UC Berkeley is sending rejections for the single position in the Dept of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. I assume this means they selected people for interviews now.
ReplyDeleteUMKC Materials Science is scheduling onsites
ReplyDeleteUniversity of North Texas posted seminar schedules for the pchem position.
ReplyDeleteI just received official rejection from UC-Irvine (Chemical Biology) by e-mail.
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to count this as a rejection because they cancelled the search.
DeleteI like your thinking!
DeleteStatement from UCI Chemistry:
Delete"We have decided to take our Chemical Biology faculty search in a different direction this year. Note that the UCI Department of Chemistry has two other active faculty searches taking place this quarter."
Rejection from Cornell College - position filled
ReplyDeleteAny news from Guelph, UWO (either position), or York?
ReplyDeleteYork is interviewing for both their research/TT faculty positions this month. I think they had a lecturer posting that I don't know the status of. No word from Western but I heard they won't begin to contact short listed candidates until late Jan-early Feb.
DeleteUC San Diego started advertising recruitment seminars for the biochem/biophys position.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know anything about the chem bio position at UC San Diego (Department of Chem and Biochem)?
ReplyDeleteAny news from NYU or UWash Chem Eng?
ReplyDeleteSpelman College is sending the rejection letters out.
ReplyDeletethat was a weird letter
DeleteI didn't even get one?

DeleteI contacted to the hiring manager for University of Virginia (Chemical Biology, med chem, bioanalytical) position asking for an update. The response said they have invited candidates for interviews.
ReplyDeleteUT Southwestern Biochem rejections sent out
ReplyDeleteReceived here as well.
DeleteSame, same.
DeleteAnyone got onsite interview invitation from Uni of kansas for med chem position?
ReplyDeleteHas anyone heard anything from University of Denver after their phone interview??? It's been over a month.
ReplyDeleteI've heard nothing either and I've emailed to ask - no reply to that either
DeleteHas anyone heard from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Institute Chemical Biology program? Was there phone/skype interview or onsite interivew?
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard anything.
DeleteHas anyone known any updates from UMass Lowell Analytical Chemistry?
ReplyDeleteUntil now, I haven't get any updates from most of applied schools, is it OK to contact the department on the updates of application?
ReplyDeleteWhen I am told that my name will be kept until the position is filled, is it hopeless or any possible miracles?
ReplyDeleteSounds there is hope.
DeleteI am in the same boat: I am hopeful expecting a good email any day now, but still checking this site every day expecting to see that the position has been filled.
DeleteAny word from Oregon State, VCU, or Tennessee?
ReplyDeleteWhat positions?
DeleteDoes that change if you've heard from any of them? Have you heard from one for multiple positions?
DeleteVCU asked for reference letter a while ago and was quiet after.
DeleteOregon State has done phone interviews for at least one of the positions
DeleteOpen, essentially open, and open
DeleteAnything since the Skype/Zoom/phone for any of the 3?
Deleteyou mean the Open Rank Professor of Physical Chemistry from VCU??
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting that Georgia Gwinnett made it to this list, but FGCU did not. Both do not have tenure, but have renewable multi-year contracts. Some people think this is the future of higher ed...
ReplyDeleteYou're right - I deleted it.
DeleteI noticed GG has Associate Professors. Does it generally work the same way where after 3-5 you renew your contract and move up (to Assoc or Assoc to Full)? If this is just a new way to do the tenure track, it would be helpful to know.
DeleteIn teaching universities appointments used to be tenure-track, and a faculty member would teach 3 or 4 courses. Nowadays, appointments are lecturer-level and for a lecturer there's 6 courses to teach. There is really no difference, except that a lecturer has no security of employment beyond the next year and no chance for advancement. The better organized places sometimes offer multi-year contracts to retain teaching faculty and have some institutional continuity, but most are deplorable pits of chaos. And over the chaos presides a chair with at most one paper out of their PhD, because in the 1990s, when retirement-ready faculty got their start, anyone capable could still find a job in industry.
Delete@Confused - Yes it is similar but without the "safety" of tenure. Some people think it is a good way to keep faculty from coasting once they have tenure, others say it is more realistic in a right to work state where tenure may not be very meaningful.
Delete@9:17am - These are not lecturer lines - the teaching loads are 4 courses and they do research - just like most PUIs. They just have no tenure and 3/4 year renewable contracts and you can apply for promotion at certain renewing times.

ReplyDeleteFor which position: Organic/Medicinal or Biochemistry?
DeleteI'm not the OP, but I was contacted today for the biochemistry position.
DeleteThey have two openings as mentioned by Anon @ 1:08 PM.
DeleteOP here - organic/medicinal
DeleteRockford U is scheduling phone interviews.
ReplyDeleteAnyone getting interviews/rejections from UCR (Riverside)?
ReplyDeleteThose of you who have given up hope, like me,: now what? What are you going to do? Stay a postdoc, find a job in industry, something else? Will your PI even allow you to stay a postdoc and try again next year?
ReplyDeleteI still have a year of fellowship left, so I will probably try again next Fall. I had a couple interviews but no offers. I'm feeling old though (33), so I'm definitely feeling pressured to get started in my career. I may just apply for industry positions this spring and see what happens.
DeleteTrying a second time isn't so bad if you came close the first time, but after 2, it's probably time to move on, unless you have done something truly extraordinary in the last year or have it coming out soon, or there are some extenuating circumstances (i.e. your advisor(s) only write one "this is a superstar" letter per year and next year "it's your turn").
DeleteIt's important to recognize what the numbers are. Tim Tebow didn't get to become an NFL QB despite it being his dream, because there are about 80 of those jobs in the entire world. So he went onto settling for being a highly paid commentator and getting engaged to Miss Universe.
Actually Tim Tebow was an NFL QB. He just didn't get tenure. He is also now a minor league baseball player- so maybe the answer is to go back to grad school in biology.
Delete@6:43 Lol, except I'd say data science.
DeleteThe weird part that I do not understand about Tebow is that he insisted on being an NFL QB, and not, say, an NFL fullback or an NFL tight end. I suppose that physical constraints had a role to play there, but still! (shrugs)
DeleteMaybe wide receiver?
DeleteProblem is, unless you're really good at a position, you're disposable, and even if you're really good at those positions, you're probably still expendable, while at quarterback, you could get along for awhile being mediocre if you're dependably so. In addition, you have more protection from losing your mind at quarterback than at other positions - being rich isn't worth as much to you if you have traumatic brain injuries (though that only implies that being in the NFL isn't a good idea for anyone). Even with the reduction in union power and pay potential, being in baseball is likely a better idea if you have a shot there.
It's a shame that Tebow can't pitch left-handed.
DeleteAnyone hear anything about the Memorial University analytical position?
ReplyDeleteAnyone heard about Troy Materials Chemistry?
ReplyDeleteI have not heard from Troy for their Materials Chemistry position yet.
DeleteRejection from Georgia Tech. States that "We will keep your file open, in the event that we
ReplyDeleteare able to revisit the applicant pool"... but I think that's just bluster, unless someone got a different version of the letter.
Shit, man.
I got the same letter
DeleteAs did I. Still, it was a kindly-written letter, and I appreciate that. I got some rejections that could only be described as brusque, so I like it when someone writes a nice rejection, even if the result is exactly the same.
DeleteI got the same letter as well it sounds, probably their generic rejection letter, but as Anon 1:08 says, it was by far the kindest and most encouraging letter I have received so far.
DeleteKind, but with everyone getting the same letter, how sincere is it? I wonder if they recycle the letter every year
DeleteFFS. I get the complaints about not hearing from the search committee after initial contact (valid). But to now say the letter wasn't "sincere" enough. Seriously?! Should the committee come and take you out for a coffee to let you down easy?
DeleteSending everyone a letter stating that they’re impressive and totally capable of being a PI at an R1 university, just not the right fit is the part where I was questioning sincerity. I think it’s too nice and, in a way, giving all applicants a participation trophy. But sure, coffee sounds great. Extra cream and sugar for my sensitive palette please.
DeleteMaybe when I'm in charge of a search committee I will try to tell people what quartile they were in. I'm sure that will go over great "You were in the 3rd quartile, good luck in your endeavors, but in our opinion you are no where close to being a PI at an R1 (150 applicants are ahead of you)."
Delete@9:52 AM: That is pretty harsh, but on some level it would be nice to know that I am not the only person that thinks I am wasting my time...
DeleteI got the exact same one...
ReplyDeletesomeone know further information about materials chemistry - University of Tennessee Knoxville?
ReplyDeleteThey did Skype interview on Jan 7. No update yet afterward.
Delete@5:16PM Do you know if that skype interview was for materials chemistry only or combining other two areas?
DeleteThe 7th was for other areas. They may have done materials that day also, but I can’t say for sure.
Deleteit was for others and as far as I know one may be associate.

ReplyDeleteAny updates from University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Elmhurst College all for TT organic chemistry.
ReplyDeleteElmhurst organic contacted about video interviews last week
DeleteDid anyone apply to both R1 and PUIs and how did you respond when asked where you applied?
ReplyDeleteI told them the truth. The PUI invited me anyway. I turned that one down due to already receiving R1 invites.
DeleteHonesty is a good policy. Many of us may come from an R1-type institution and unless we are 100% sure where we want to end up in our careers, it is common to apply broadly. In fact, I recommend to apply broadly. The question is whether or not we would be open to learning more about a PUI, given that we may lack the personal experience with it. It would be important to NOT make a PUI feel inferior to an R1 because the two types of institution may have completely different foci, so it would not be a fair comparison. From the 9 interviews I have had or will have, my break down is: 1 R1, 6 PUI, and 2 MS. I had to decline an offer from a PUI but only because the committee was adamant about wanting a final response very early in the search, even before I had finished scheduling my other interviews. This has nothing to do with whether or not it was a PUI or R1, but rather because of the inflexible "final response date." Although, I do think that pushing for an early response date is a recruitment tactic in and of itself...
DeleteSpeaking as someone on a PUI search committee- I can say that an interview sinks when we ask candidates “why a small liberal arts school” and their answer implies that we are their “safety” if they don’t get Harvard.
DeleteI second Anonymous Jan 21, 2019 at 6:48PM, or any R1 for that matter. Also speaking as someone on a PUI search committee.
DeleteLet me repeat what have been said many times:
Lots of PUIs are looking for a candidate that is an excellent instructor, who can perform a fair amount of research aiming to succeed in extramural "PUI focused" grant applications. Teaching (a lot with student evaluation that have weight) + Research (with time left on your hand) + Services (make your department and PUI happy), considering resources and research facilities constraint, is not a walk in the park for most of us on TT.
Just saying.
Thanks to all of you for the responses. My situation is kind of awkward. I've was aiming for a career at a PUI since I started grad school, and pursued various teaching opportunities to prepare for it. A year and a half ago I got a very competitive postdoc fellowship and my postdoc advisors encouraged me to apply to R1 schools, which I was open to, but I still feel that I would be a better fit for a PUI. I was planning on doing the bulk of the applications next year once my postdoc work is published, but I am submitting some applications this year (as a very desirable place currently has an open position). I think I may have a chance of getting an interview at this desirable place, but I already half-heartedly submitted a few R1 applications a few months ago, and I hope that doesn't make it look like I'm looking for a backup. If I get an interview at this desirable PUI, I want to be able to convey that PUI was my career goal all along, despite having applied (unsuccessfully) to R1s. Can any of you provide advice for this, please? Thank you.
DeleteFirst general suggestion: Your CV, cover letter and other required documents submitted to a PUI should all start with your teaching skills based on all the activities that you took part in. Even better if you had initiative and you were able to adjunct somewhere, taught lectures or instructed lab during your PhD and Post-Doc. You will get points if you took part in extra teaching curriculum or attended seminars/lectures on teaching and ect...be succinct but clear about your passion (teaching to undergrad).
DeleteNow about your research interest: Once you have convinced the search committee about your teaching skills, that you will be an awesome helpful/resourceful colleague, that you did your homework on that particular PUI and you understand all the positive of being there (you read as much as you can on the PUI and department), how they will benefit to have you, they should be interested to hear about your research interests, again as long as your interests are student centered. It is not about you anymore, but about the undergrad. When discussing about what you have done in R1, then put that in perspective about how it will benefit the undergrad and the the depart, be student centered, it is not about you anymore.
Make it clear how your research will be of interest to undergrad (career, education, personal growth,...), how your research will be feasible despite the undergrad time constrained, the availability of equipment, funding and other resources at the PUI of interest. How your research project will lead to at minimum one publication per two years in a peer reviewed journal (taking in account your teaching load). Will you be able to get extramural funding specific for PUI ?
Take home message: In my opinion and limited experience as TT assist Prof in a PUI, it is exciting and refreshing to have colleges who have ambitious research projects as long as they don't take over the teaching, they are student centered, viable in a PUI system, can lead to peer reviewed publications, avoiding jealousy among faculty (you will be a team player) and that you will bring the necessary funding to do so if needed.
I stop here, there was my lunch break !
It is only my narrow perspective and results may vary from one PUI to another one, from one department to another one.
Check the following: https://www.cur.org/who/governance/divisions/chemistry/
Is it usual for a school to request a background check before an on-site interview.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it is state law. But if it's a private school, that's something else.
DeleteSo quiet for medicinal chemistry positions. Maybe it is time to find a job in pharmaceutical companies.
ReplyDeleteRutgers University reopened its med chem position. What does that mean? All the applicants from last July are not qualified?
ReplyDeleteMore than likely they had a first choice and offered and then they declined. Once an offer has been declined, and if there wasn't a clear second choice, then they move to reopen the position. I do not know if this is what happened, just speculation. Not qualified, not a good fit, etc. are (mostly) subjective and vary greatly between departments (probably an obvious statement).
DeleteAnyone hear from U New Orleans (materials) after video interviews?
ReplyDeleteI’ve gone on a few interviews now but I’m sitting around hearing rumors about other people’s offers and it’s so demoralizing. The effort of the onsites is so exhausting and it could all be for nothing...
ReplyDeleteI'm in the same boat. I'm trying to be satisfied that I've done the best I could. Easier said than done, but it's a tough process and there are a lot of factors.
DeleteI'm in the same boat. But, someone thought your ideas and cv were good enough to spend hundreds of dollars to fly you out and hours of their time talking to you. It's an amazing opportunity even if it doesn't end up with a job.
DeleteYeah! Obviously it's still hard, but that's a good way to look at it. Let's keep our heads up!
DeleteThings are even worse about on sites when you spend a lot of your time and energy preparing for that, and then, you never hear again from the committee when the outcome is not positive. Basically they expect that you to guess if they hired somebody or not. For all on sites that I have gone so far, I could figure out that was not the selected candidate only through this forum. No email from the search committee nor from the HR.
DeleteIt is not that hard to email 3 to 5 people saying that they found a better fit.
I see that as huge lack of respect from the search committee and institution to the candidates.
Why there people are so silent after interviews? Why don't they inform candidates what is going on honestly? Why?
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure I see many people share the positions they've accepted on the public circle jerk that is Twitter.
DeleteCivility, please.
DeleteSadly when you google 'civil circle jerk' nothing comes up :(
DeleteMaybe we can try mechanical or chemical? /s

ReplyDeleteAny news for engineering positions (chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, etc)?
ReplyDeletePenn MSE has interviews scheduled: https://mse.seas.upenn.edu/
DeleteOn-site interview decisions for nearly all chemical engineering schools have pretty much been made by this point. I am not waiting for any other schools.
DeleteFrom the inbox: "SUNY New Paltz has hired a biochemist for their open position (not me, I got a rejection email today)"
ReplyDeleteSUNY Oneonta is conducting phone interview for the Org Chem position this week. Offered was accepted for the Phys Chem/Anal Chem position, also at SUNY Oneonta.
ReplyDeleteThat would be great if the University could let the candidates know the search was finished, instead of having to rely on Chemjobber.
DeleteGeneral question: I recently found out that many of my letters from one person were not sent. More absent minded professor than malicious. I just recently paid for interfolio so I could forward them myself. Wondering if a school would not bother to read an application if it was missing a requested letter? Wondering as several have noted its absence and asked for the missing one.
ReplyDeleteIn my experience if they are interested enough they will reach out (either to you or directly to that professor) to get the letter. One letter didn't go through for a couple of my applications due to technical problems and I got emails asking if I could follow up to have that particular letter resent ASAP.
DeleteI had several schools where I had a phone interview still missing letters, and one that scheduled a campus interview when I was still down a letter- they just asked me to get it in before the visit.
DeleteSame as Anonymous January 23, 2019 at 7:23 PM happened to me

ReplyDeleteUCI has posted a couple materials seminars under "special seminar", but they seem senior. I wonder if they changed the Open/Inorg/Soft materials search to a senior search as well, or it could just be two random seminars not connected. Just trying to read the tea leaves...
ReplyDeleteSpecial seminars can also be paid for by random discretionary funds that a PI has. A nice drinking vacation where all you have to do is give the talk. Especially if you live in the polar vortex and the trip is down to Irvine
DeleteSouthern Methodist University has filled the position in Theoretical Chemistry, according to a recent email.
ReplyDeleteany news about Materials chemistry from Western Michigan?
ReplyDeleteAnyone know anything about the position(s) at Thomas Jefferson University? It seems a little odd to have one advertisement for multiple positions that are TT and non-TT. Is the search real or the result of redistributing people from the recent merger?
ReplyDeleteThe University of Montana Western is setting up Skype interviews for their general/organic chemistry professor position.
ReplyDeleteSan Jose State U (phys/org/anal) has sent out rejections via email
ReplyDeleteAfter all on-site interviews are done, how long does it usually take for a department to extend an offer? Are the other candidates typically notified of their status, or do they generally wait until the first candidate accepts/declines the offer?
ReplyDeleteThe department will likely meet and discuss their top candidate within one week of the final on-site interview. The top candidate will be notified of the offer very soon after the faculty have made their decision. The other candidates will hear nothing until the offer has been accepted or declined. If the offer is declined, they can move to their next candidate. When I received an offer, I contacted all of the department chairs from the schools I visited to let them know. Only then did they open up about the status of their offers and what their plan was.
DeleteSome departments will notify you if you are the second choice candidate - at least this has been my experience...
Delete@3:21- how blunt (or subtle) have those notifications been? Explicitly say you are second choice or "ask to be kept up to date" right after an offer goes out?
Delete3:21 here - I've had both experiences. I've been told explicitly that I was the second choice for a position but also more subtlely that I may still be in contention
DeleteThe acceptance of an offer can actually take some time if there are some negotiations involved. I know when we had a search, it took nearly 1 month to actually get the candidate to accept. Some of that was due to people being out/traveling and some due to quite a bit of back-and-forth. So, if you are a second/third "choice", and if you were earlier in the on-site process, it could very easily be a couple months. I don't think there are any departments/companies that contact people during the process and say, "oh, hey, we are waiting on someone else to make finish their negotiations and if it falls through, we'll get back with you". It sucks, but the process isn't quick as all offers are fluid with many people that have to "sign off" on any new change.
DeleteA couple of places I interviewed at finished a couple weeks ago and I haven't heard anything. So I must not be the number one candidate. Bleh

DeleteAny news on:
ReplyDeleteUniversity Illinois Chicago (Chem Ed)
Utah Valley University
SUNY Old Westbury
Metro State (Chem Ed)
Humboldt State
or
Rowan U (Materials)?
Humboldt State has finished Skype interviews two weeks ago. Rowan University is conducting on-site interviews. And on December thread somebody said that SUNY Old Westbury was conducting phone interview that time.
DeleteSUNY Old Westbury position is filled.
DeleteThat is what happens when institutions do not bother notifying the candidates excluded from the process.
DeleteThe positions are filled, and candidates never know whether they should have hope or not. Institutions, please be more mindful to the candidates. They spent time composing their application documents the best they could. Most time they have a family to support too, they need to know as soon as possible to plan their future.
So, if a position was filled please notify ALL the candidates who applied (not only the ones that made on campus interview), so they can move on with their search and lives.
Also, do not give the excuse that is impossible, there are many automatic email systems that may work for those types of situation.
But then what about those that aren't satisfied because the letter wasn't personal enough (see above).
DeleteI think the people above have got to be kidding...they were probably just being dramatic to commiserate with one another...
DeleteOP here. A simple note on the website would be helpful as an alternative to emails. Many don't even note they have a search going. But I know outdated websites are still in vogue in academia...

ReplyDeleteSame here. Had a video interview a few weeks ago but no news since.
DeleteThanks for the info. So we both still can have hope, I suppose. In general, they have taken a long time in between the steps.
DeleteUnfortunately, they scheduled on-sites already.
DeleteAnything about a position in theoretical chemistry at Carnegie Mellon?
ReplyDeletePhone/skype interview in early December. No follow up since then. Saw a few special seminars titled "theoretical biophysics." Perhaps they went that way.
