ReplyDeleteUIC has scheduled on-sites
ReplyDelete@Anon 2:32 Which field? inorganic, chem bio, or them ed?
DeleteNot OP but have applied to all the chem ed positions have not yet heard from any. Hope they're busy grading midterms despite that one prof said they would try to wrap it all up before the holidays.
Deleteinorganic, not sure about the others. I would guess since the other searches closed on 10/31 that those decisions haven't been made yet
ReplyDeleteUniversity of Washington and UC Merced have started contacting people about onsite interviews. UNC Chapel Hill (open position) has scheduled skype interviews.
ReplyDeleteAre UW and UNC interviewing organic chemists?
DeleteI don't know for sure--I'm inorganic.
DeleteUNC Chapel Hill is having Skype interviews for the polymer chemistry position too.
DeleteUniversity of Alabama (inorganic) and Arizona State are setting up skype/zoom interviews. Baylor (inorganic) called for what seemed like an impromptu phone interview; said they would be making decisions about who to invite on-site early next week.
ReplyDeleteASU interviews are for candidates who applied to the School of Molecular Sciences? Their deadline was only a week ago...
DeleteYes. All I know is that they contacted at least one person about setting up a skype interview for tomorrow, so take that for what it is. It is possible they are doing it on a rolling basis.
DeleteAny follow up from Skype or phone of these schools?
DeleteI still haven't heard anything, so clearly I overestimated my ideas/qualifications. :)
ReplyDeleteOr you didn't supplicate yourself sufficiently to satisfy the powers that be:
Deletehttps://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/academia-is-a-cult/2018/10/31/eea787a0-bd08-11e8-b7d2-0773aa1e33da_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.e2b4ded2c0e0
Me too. I am really freaking out since all my targets have at least contacted someone here but I haven't heard from anything yet. Probably it's a good time for me to start looking for some other options.
Deletei try not to get super dejected until after thanksgiving. in my imagination a lot of search committees review apps over the thxgvng break. i'm planning to start moving to plans B/C/D in mid december.
DeleteWhat are plans B/C/D (if you don't mind me asking)? I'm just worried I'm going to be too burnt out after all of this to do anything worthwhile.
Delete@6:05. I'm the original anon. I did actually get contacted for an interview last week after posting this, so I at least have one interview now. If it doesn't work out though, I still have funding for another year of my postdoc, so I might try again next Fall one last time. If that doesn't work, I'll just head into industry.
DeleteHow often do you check your email to look for a response from a school or this chemjobber thread for information that someone *else* heard from one of your targets?
ReplyDeleteTrying to gauge my level of obsessiveness:
I’m at 6-10 times/hour...
I finally started blocking this site because I was creeping up on at least once an hour.
DeleteThis bums me out, even as I understand it.
DeleteI'm at about 10 times daily.
DeleteI'm Anonymous 11:25. It's not you CJ. It just becomes obsession. I just have to block this specific forum/post. I still read the rest of your site obsessively :)
DeleteI check like every hour. In most cases, it's bad news, but better to have an idea of where you realistically stand than having unrealistic hope. I'm glad this exists.
DeleteEckerd is scheduling phone interviews
ReplyDeleteSaint Anselm is scheduling Skype interviews
ReplyDeleteTrinity Washington is scheduling phone interviews
ReplyDeleteUCCS is sending rejections for the phys org/theoretical/computational position.
ReplyDeleteJudging by their seminar schedule, looks like Texas A&M scheduled on-site interviews
ReplyDeleteRochester Organic looks to have scheduled interviews (only interviewing alums, it seems)
ReplyDeleteIMHO, that is ridiculous.
DeleteThey'll end up like the Habsburgs
DeleteHow does one figure that out? I need to work on my sleuthing.
DeleteThey have to be interviewing more than two people... right?
DeleteIf this is true, it is ludicrous. But I am skeptical that this is happening, and even if it is, that it would be possible to find this out while the search is going on. Search committees are notoriously tight lipped during the search process, particularly about something that might get them sued. The anon may not be able to give their evidence, but if it's something like 1 or even 2 or the interviewees being alumni, I wouldn't put too much stock into it.
DeleteI am much more worried about the opposite--getting dinged for being a graduate. When I applied to my undergrad alma mater's visiting position last spring, I was warned by a faculty member (not involved with the search in any way) that the high-up's at the school were starting to push for avoiding alumni as professors. It didn't matter for the visiting position because I applied too late in the process to really be considered, but I worry it's hurting me this fall. About 5 weeks post priority date and I've heard nothing (while another position in the department with the same priority data was scheduling in-person interviews quite some time ago). And in my mind, I am an exquisitely qualified candidate (may already have more publications than anyone in the department), but I suppose everyone thinks that they are highly qualified...
Nov 7 @ 5:29 PM: Are you applying to PUIs or R1s? I'm only applying to PUIs, and it seems to me like it doesn't hurt to be an alum. Just about every school I've interviewed with has one alum in the department, and it has ranged from people who have now been there 20 years to people who were hired in the last 1-2 years.
DeleteI am the Anon from 11/7 at 5:29...
DeleteI am applying to PUIs.
You are correct that many PUI departments have a graduate or two on staff. In fact, everywhere I applied to had one (one place had two), with the exception of my own alma mater, which did not. There are plenty of alumni teaching there, just not in the chemistry department, and what I gathered was that it was a growing trend that the high ups were starting to frown upon.
Every case is certainly unique and should be treated as such. I just have a hard time believing that a department would limit their search to only alumni, it makes no sense statistically because you may be cutting out 95-99% of your applicants. Makes a lot more sense to do the opposite and only cut 1-5% of your applicants. Also, even if one did limit the search, they would never make that known, even if only for the bad press.
But another way to consider it is, how many alumni would a department be willing to tolerate? Many of them have at least one, but would they be content with two, three? At steady state, I doubt that being a graduate helps that many people.
Full disclosure, I'm probably jaded by how rough this process has been on me this fall. I am desperate to get out of industry, where I make probably 2-5x more than most of the people on this forum looking for a job. Just can't take the blatantly illegal actions by management (think Theranos or Clovis Oncology), where one is punished if they don't go along with it.
St. Edwards University is conducting phone interviews this week.
ReplyDeleteVirginia Tech is scheduling on-campus interviews for the polymer chemistry position.
ReplyDeleteToo many VCU jobs. Which one?
DeleteIt's not VCU. It's Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
DeleteThanks. I did not apply that. Sigh...
DeleteHow long after a phone/Skype/Zoom interview should we expect to wait to hear back about whether or not we have made it to the next stage of the interview? No contact for a rejection seems to be the norm...but for how long...before the no contact can and should be considered a rejection?
ReplyDeleteI was told 1-2 weeks by one school after a phone interview, which seems a little long, but who I am to argue?
DeleteI was told by the end of the week yesterday and in 1-2 months today.
DeleteBy 2 different universities
DeleteDepends on school. One had interviews on Tuesday and they said that we should know by Friday. Another sent out rejections after a week. A non-chem dept that I applied to at MIT took 6 months...
DeleteAnybody with information about Towson University's on-site interview. Its almost a month after the phone interviews.
ReplyDeleteI interviewed too, and also haven't heard anything
DeleteTowson University has scheduled on-site interviews.
DeleteTowson’s on-site interviews are mid to end of November.
DeleteI'm guessing potential on-site candidates should be contacted by now if the mid to end of November timeline holds.
DeleteTcnj is scheduling on campus interviews.
ReplyDeletegot a rejection letter from TCNJ today (11/8)
DeleteI've heard that Queens is doing Skype Interviews, but has anyone else heard from any of the Canadian Schools?
ReplyDeleteWhich of the three Queens positions?
DeletePhys Org
DeleteLooks like they have started interviews for Chem Ed also. Has anyone who was invited for a Skype interview for the Phys Org position heard back yet?
Deletehttps://www.chem.queensu.ca/departmental-seminar-series#Nov%202018
Queens has scheduled on-site interviews for chem ed, the videoconference interviews happened at beginning of November. They seemed to have quick turn-around time.
DeleteOn-sites for Queen's phys org have been scheduled
DeleteBioseparations? Seriously? What kind of ridiculous limitation to inflict on potential candidates. The higher ups at UC need to get the chemistry faculty in line.
ReplyDeleteP&G HQ is basically next door. It's not surprising that they are looking for bioseparations experts.
DeleteThe College of New Jersey and Loyola University of New Orleans are sending rejection emails.
ReplyDeleteHaven't heard anything yet from Loyola NO.
DeleteSo, you might still be in the shortlist for Loyola NO, they requested my letters about a month ago, saying that I had passed the first screening. Then, yesterday they sent the rejection email.
Delete2:23p here. I did not request letters from me at least. I do not know if they asked my references without notifying me. Maybe I am excluded from the long list in the first place.
DeleteHas anybody heard anything from Lafayette College, in Easton, PA?
ReplyDeleteNot me...
DeleteI received an email in late September that said they were in the process of narrowing their list of applicants and I was being considered further, but no contact since then.
DeleteI was emailed requesting my graduate transcripts shortly after the application deadline, but I have not heard anything since.
DeleteI really wonder what's going one with Lafayette. Something seems a little sketchy - recall they canceled a search last year. Either they have major funding problems with admin or they already know who they want and they just weren't available yet.
DeleteI skype interviewed with them in early october and never heard back
DeleteHas anyone heard anything from San Jose State, City College of New York, and Cal State Northridge?
ReplyDeleteI have not heard anything from SJSU yet.

ReplyDeleteI need community advice - I had a phone interview over a month ago for a position that since, according to posts on this forum, has both hosted on-site interviews AND sent notices to candidates who were contacted by phone but not invited on-site. I have received no update from this school, and when I contacted the search committee chair, I was told that I would be notified when 'more info was available,' so no help to date. What's going on here? Are they keeping me on standby in case all of their interviewees fall through (kinda good?), or do they care about me so little that they can't even be bothered (despite the phone interview)? Please help!
ReplyDeleteWhat a frustrating situation! I'd imagine you are a back-up if their in person interviews fall through. It is very annoying they won't tell you that. I heard from one place a few days after the Skype interview that I am the back up, so it is possible for them to tell you that. Why is keeping you in the dark an advantage for the search committee?!
DeleteI’m in a similar situation at one of the schools, had the phone interview awhile back, but haven’t received a rejection email. And it seems they already scheduled on-site with some candidates and sent rejection emails to others. I assume it’s a No and haven’t emailed the search chair for more info. However what if the “backup” candidate has received and accepted an offer somewhere else by the time the said school reached out (in case all on-site interviews flopped) wouldn’t that result in a failed search for them?
DeleteWhy not just send an e-mail and ask? If they are considering you, they aren't going to not give you an interview for simply inquiring politely. Make it clear that you are putting together your interview schedule and are wondering if they can update your application.
DeleteReed is scheduling on campus interviews
ReplyDeleteAnyone heard from Bowdoin?
ReplyDeleteUniversity of Minnesota is starting to schedule phone interviews (open position)
ReplyDeleteSeton Hill is scheduling Skype interviews
ReplyDeleteFranklin and Marshall is scheduling onsite interviews.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know the timeline for final decisions post-onsite? Say a school you had an onsite with just had their last one this Monday. Should we expect a response (either an offer or a rejection) a week after the last interview? 2 weeks?
ReplyDeleteMy understanding is that it highly depends on whether you are the committee's first preference. If yes, then it may be pretty soon after the last interview. If not, then the committee will likely wait to notify you until their first preference has officially accepted their offer.
DeleteDepends. The negotiations for my current job took over a month. There were eight back and forths with startup before we settled on a number and then there were issues with lab space guarantees and teaching assignments. I was the last candidate to visit and offered the job 10 days later and finally accepted it once negotiations were over 34 days later. So the first candidate likely didnt get a rejection letter for close to two months after they interviewed.
Delete@11:28 AM: Are you at the R1 or PUI level? It seems like what you described is negotiating at the R1 level and perhaps PUI offers/rejections work a bit faster? Just curious...
DeleteI’m at a research intensive PUI... first time they came back with my startup was less than half of what I asked for. Incremental increases to my original asking value. Then suddenly my lab wouldn’t be available for a year and a half and I’d have to squat in another lab. Then finally they refused to put any language about my specific teaching assignments in there .. I should have seen the signs... alas this time around I’m more on it. I think this is a unique situation but then again I’m providing you with precedent for a longer waiting period.
DeleteAll of the official deadlines I got were 1 week. That was able to be extended during active negotiations (i.e., startup) but schools were also pretty concerned about drawing out negotiations and losing another potential candidate.
DeleteSaint Joseph’s is scheduling on site visits
ReplyDeleteIs this University of Saint Joseph in Connecticut?
DeleteNope. NY
DeleteAnyone with experience with US Naval Academy or similar institutions? Did it seem like same process or did they go differently being a government job? And anyone heard anything this cycle?
ReplyDeleteSo far, the process with VMI seems similar to the other PUIs, except for an application that has to be submitted via a government website...
DeleteMy experience was pretty normal, but once you are hired you have to go through the process of becoming a federal employee. This sounds terrible, but it isn't too much more work than getting hired anywhere else. The only big difference was a background check that took a while to fill out.
DeleteIn my experience in applyng, there was no phone interview. I was one day invited to visit for an on site interview without talking on the phone or Skype first. I wasn't contacted until mid to late January, so do not be surprised that you have not heard.
Not hearing anything until late to mid January would be tough for those that might be considering other offers and may have to give a response before then.
DeleteYes, that is true - unfortunately there is no way around it.
DeleteIs there going to be a post-mortem analysis here in a few months where people can discuss their failures and what they thought worked well for them and what didn't help their application?
ReplyDeleteThis process is so opaque, and I'd love to hear the multitude of experiences so I can learn more for next year's attempts.
"This process is so opaque, and I'd love to hear the multitude of experiences so I can learn more for next year's attempts."
DeleteAgreed 100%, but because of this, I'm not sure what good can come of a post-mortem. This is my third year of applications, and I have received identically zero feedback on any of my applications - there's nothing to analyze, because I have no idea what 'worked' and what didn't...
I am in a similar situation as anon @ 8:31 AM and agree 100%.
Deletei accidentally did a pretty good experiment here. i applied last year with effectively the same material as this year. slight tweaks to some documents, one letter of rec from a more famous person than last year, but really very little change. last year i got i think 4 phone interviews and 2 offers (one PUI, one R2/3). This year not a single phone call. conclusion, if there is one, is that i think there's a lot more random chance/noise here than we would like to believe.
DeleteI'm fairly certain the process is completely random and basically the opposite of equal opportunity. As a visiting position, I've been a part of several search committees and have had access to others' application materials. I've garnered some ideas from other successful candidates and it's still totally random who I get contact from and who I don't (for even a phone interview).
DeleteI'm assuming Washington and Lee has scheduled/conducted onsites by now? Skype interviewed a long time ago but haven't heard.
ReplyDelete@3:39 pm I also Skype interviewed with WLU in early October and have not heard anything back from them yet.
DeleteAnyone heard from Baylor for physical and Inorganic?

DeleteBaylor has scheduled at least one on-campus interview for the Physical Chemistry position.
DeleteBaylor has their shortlist for physical and inorganic positions and is scheduling on-site interviews.
DeleteUniversity of Houston (experimental physical chemistry of polymers) is scheduling on-site.
ReplyDeleteCollege of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University is scheduling phone interviews
ReplyDeleteUniversity of Wisconsin--Madison has posted a large slate of special seminars.
ReplyDeleteAnyone heard from UC Irvine about the Chem Bio position?
ReplyDeleteLooks like emory has picked its candidates too: http://chemistry.emory.edu/home/about/calendar.html
ReplyDeleteEmory is interviewing strictly female candidates. Interesting.
Delete@10:52 PM: I don't think that is true...
DeleteMostly*?
Delete@11:51 PM: I think that is true...
DeleteOut of eight postdoc seminars, seven presenters are female, and one is male. This is exactly what U Chicago did last year, had one male and seven or eight female candidates. At that level, the male is a token guy, and Emory is clearly only aiming to hire a woman. They should have saved us the time preparing applications, and our recommenders' time submitting letters, and just stated it in the ad (wait, that would be illegal...).
DeleteNot even that, you can clearly see who they plan to hire if there is only one position to fill. Luckily, I didn't submit an application.
DeleteOr perhaps the female candidates are the strongest applicants?
DeleteA lot goes into a decision: was your research too close to someone else’s already there? Did they phone interview better? Are their letters stronger? Was their research statement more engaging or have the potential to have more deliverables? You can’t know that.
It appears that out of 22 tenured/tenure-track faculty positions at Emory, only 3 (14%) are women. Clearly, this is not adequate representation. How else can a department try to improve their gender representation? Also, @10:14 AM raises an excellent point, we have no idea whether or not these candidates happen to be the strongest for the position. Are we also going to start criticizing departments for interviewing mostly male candidates? Hasn't interviewing mostly male candidates been the norm for decades?
Delete@Anon 10:14 AM - we can't say that a specific female candidate wasn't great, as we have so few details about them. This is why I don't discuss specific people. But I do know this - (i) the applicant pool for these tenure-track roles is majority men (a number I've seen for one search was 80%); (ii) we have no basis to assume that the female candidates would be better on average than the men. This leads us to expect a majority male interviewee pool, if there's no discrimination involved.
DeleteAccounting for natural variability in small numbers, some range is possible - so if one or two women (of eight candidates) would be most likely given the above, zero or four women would also be reasonable. Seven out of eight is far beyond this.
Counterpoint - the initial applicant pool is usually 200-400 people, but the majority are considered weak candidates (e.g., no postdoc; very poor pub record; low-ranked institutions, esp. foreign); perhaps females are less likely to apply from such a position, so that the female proportion of the top 50 is higher than the overall pool.
@Anon 10:50 AM - Representation - is the point to hire the best person for the job? Or to artificially hire women? If so, why not advertise a position for women only?
"Are we also going to start criticizing departments for interviewing mostly male candidates" - what do you mean, start? That's what's been going on for years, and in your own reply you criticize the department for having so few women. How do you know that the men there weren't all the best candidates, had the most compelling statements, etc.?
Basically, you're not denying the likelihood of discrimination here, but arguing for discrimination as a legitimate tool.
I'm not going to discuss (now) if discrimination to change your department's make up is okay, but lets look at the math.
DeleteThe likelihood of 7-8 out of 8 interview candidates being female for a given population of male applicants:
50% male: 3.5%
60% male: 0.85%
70% male: 0.13%
80% mae: 0.008%
This is a pedagogical forum, so learn this: the binomial distribution is your friend. Run your own numbers in Excel using:
binom.dist(number of males, total interviews, percent male applicants, true)
For the 19/22 comment, consider this--if the 80% male applicant rate is true, the MOST LIKELY number of males in the department is 18, only one less than the current number. The probability of 19 or more males out of 22 is 33.2%. And remember that several of these positions were hired in the distant past, where male-applicant rate probably approached 100%.
The 7/8 comment starting this (likely) has nothing to do with the poster's views on the competence of female Ph.D.'s. Instead, it's just common-sense statistics.
This discussion has run its useful course. There are plenty of other places on the internet to discuss issues of gender and hiring.

ReplyDeleteTo ChemJobber and some more experienced people on job posting. I have the impression that the number of TT job posted has dramatically decreased this November, do you think that the openings are all gone or will there be some sort of increase after January 1st?
ReplyDeleteThis is typical, I would only expect one new posting per day on average, usually by January/Feb the postings seems to die off completely for TT jobs. The trend seems to be on track from previous years. See: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15MMlnrLAXX9g12eGaAs-Osm_iHDS8FNGeEmpYE0oPtE/edit#gid=1586275449
DeleteAlong similar lines, does it seem like R1 schools are taking longer than they have in previous years to contact candidates and set on-site interviews? Or is it more likely that the results of those searches aren't public knowledge yet? (e.g. Stanford, MIT, Cornell, Austin, Irvine, etc)
Delete15-20% of positions that were posted in 2017 and 2018 came after November 30. That's 80-100 positions, fwiw.
DeleteI do agree with Anon0724AM that it does seem like the pace of postings has slowed dramatically. The pace of reposting (he said irritatedly) is increasing, however.
