    1. I noticed GG has Associate Professors. Does it generally work the same way where after 3-5 you renew your contract and move up (to Assoc or Assoc to Full)? If this is just a new way to do the tenure track, it would be helpful to know.

      Delete
    2. In teaching universities appointments used to be tenure-track, and a faculty member would teach 3 or 4 courses. Nowadays, appointments are lecturer-level and for a lecturer there's 6 courses to teach. There is really no difference, except that a lecturer has no security of employment beyond the next year and no chance for advancement. The better organized places sometimes offer multi-year contracts to retain teaching faculty and have some institutional continuity, but most are deplorable pits of chaos. And over the chaos presides a chair with at most one paper out of their PhD, because in the 1990s, when retirement-ready faculty got their start, anyone capable could still find a job in industry.

      Delete
    3. @Confused - Yes it is similar but without the "safety" of tenure. Some people think it is a good way to keep faculty from coasting once they have tenure, others say it is more realistic in a right to work state where tenure may not be very meaningful.

@9:17am - These are not lecturer lines - the teaching loads are 4 courses and they do research - just like most PUIs. They just have no tenure and 3/4 year renewable contracts and you can apply for promotion at certain renewing times.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I still have a year of fellowship left, so I will probably try again next Fall. I had a couple interviews but no offers. I'm feeling old though (33), so I'm definitely feeling pressured to get started in my career. I may just apply for industry positions this spring and see what happens.

      Delete
    2. Trying a second time isn't so bad if you came close the first time, but after 2, it's probably time to move on, unless you have done something truly extraordinary in the last year or have it coming out soon, or there are some extenuating circumstances (i.e. your advisor(s) only write one "this is a superstar" letter per year and next year "it's your turn").

It's important to recognize what the numbers are. Tim Tebow didn't get to become an NFL QB despite it being his dream, because there are about 80 of those jobs in the entire world. So he went onto settling for being a highly paid commentator and getting engaged to Miss Universe.

      Delete
    3. Actually Tim Tebow was an NFL QB. He just didn't get tenure. He is also now a minor league baseball player- so maybe the answer is to go back to grad school in biology.

@6:43 Lol, except I'd say data science.

      Delete
    5. The weird part that I do not understand about Tebow is that he insisted on being an NFL QB, and not, say, an NFL fullback or an NFL tight end. I suppose that physical constraints had a role to play there, but still! (shrugs)

      Delete
    6. Maybe wide receiver?

Problem is, unless you're really good at a position, you're disposable, and even if you're really good at those positions, you're probably still expendable, while at quarterback, you could get along for awhile being mediocre if you're dependably so. In addition, you have more protection from losing your mind at quarterback than at other positions - being rich isn't worth as much to you if you have traumatic brain injuries (though that only implies that being in the NFL isn't a good idea for anyone). Even with the reduction in union power and pay potential, being in baseball is likely a better idea if you have a shot there.

      Delete
    7. It's a shame that Tebow can't pitch left-handed.

    5. FFS. I get the complaints about not hearing from the search committee after initial contact (valid). But to now say the letter wasn't "sincere" enough. Seriously?! Should the committee come and take you out for a coffee to let you down easy?

      Delete
    6. Sending everyone a letter stating that they’re impressive and totally capable of being a PI at an R1 university, just not the right fit is the part where I was questioning sincerity. I think it’s too nice and, in a way, giving all applicants a participation trophy. But sure, coffee sounds great. Extra cream and sugar for my sensitive palette please.

      Delete
    7. Maybe when I'm in charge of a search committee I will try to tell people what quartile they were in. 1. I told them the truth. The PUI invited me anyway. I turned that one down due to already receiving R1 invites.

      Delete
    2. Honesty is a good policy. Many of us may come from an R1-type institution and unless we are 100% sure where we want to end up in our careers, it is common to apply broadly. In fact, I recommend to apply broadly. The question is whether or not we would be open to learning more about a PUI, given that we may lack the personal experience with it. It would be important to NOT make a PUI feel inferior to an R1 because the two types of institution may have completely different foci, so it would not be a fair comparison. From the 9 interviews I have had or will have, my break down is: 1 R1, 6 PUI, and 2 MS. I had to decline an offer from a PUI but only because the committee was adamant about wanting a final response very early in the search, even before I had finished scheduling my other interviews. This has nothing to do with whether or not it was a PUI or R1, but rather because of the inflexible "final response date." Although, I do think that pushing for an early response date is a recruitment tactic in and of itself...

      Delete
    3. Speaking as someone on a PUI search committee- I can say that an interview sinks when we ask candidates “why a small liberal arts school” and their answer implies that we are their “safety” if they don’t get Harvard.

      Delete
    4. I second Anonymous Jan 21, 2019 at 6:48PM, or any R1 for that matter. Also speaking as someone on a PUI search committee.
Let me repeat what have been said many times:
Lots of PUIs are looking for a candidate that is an excellent instructor, who can perform a fair amount of research aiming to succeed in extramural "PUI focused" grant applications. Teaching (a lot with student evaluation that have weight) + Research (with time left on your hand) + Services (make your department and PUI happy), considering resources and research facilities constraint, is not a walk in the park for most of us on TT.
      Just saying.

      Delete
    5. Thanks to all of you for the responses. My situation is kind of awkward. I've was aiming for a career at a PUI since I started grad school, and pursued various teaching opportunities to prepare for it. A year and a half ago I got a very competitive postdoc fellowship and my postdoc advisors encouraged me to apply to R1 schools, which I was open to, but I still feel that I would be a better fit for a PUI. I was planning on doing the bulk of the applications next year once my postdoc work is published, but I am submitting some applications this year (as a very desirable place currently has an open position). I think I may have a chance of getting an interview at this desirable place, but I already half-heartedly submitted a few R1 applications a few months ago, and I hope that doesn't make it look like I'm looking for a backup. If I get an interview at this desirable PUI, I want to be able to convey that PUI was my career goal all along, despite having applied (unsuccessfully) to R1s. Can any of you provide advice for this, please? Thank you.

      Delete
    6. First general suggestion: Your CV, cover letter and other required documents submitted to a PUI should all start with your teaching skills based on all the activities that you took part in. Even better if you had initiative and you were able to adjunct somewhere, taught lectures or instructed lab during your PhD and Post-Doc. You will get points if you took part in extra teaching curriculum or attended seminars/lectures on teaching and ect...be succinct but clear about your passion (teaching to undergrad).

Now about your research interest: Once you have convinced the search committee about your teaching skills, that you will be an awesome helpful/resourceful colleague, that you did your homework on that particular PUI and you understand all the positive of being there (you read as much as you can on the PUI and department), how they will benefit to have you, they should be interested to hear about your research interests, again as long as your interests are student centered. It is not about you anymore, but about the undergrad. When discussing about what you have done in R1, then put that in perspective about how it will benefit the undergrad and the the depart, be student centered, it is not about you anymore.

Make it clear how your research will be of interest to undergrad (career, education, personal growth,...), how your research will be feasible despite the undergrad time constrained, the availability of equipment, funding and other resources at the PUI of interest. How your research project will lead to at minimum one publication per two years in a peer reviewed journal (taking in account your teaching load). Will you be able to get extramural funding specific for PUI ?

Take home message: In my opinion and limited experience as TT assist Prof in a PUI, it is exciting and refreshing to have colleges who have ambitious research projects as long as they don't take over the teaching, they are student centered, viable in a PUI system, can lead to peer reviewed publications, avoiding jealousy among faculty (you will be a team player) and that you will bring the necessary funding to do so if needed.

I stop here, there was my lunch break !

It is only my narrow perspective and results may vary from one PUI to another one, from one department to another one.

    1. More than likely they had a first choice and offered and then they declined. Once an offer has been declined, and if there wasn't a clear second choice, then they move to reopen the position. I do not know if this is what happened, just speculation. Not qualified, not a good fit, etc. are (mostly) subjective and vary greatly between departments (probably an obvious statement).

    4. Things are even worse about on sites when you spend a lot of your time and energy preparing for that, and then, you never hear again from the committee when the outcome is not positive. Basically they expect that you to guess if they hired somebody or not. For all on sites that I have gone so far, I could figure out that was not the selected candidate only through this forum. No email from the search committee nor from the HR.

It is not that hard to email 3 to 5 people saying that they found a better fit.

I see that as huge lack of respect from the search committee and institution to the candidates.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The department will likely meet and discuss their top candidate within one week of the final on-site interview. The top candidate will be notified of the offer very soon after the faculty have made their decision. The other candidates will hear nothing until the offer has been accepted or declined. If the offer is declined, they can move to their next candidate. When I received an offer, I contacted all of the department chairs from the schools I visited to let them know. Only then did they open up about the status of their offers and what their plan was.

    5. The acceptance of an offer can actually take some time if there are some negotiations involved. I know when we had a search, it took nearly 1 month to actually get the candidate to accept. Some of that was due to people being out/traveling and some due to quite a bit of back-and-forth. So, if you are a second/third "choice", and if you were earlier in the on-site process, it could very easily be a couple months. I don't think there are any departments/companies that contact people during the process and say, "oh, hey, we are waiting on someone else to make finish their negotiations and if it falls through, we'll get back with you". It sucks, but the process isn't quick as all offers are fluid with many people that have to "sign off" on any new change.

    3. That is what happens when institutions do not bother notifying the candidates excluded from the process.

The positions are filled, and candidates never know whether they should have hope or not. Institutions, please be more mindful to the candidates. They spent time composing their application documents the best they could. Most time they have a family to support too, they need to know as soon as possible to plan their future.

So, if a position was filled please notify ALL the candidates who applied (not only the ones that made on campus interview), so they can move on with their search and lives.

Also, do not give the excuse that is impossible, there are many automatic email systems that may work for those types of situation.

    6. OP here. A simple note on the website would be helpful as an alternative to emails. Many don't even note they have a search going. But I know outdated websites are still in vogue in academia...
