ReplyDeleteHappy Chanukah, everyone!
ReplyDeleteIs there any merit to having people post if they have an offer and from what institution? Or is that just an overall bad idea?
ReplyDeleteWhere'd you get an offer from?
DeleteNo offer yet.
DeleteIt would likely help the few other people that have interviewed there, especially if you state whether or not you intend to accept the offer. I do wonder how often search committees check this forum.
DeleteBut I'd be surprised if anyone posted this information. It makes everyone look bad (hiree, other candidates, college).
DeleteI think it would be best if there were no references to people; in the past, there have been simple "Whatever U has made an offer" statements, which seem to not cause too much ruffling of feathers.
DeleteA couple of years ago, someone posted a name of an offered candidate and I deleted that.
If you also interviewed at the school, I can see the opportunity to be like, hey so umm, are you going to accept it or do I still have a chance at getting the job if I'm their #2? Could get a bit awkward though.
DeleteHas anyone heard from the Physical Chem searching from University of Maryland?
ReplyDeletesomeone know further information about materials chemistry - University of Tennessee Knoxville?
ReplyDeleteRutgers seems to be conducting onsites for its open search.
ReplyDeleteHas anybody heard anything from Washburn University, in Topeka, KS, about the Physical Chemistry position?
ReplyDeleteAnyone hear anyone from Rice, for any position?
ReplyDeleteOffer was made for the Chemistry Assistant Professor position.
DeleteHas anyone applied for the medicinal chemistry position in VCU, Rutgers and Ohio state university or others? Heard anything?
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard anything from VCU and Rutgers.
DeleteThere are not many medicinal chemistry positions. How is your search going this year? Heard anything so far? I have not got anything.
DeleteDid you apply for Ohio State University?
DeleteNope.
DeleteAnonymous December 3, 2018 at 3:38 AM mentioned onsites for rutgers? Is this for the medicinal chem position?
DeleteIt does not look like it is the med chem position. The department of chemistry and chemical biology have three openings as well.
DeleteAny news from Clarkson U, Oregon State U, Oakland U, Virginia Commonwealth U, U of Iowa for physical chemistry searches?
ReplyDeleteI saw VCU has faculty candidate seminars listed in their events: https://chemistry.vcu.edu/events/
DeletePurdue lists candidates on their website (biophysical chemistry; joint).
ReplyDeleteWhere is it?
DeleteThose candidates seem really physical and are probably applying for the physical position.
DeleteRejection email from Davidson just received.
ReplyDeletelol, I got the rejection email, too. Just come to see if anyone has posted the info, and here we go. Hang on there, the email did say a chance of revisiting the candidate pool. ; )
DeleteDid you have on site interview or just phone?
DeleteAlso got my rejection today and wasn't interviewed in any capacity
DeleteThat's nice of them. Wish all schools would do that so that we aren't waiting hopelessly.
DeleteAny news from computational posts: Western Washington, NYU Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, UNC Computational Medicine, Rutgers chemistry and chemical biology, USC Chemistry and Biochemistry?
ReplyDeleteUniversity of Florida (Energy and Catalysis) is scheduling on-site interviews
ReplyDeleteBetter pack your jean shorts
DeleteI feel like JORTS would be a great name for a Energy and Catalysis Center in Florida...
DeleteUCSF are requesting references, not sure if that's for all applicants or those of interest to the committee
ReplyDeleteNortheastern University Chemistry scheduled onsite interviews
ReplyDeleteCMU (Chem Bio) is scheduling on-site interviews
ReplyDeleteDid they have skype interviews??
DeleteThey did for the Chem Bio opening
DeleteDuke has scheduled on-sites. [https://chem.duke.edu/events/seminars]
ReplyDeleteAny update on NDSU Medicinal chemistry position.
ReplyDeleteRejection email received from University of Puget Sound, saying the position has been filled. No interview for me with them, so I wish they have sent this type of email much earlier, instead of the very end of the search.
ReplyDeleteI interviewed on campus and received the rejection phone call before Thanksgiving. I should have posted it here.
DeleteAny update from Illinois State?
ReplyDeleteAnyone heard from columbia or georgia tech?
ReplyDeleteColumbia has posted a slate of postdoc seminars [https://chem.columbia.edu/events/] so you can probably cross off. Have not heard anything from GT.
DeleteAny news from Augusta University?
ReplyDeleteNothing yet... but I think their cut off date was Dec. 1st so maybe give it a few weeks...
DeleteHas anyone heard anything from Sloan Kettering, NIH, Spellman College or Institute of Molecular Engineering?
ReplyDeleteSpellman. Position filled.
DeleteNIH have scheduled on-site interviews for the Chem Bio opening
DeleteUniversity of San Francisco position filled
ReplyDeleteI can't believe these people don't send out emails. It's incredibly disheartening. Why would one want to collaborate or send students to these institutions in the future?
DeleteWhat happened at University of San Francisco chemistry dept?
DeleteIt looks like they had some retirements...but there were ALSO two mid-career *tenured* organic chemists: Megan Bolitho (got tenure there) and Jie Jack Lie (hired as associate).
Now they are memory-holed from the website, and no news on the web that I can see as to where they are....
There aren't any mentions of Megan Bolitho grants, or Jie Jack Lie publications, or both their student's previous successes. All of these used to be on the University of San Francisco Chemistry department site. You can find some of this stuff archived on the main university site if you look, but there's been some serious deleting.
All gone! Spooky! I doubt anyone from the department can comment - when things like this happen there are usually legal reasons why not - but perhaps someone else with knowledge of the situation can comment on what they've heard.
Has anyone heard from any of the Canadian schools: UBC Vancouver, Windsor, UofT, UVic, Memorial, York, or Sherbrooke? They are really taking their time compared to US institutions..
ReplyDeleteI only applied to UVic, and haven't heard anything yet. I emailed before the posting closed to ask about reference letters, they said they expected to have a short list in about one month (i.e. early December), and would request reference letters from short listed candidates then.
DeleteThe University of Toronto has scheduled on-site interviews.
DeleteUBC Vancouver is doing Skype interviews.
DeleteHas anyone heard anything from UT Southwestern for Biochem?
ReplyDeleteNothing yet...
DeleteRejection from Nebraska Medical Center
ReplyDeleteChemical Biology/Medicinal Chemistry position?
DeleteAnyone heard from Iowa(physical), Stanford, Notre Dame (analytical)?
ReplyDeleteDid UMass Lowell schedule onsites? I only heard phone a while back.
ReplyDeleteI think they are doing onsites
DeleteUMass Lowell already did onsite in the end of November, but not sure whether the offer is out or now.
DeleteAnyone have follow up from Eastern Illinois, Nazareth or Emmanuel after phone interviews?
ReplyDeleteHaven't heard back from Emmanuel after the phone interview either
DeleteNazareth already did on sites.
DeleteYale (chem bio joint with MCDB) is scheduling on-site.
ReplyDeleteAnything from U Texas Arlington?
ReplyDeleteRejection e-mail fr. Northwestern.
ReplyDeletex2
DeleteTexas state (inorganic) is scheduling on-sites
ReplyDeleteI thought it'd be interesting to note which departments already posted candidate seminars, but haven't sent rejection emails. After people spent quite a while preparing an application (even rather minor customization plus navigating silly HR websites, can take a couple of hours), and recommenders spend time submitting letters, the very least a department can do is send a polite rejection email. I mean, it's not like we're cold-emailing them, these department solicited applications from us.
ReplyDeleteHere are several I applied to, heard nothing from, and saw they already posted candidate seminars:
Penn State, Columbia, U Michigan, UC-Berkeley, U Chicago, Rutgers-New Brunswick.
I encourage people to post schools that have clearly moved on, but that they have not received rejection e-mails from, and also the timeline, i.e. if it's July and we still haven't heard from these folks, then one is never going to be forthcoming.
DeleteI know that the exact time of rejection e-mails is an item for intense debate, i.e.
1. after phone/Skype screen?
2. after in-person interviews?
3. after offers made?
4. after offers accepted
Also, who deserves the courtesy of a rejection e-mail?
A. Anyone who made a full application?
B. Anyone who was phone screened?
C. Anyone who was interviewed in person?
Finally, what is the method of rejection?
A. by e-mail
B. by letter (lol)
C. by phone
This is a long-term project that I want to use in order to encourage change in the community.
for the record, it seems to me that the ideai is:
Deleteafter milestone 2, all those who made a full application receive an e-mail
after milestone 4, those who were interviewed in person receive a phone call or a letter
Also, I would like a pony for Christmas.
I'm not sure if there is an annual survey done, but that may be a useful question to collect responses on. Not sure how to structure it to make the data to collect, but if possible being able to check off from the mighty long chemjobber list with "applied, never heard back from" with various options on if you got a phone interview or an on-site.
DeleteTiming: I think schools can and should send out rejections in steps, just like they sort the applications – so after step 1, 2, 3 and 4. We shouldn’t have to rely on word of mouth and reports on this thread. If a school has scheduled phone interviews, and they’re not interviewing me – let me know. Same for on-site interviews. I mean, that’s a public step, so why do I need to find out from their website, rather than get a simple email about it? All the large schools, at least, use proper automated systems, so sending out form letters should be trivial.
DeleteMethod: Personally, I prefer emails. Physical letters are harder to file and retrieve, and just delay the news. Phone calls are awkward, and while I appreciate the personal touch, it also feels like being put on the spot, with a person you really don’t know (even after a phone / site interview). An email lets me process on my own time, without feeling a pressure to respond, be gracious, or anything like that. For a rejection after a phone / site interview, though, I expect a personal email, not a generic email.
(this is my second year applying, so I’ve been through this).
From my applications last year, here are school that never bothered sending a rejection, at any time at all: NYU, Princeton, Stanford, Rutgers, UC-Riverside, UCSD, UT-Knoxville.
Some schools hold a pool of candidates in case they want to go back to the pool if no offers are made/accepted. But even in that case, it seems like the school could let the candidates know that interviews had been scheduled, but they were still in a back-up pool. I think more information/openness about the process would be best for everyone. This is my second year on the job market and I did receive at least one email like that last year.
DeleteHere are schools that never sent a rejection email from last year: UChicago, Princeton, Carnegie Melon, Delaware, Boston College, UPenn, Tufts, Temple, Brandeis
The Black Hole List is growing. Keep it up, folks.
DeleteOur HR won't let us send out any updates on the status of the search until an offer has been accepted, even for those that we have no intention of reconsidering if our top pick(s) reject our offer. I hate it, just like I hated not knowing when I was on the other side of the search committee, but it's also not a battle I'm going to win against the university legal team. I know different schools have different policies.
DeleteI think that's fair, i.e. it's reasonable that each institution has its policies. It seems to me that the only thing that's not acceptable is "no word, never" (or, at least, that's where I would like to begin focusing my attention.)
DeleteI have to break with CJ here. There is no legal reason for a policy like this, it's an entirely arbitrary decision by a few people. As such, it can be just as easily reversed, and if a university cares about its reputation, it can do so. While it may not be the search committee's fault, it is the university's, and so such behavior should be publicized. If departments feel the heat, they'll bother advocating for this trivial change, and it'll happen.
DeleteFrom my own past experience, some universities (e.g. UC Riverside) did not even inform unsuccessful finalists who had interviewed on-site. It's not that difficult to e-mail 4 or 5 individuals.
DeleteI have to disagree strongly with the phone call. It might make the search committee feel like they are being nice but they are basically asking someone to be polite to them while getting rejected. This is not a breakup where an emotional response is OK so asking someone to schedule a phone call to get rejected is just asking the candidates to do emotional labor for the search committee.
DeleteNow I do think that searches should send personal emails to everyone who came onsight and update emails (or rejection emails) depending on the university rules in a timely manor especially to anyone who had a skype/phone interview but ideally to anyone who completed an application (although I will note that our university only counts an application as complete when it has all its letters).
My only other comment is that there is often a lot of complaining about universities not getting back to candidates and I would just point out that this is a systemic issue in the job market generally and if you apply to industry positions you are even more in the dark since there is no way to know the actual hiring timeline.
That's a fair point re: phone call.
DeleteThis is all... just the worst.
ReplyDeleteAnyone got phone/onsite interview for med chem positions?
ReplyDeleteHi everyone, is there always a phone interview before on-site interview? Or it depend on the school? Thanks !
ReplyDeleteTotally depends on the school!
DeleteThanks !
DeleteBlue Screen of Death the week of your first on-site: priceless
ReplyDeleteGood thing today's phone interview wasn't a Skype interview :)
Anyone heard from Wichita state for Inorganic Chem hiring?
ReplyDeleteVCU nanoscience is scheduling phone interviews
ReplyDeleteOSU is scheduling video interviews.
ReplyDeleteThere are many places that go by OSU, as I have learned from years of college football. Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Oregon State. Which one?
DeleteI think the original comment is referring to Oregon State. They are video interviewing ~20 candidates in the next 2 weeks (starting Monday) and will have on-sites in January.
DeleteCandidates from which sub-field?
DeleteI am personally a hybrid experimental/computational physical organic chemist working on branching out into chemical biology during my postdoc (if anyone from the search committee checks this page, which I often wonder how often this occurs, they'll likely figure out who I am). Anyway, I couldn't tell you what they like best about me (i.e. which sub-field), but it seems I've had the best success with organic postings.
DeleteP.S. Maybe I AM a robot
UNC Chapel Hill chemistry (open search) has scheduled on sites occurring over the next two weeks.
ReplyDeleteThey're not on the website - which subdiscipline did they end up focusing on if any?
DeleteA rough breakdown is 2 organometallic, 1 electrochemistry, 1 chem bio, 1 physical/spectroscopy (5 total)
DeleteWho wants to live in North Carolina anyway???
DeleteUnless you are the star, there are not many options lol
DeleteAny of those computational/theoretical?
DeleteNone of the candidates seem to be comp/theory.
DeleteHas anyone heard from Whitworth University or Fort Lewis College?
ReplyDeleteI had a Skype interview with Fort Lewis College in early October and got a rejection email from them in early November.
DeleteDamn, that terrible feeling when you see faculty candidate seminars go up at a place where you phone/skype interviewed without ever hearing from the department.
ReplyDeleteWant to mention who to potentially help someone else out?
DeleteRejection email received from
ReplyDeleteU San Francisco
And
Univ.of Utah Chem Ed
Anyone know information about Physical Chem searching from Marquette University?
ReplyDeleteAnyone hear from Irvine or Riverside?
ReplyDeleteNothing from Irvine yet for either the chemical biology position or the open position.
DeleteWaiting to hear after phone interviews is the worst feeling ever. Every time I check this I'm afraid of seeing "(School) is now scheduling on-site interviews."
ReplyDeleteSame. UNCG said they were trying to bring people in before the holidays, and unless my math is wrong that means I'm probably not coming in...
DeleteGood luck!
Same with ASU. They wanted to do on-sites before the holidays. I haven't heard anything one way or the other, but I'm guessing the train left the station without me
DeleteSame. I have reached back out to schools after hearing nothing after the phone interview. One told me I wasn't on the "short" list, but if they bring in additional candidates I am on that list. I guess I'll take that as good news.
DeleteGood for you having the will 4:18...I haven’t had the heart to email anyone to ask what happened after my Skype interview
DeleteThe worst part about not getting an onsite after a phone interview is that they clearly liked your research and think you're qualifications are good, but didn't like you as a person, assuming you don't obviously mess up a question. :(
DeleteNot necessarily. They might decide after screening they want to go in one research direction over another. For open searches they are likely screening people with different interests and might decide to focus just on inorganic or just on chembio after screening a bunch of folks. I wouldn't take it personally.
DeleteHad a phone interview awhile back, then received an email saying they can only invite a small number of candidates and consider me to be an alternate so I took that as a rejection. Then several weeks later, I received an invite for an on-site interview. Does that mean they weren’t impressed with the “top choices” and I may stand a better chance provided I don’t mess up my interview? Or they just want to interview a few more people before making a decision?
DeleteI assume wanting to move from one coast to the other is also pushing me down the list. The flights to bring me in from a small town far away are expensive and if there is an equally qualified candidate that is closer/local, maybe they want to interview them first. I know I've heard people on search committees say just that.
DeleteUCSB has a single seminar and chalk talk posted, not sure which search or why there is only one
ReplyDeleteLooks like there are two that are listed on calendar. Googled names, look ChemBio-ish
DeleteJust two? :((
DeleteHas anyone heard from Gonzaga?
ReplyDeleteGonzaga started scheduling on-sites end of November
DeleteAny news on UCSD Biochem/Biophys search? Seminars have been posted for the parallel synthesis/materials search. Priority date was Oct. 1, so seems like they should have made some decisions but maybe the biochemists are just slow?
ReplyDeleteNo news or scheduled seminars yet for the UCSD biochem/biophys search. No sure what the hold up is for.
DeleteHas anyone heard anything from NYU or CUNY chemistry dep?
ReplyDeleteA colleague here got interview from NYU
Delete:((( video or on-site interview?
DeleteHow recently contacted for NYU?
Deleteon-site
DeleteWhat do you make of only one faculty candidate seminar posted? Could they be inviting candidates over an extended period of time? Or have they extended all invitations and are just waiting to confirm dates and receive abstracts? Wondering if I should just let go of that one last strand of hope...
ReplyDeleteKeep the last strand of hope... this is all I have for now...
DeleteCandidates are sometimes posted online as they confirm dates (which can take additional time if they are trying to work around other schools' schedules) and/or as talk titles are confirmed. There likely isn't an admin itching to update confirmed candidates online the moment they send an email to accept an invitation.
ReplyDeleteRejection received from UPenn after Skype interview.
ReplyDeletePenn State Biochem is scheduling onsites
ReplyDeleteWhat do you guys think about being on a search committee while applying for jobs elsewhere? Do you feel obligated to tell candidates why you are trying to leave (if it is institutional or departmental issues)? What if you know layoffs/budget cuts are coming?
ReplyDeleteI am in a search committees this year and I am currently applying for other jobs in other states. My colleagues do not know that so I do not think I am going to tell the candidates about this.
DeleteIt has been asked last year, but for this year, do search committees find that there is a higher proportion of assist/associate Prof applying to transfer to another university, especially from lower tier R1 and PUIs ?
DeleteUIUC has scheduled interviews.
ReplyDeleteFor a posting that purported to focus on organic, they only seem to be interviewing two organic chemists...
DeleteThat posting was open, and listed no special interest (https://jobs.illinois.edu/academic-job-board/job-details?jobID=101790&job=college-of-liberal-arts-and-sciences-open-rank-tenure-track-faculty-department-of-chemistry-101790 ).
DeleteAlso - another department that doesn't bother rejecting applicants, or even informing them that candidates have been invited on site. Classy.
Has anyone heard anything from City College of NY, SFSU, San Jose State U, FSU, George Washing U, UCR, and Clemson?
ReplyDeleteNothing from UCR yet.
DeleteClemson had Skype last Tuesday/Thursday. Oregon State and Ball State also started scheduling Skype interviews.
DeleteWasn’t Clemson organic and FSU analytical? Did you apply to both?
DeleteAnon @ 4:17 AM. Is the scheduling for organic for all three schools, ie. Clemson, Ball State and Oregon State. Can you be more specific about the search areas. I know Ball State has both organic and biochemistry searches ongoing.
Delete@Anon 10:38 am - Ball State is scheduling Skype interviews for Organic position. Not sure about the other two schools.
DeleteAnon A 3:16 PM. Does very quick. Deadline was 11/30 which is just 8 days ago. I guess they are very serious about getting someone as soon as possible.
DeleteClemson is Organic, Oregon State is open I believe, and yeah Ball State is also Organic. Sorry for the lack of details, I don't look at the spreadsheet much anymore, so I have no clue who has multiple listings.
DeleteUNC Chapel Hill is scheduling Skype interviews
ReplyDeleteReally? They already did a round of Skype interviews, and they are currently doing on-site interviews. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think they've finished on-site interviews yet.
DeleteWhich department ? What position? Thanks !
DeleteSorry, should have specified. This is the "Chemical Biology of the Genome" joint position not the open position with an earlier deadline.
ReplyDeleteAh, that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.
DeleteTo 6:24 - the position I was referring to at UNC Chapel Hill (this is 6:06) was the open position with the 10/15 priority deadline.
anyone know information for Physical Chem hearing from George Mason University?
ReplyDeleteHas anyone heard anything from Georgia State University, position in the broadly defined fields of Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology?
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of "hit rate" are most people getting for interviews at PUIs? I've applied to ~50 places so far this year and have had 4 phone/skype interviews and 0 on-site interviews and last year I applied to 22 places and got 3 phone interviews and 0 on-site interviews, giving me an overall yield of ~10% for phone interviews. Are other people getting similar yields of phone interviews?
ReplyDeleteI have applied to 33 schools, some of them just or not yet had the priority date. But out of the ones the priority date has passed, so far, I had 3 phone interviews, and 2 of that turned to be on site interviews. About these on-sites, the first one was about a month ago, and I never heard back (even after emailing the Dept Chair asking about the result), so I suppose I was not selected for that position. The second on-site is scheduled to happen in a couple of days.
DeleteI applied to 21 PUI so far with 2 phone interviews (one pending/one not selected), 1 mailed rejection letter, and nothing else so far. I believe <10 are still in the early (pre-phone) stage based on reporting on here.
DeleteApplied to ~25 schools, mostly PUIs with a few selected R1. Only heard back from PUIs & Masters level schools - 11 phone/Skype interviews, 5 on-sites,1 offer (1 rejection after on-site) so far. Still waiting on 3 on-sites. This is my first year applying.
ReplyDeleteI have so far 6 phone/Skype interviews but 0 on-site invitations (applied ~40 schools). Given 20 min or so of phone/Skype interview times, what do you all think is the most important thing to be stand out among other ~15 candidates and make on-sites? Or phone/Skype doesn’t have much impact to make search committee change their preferred order list already set during initial screening process (assuming those didn’t mess up phone/Skype). I really have no clue how to ace phone/Skype interviews…
ReplyDeletei'd like to know the same thing...
DeleteWilliams has made an offer for one of the positions. Don’t know about the other.
ReplyDeleteUNC Asheville position is filled
ReplyDeleteUW La Crosse has made an offer
ReplyDeleteI heard that Hamilton position is filled
ReplyDeleteRegarding the two Biochemistry positions in the Chemistry Department at the Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) campus of SUNY. This Department has a strong PhD program. I mention this because have had job seekers skip past our ads because they saw the word "College" in our name.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know what's going on with Stanford? I've heard sporadic rumors about phone interviews but not much else.
ReplyDeleteThey have conducted very quick video interviews.
Deletewhich department/position is this for?
DeleteI think open? Has anyone heard from Chem-H?
DeleteFirst year applying - PUIs and MS institutions - 44 applications submitted (some are still pending deadlines), 24 phone/skype interview invitations, 15 onsite invitations (only was able to go on 6), 2 offers at time of decision.
ReplyDeleteRejections: 5 rejections w/o interview, 1 rejection after phone interview, many that I haven't heard any news from
Also first year applying, PUIs only. 14 applications, 6 video/phone interviews, 5 onsite invitations (4 completed, 1 to go), 2 places I visited have told me they have offered to someone else. So I'm still very much in limbo at this moment, but I remain hopeful.
ReplyDeleteI've submitted 62 applications (mostly R1), heres my breakdown so far:
ReplyDeletePhone/Skype Interviews: 6 (3 progressed to onsite, 1 rejected after interview, 1 waiting to hear from and 1 still to happen)
Onsite Interviews: 7 (3 following phone/skype, 4 directly invited onsite. 1 done and waiting to hear, 6 still to happen)
Rejections: 4 (3 via automated email, 1 when I contacted the search committee after the skype and hadn't heard anything)
No response yet: 48!
First year applying - 23 applications to R1s
ReplyDeletePhone/skype interviews - 2 (1 rejection, 1 still waiting)
On sites - 0 so far
RIP
Same exact breakdown here.
DeleteI know it's been mentioned before, but damn it do I hate the lack of communication by search committees. One month after a Skype interview and still nothing. I vow to change the practice, at least at whatever school I end up. If thousands of undergrads and grad students can get rejection letters from schools, then so should we.
ReplyDeleteThis process has made me feel like I have zero value, and the fact that committees can't be bothered to send an email just underscores it, in big bright yellow highlighter.
DeleteIs it just me or has it been quiet recently? By my count there are a bunch of schools no one has reported hearing from and the pace of postings here about interview requests has slowed down a lot.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you
DeleteHas anyone applied for a Max Planck group leader position? If yes, have you heard any thing?
ReplyDeleteNot this year, but did so a few years ago. Back then at least, they did send out a generic rejection e-mail to unsuccessful applicants. I remember it well because they sent it on Xmas Eve...
DeleteDoes anybody here have any input about the PhD "expiration date" for search committees? For people who have been doing several postdocs for a period of over a decade, do search committees still consider those people for TT and NTT jobs?
ReplyDeleteNowadays bio-focused TT jobs are super competitive and pretty common to get a TT position as a senior postdoc.
DeleteI have been told I should be concerned about this as this is my fifth year as a postdoc and I am looking at another failed attempt at securing a TT position this year. The chances seem to go down significantly each year, no matter how productive you are in terms of research and how good your proposal is. I got similar feedback from a friend who secured a TT position a couple of years back and has been on a search committee.
ReplyDeleteUniversity of South Carolina Upstate is scheduling phone interviews for their biochemistry faculty position.
ReplyDeleteIt is disappointing if there is a negative correlation between length of post-doc and the chance of a TT position. It seems many search committees would rather assume the circumstance causing long post-docs rather than talking to the individual applicants.
ReplyDeleteI have heard this before too and it is really discouraging. It is discriminatory and it disfavors postdocs who took risks in their postdocs like changing fields and anyone who had to take family/maternity/paternity leave, etc. It seems like this is a chemistry problem, my impression is that in biological fields, longer postdocs are more normal and have less of a stigma.
DeleteI know someone who did a 5-year(!) postdoc and is now a professor at a department in the top 15 or so. It helped that his postdoc was under a famous bigshot. I was always really surprised when I would periodically check up on him via Google and see that he still hadn't moved on from postdoc-ing after having been a superstar student in grad school.
DeleteThis is the situation for many of us out there. I'm wondering if someone reading this blog has had better chances with applications in other departments after long/several postdoc position(s) and wants to share his/her experience here. Also, are positions as research scientist in national labs considered part of postdoc training?
Delete@KT such cases seem to be quite rare according to my advisers.
DeleteThe main challenge for many of us is to identify ways to offset this, for example, by publishing more, improving proposal, etc. In my case (5 years of postdoc and few years of applications), these do not seem to be having any impact, so all there is left for me is to secure another postdoc position or leave academia altogether. I am inclined towards doing another postdoc in a different sub-field, but maybe I am deluded based on my track record in job applications.
U Missouri Kansas City (Mat Sci) is scheduling phone interviews. Good luck potential future Roos.
ReplyDelete
