and does) influence deadline extensions.
DeleteBe cautious about thinking it's a hard "deadline" when the ad says something to the effect of "evaluations will begin on MM/DD" or "priority date of MM/DD". Most "deadlines" are not actual deadlines and a search likely doesn't "close" until an offer is accepted.
DeleteSimilarly, don't assume that because there's a deadline, you can skate in right before it. Some SCs will review apps as they come in and already have finalists in mind by the deadline.
DeleteI've known places that meet the day after and finalize a list- if your application came in right at the end, it may or may not get full consideration.
FYI for Boston U.: E-mail from this morning: "Thank you for your application to Boston University for the position of Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Department. I regret to say that the university-level administration has withdrawn their support for this position, and we are not continuing with the search process this year."
ReplyDeleteAlso received. Position gone on AJO
DeleteWould anyone care to share the average or total number of institutions that they have applied to in the past or in this cycle? This is my first time on the chemistry faculty job market and as the number of advertisements has grown, so has my list...my criteria for which institution to send in an application has also changed...
ReplyDeleteI applied to 44. Also first time on market. A few of these positions are in engineering rather than chemistry.

I’d be interested in seeing this data split for people focused primarily on R1 versus people focused primarily on PUIs. My guess is that R1 applicants are likely to apply more broadly, and PUI applicants might have more specific criteria in their searches.
DeleteI went the PUI route. I applied to 20 my first year and got a VAP, then around 45 each of the next two years. I was applying relatively selectively.
DeleteRegrettably, we don't have that data broken out by R1/R2 versus PUI. That's something I will add to the 2018-2019 survey.
Delete2017-2018: I applied (only for TT-Assist Prof) to 8 R1, 9 "comprehensive" universities, 26 PUIs.
Delete2017-2018: "practice year" - figured if I got a really great offer I could take it, but I still had the next year covered by my fellowship so I had some flexibility. Applied to 6 PUIs.
DeleteThis year: 28 applications so far, 23 PUI and 5 MS.
2016 I applied to two. Now I’m applying to 19 to get out of that one that I got.
Delete45
ReplyDeleteIs the Cornell College biochemistry position no longer open?
ReplyDeleteY'all this is such an awful process.
ReplyDeleteWhat stress!
DeleteI am sorry that the application process has been stressful. Here is the mentality that I have started adopting: we have worked hard in our scientific endeavors and we are now simply sharing our work with others to find an institution that best fits us. Attaining a faculty position is really not the "end goal." Take each step as an opportunity to share ourselves and our work with others. A rejection (or lack of response) from a particular institution does not have to be taken personally and might actually be better for us in the long run, especially if the institution is not a good fit to begin with. Try not to see ourselves as "items to be bought" by an institution. We have all accomplished a lot, already, to get to this application stage and should commend ourselves for it. Best of luck to all!
ReplyDeleteWhile this is certainly a valid worldview, it doesn't reflect the reality of the situation for many of us. We don't all have luxury of finding the perfect place to share our science - many of us simply need to put food on the table. We'd like to get out of soft-money positions. We'd like to know where we in the world we are physically going to live more than 1 or 2 years into the future...
DeleteAnon @10:30 AM: Great attitude! I think this is a good mentality to have.
DeleteFrom my experience, to state the obvious: Following a job interview, Anon 10:39's attitude, if not perceive arrogant or entitled, will likely yield positive results. However, Anon 11:22 attitude, event if understandable (I do empathize with your situation) and not explicitly express during a job interview, may lead to disappointing results.
DeleteInitial "anonymous poster" here. Thanks for the different viewpoints. I realize that and can personally relate to how the uncertainty of being on soft-money or annual contracts is stressful. The application process might not help any. What I think would help is to understand that, ultimately, both the search committee members and we applicants strive for a "best fit" (not perfect, just good enough based on the small data set that we have with some luck involved). When I lose that mentality in hopes of just finding "anything, any faculty position", I also find myself forgetting the value of my academic training and instead focusing on selling myself or satisfying a set of criteria. I don't think this is the intention of a faculty search. Good academic research and training are not easy, and I need to be confident that my training is substantial. It is important to understand ourselves and our worth, and to stand firm in the achievements that have gotten us to where we are. If we applicants lose this perspective, then how will the departments to which we apply see us? If we are no longer searching for a "best fit" for ourselves and our futures, then what are we even doing? Even if we get a faculty position, there is still uncertainty in our career prospects, albeit perhaps less than a postdoctoral or similar position: We may learn that the professorship is not what it seems to be; we might not get tenure; life happenings may require us to relocate and apply to a different position. Do not let a career goal to attain a professorship be the "end goal". I might not know where I will be next year, but I am certain that the skills I have developed are desirable and that if I choose to, I can find a nonacademic job that can support my family. I choose the lifestyle of uncertainty, at least for now, because I am chasing a goal that feels worth it. I try to do what makes me feel "worth it" now and remind myself that I have options. When I do not see options, I have not searched broadly enough.
DeleteDidn't get the interview from UMass Lowell. Feel bad.
ReplyDeleteI understand. Didn't get one from School of Mines. Hang in there buddy. Hopefully you hear from somewhere soon!
DeleteDid School of Mines contact you or are you just assuming from not hearing back?
DeleteI didn't get Mines or NYU. RIP.
Delete@3:28: Did either school explicitly notify you or are you basing this on not being contacted?
Delete@3:35 I'm just assuming based on not hearing anything.
DeleteI'm anonymous 1:20. I'm assuming from not hearing back.
DeleteI did a Zoom interview with the Mines last week. SC said there would be 5 questions, and I ended up with being asked more intense questions than 5. Is that a good sign or nothing? I haven't heard anything after that. I could have answered better if I was more relaxed but felt a little nervous due to a small technical issue.
Delete@4:18 any idea how many they Skype interviewed?
Delete@5:20p I think a candidate pool is larger than other places considering the fact that the interview was 15 min whereas other places are usually 30 min. My guess is a little over 10.
DeleteThank you!@1:20 PM Only around 10 openings fit me well. Hopefully, I could hear something from other universities.
DeleteI hope so @6:41. This process is super depressing/stressful/etc. Many feelings are being felt :D. Hopefully you do hear something from other universities. Stay positive!
DeleteMcKendree University is scheduling phone interview.
ReplyDeleteIs it typical for search committee to contact and schedules on-site interviews with all candidates at once? When you did Skype/phone interviews with a school and later see that school is scheduling on-site interviews here, then can one rule out his/her chances of getting an interview with such schools?
ReplyDeleteThat happens but very rare. I advise you to just move on.
DeleteCould happen months from now if original search falls through. Those cases are also rare but do happen...
DeleteSomewhat related question: What do you all think is the typical length of time after a phone/skype interview and a request for an on-site? I had a phone interview about a week ago, but have heard nothing back. Does it seem unlikely to hear back after this amount of time?
DeleteIt could be several weeks. I waited almost a month to hear last year after a phone interview - although some of that time was over the holidays. They later told me they had to wait for administrative approval of the candidates to schedule the onsite interviews.
DeleteOne of my letter writers just forwarded me a posting for a school...that I had not only applied to over a month ago...but resent a letter requests from...several times. Send help.
ReplyDeleteI would recommend to tactfully respond to your reference and let them know (1) you appreciate that they thought to send you the job posting, (2) you think the position would be a good fit for you and (3) you would like their endorsement in the form of a letter, to be sent as soon as possible. Include clear instructions for how to submit the letter and be graceful. People all lead very busy lives; try not to take it personally.
DeleteThank you. I did just this after receiving the email but couldn't help laugh at the situation. At least 2/3rds of my letter writers have submitted now...just gotta get my old PI to pony up.

ReplyDeleteEmmanuel College is scheduling phone interviews.
ReplyDeleteHow long does an R1 school usually take to schedule interviews? (I realize this may vary... a month or so?)
ReplyDeleteDo you mean after the first contact via phone/skype or after the priority date?
DeletePriority date.
ReplyDeleteThe R1 universities do seem a tad slower this year based on the activity on this forum. Last year around the same time, there were quite a few R1s already scheduling on-site interviews.
DeleteFor Hope College:
ReplyDeleteOctober 16: solicitation for a one-page fit to their mission statement
October 19: request for Skype interview over the weekend of Oct 20-21
Last year, I had two first contacts over a month after priority date when I already assumed to hear nothing.
ReplyDeleteBut I already have a TT position, not sure if this matters.
Several years ago when I interviewed for TT first, things seemed to be faster.
Is there anyone get response from brigham young university?
ReplyDeleteHaven't heard yet from any of the schools I've submitted to, many of which have sent out responses to others. Should I submit an abstract to the Spring ACS meeting? Wasn't planning on going, and am wondering if it would be worth it.
ReplyDeleteIf financing your trip to the ACS meeting is not a problem and you have time, it certainly would not hurt to do so. Perhaps, use the meeting as an opportunity to speak with departments that you are interested in joining, and inquire about their hiring plans in the upcoming years.
