Rejection from UT Austin.
ReplyDeleteYikes - the rejections are really rolling in now!
ReplyDeleteIts way better than getting nothing.
DeleteSecond rejection received from Ursinus (first one received back in November). I get it, I get it!
ReplyDeleteRejection from Humboldt State.
ReplyDeleteFor the biophysical chemists, I got a rejection from MSKCC's Structural Biology Program.
ReplyDeleteAnyone received any news of offers in Northeastern's Chemistry dept?
ReplyDeleteHas anyone else noticed that correspondence relating to interview/onsite visit offers/next steps seem to come after hours and on weekends while rejections seem to come between M-F 9-5?
ReplyDeleteJust a little unscientific analysis I am doing which has helped me stress less during the workday, but it could just me be.
I just got a rejection email from Montclair State University (bio-analytical chemistry). I did an on-site there in December.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone heard from UCF Chemistry for the organic chemistry position? Are they arranging phone/skype interviews?
ReplyDeleteHas anyone heard from Clark Atalanta University for the Materials chemistry position? Are they arranging phone/skype interviews?
ReplyDeleteI have not heard from CAU after confirmation of their receiving my application...
DeleteSame here. This university looks a little weird.
ReplyDeleteUniversity of Tampa is scheduling on sites.
ReplyDeleteWhen an original TT advertisement reopens and you were interviewed before they reopened the position but have not been outright rejected, does this mean that you are no longer under serious consideration? I don’t understand the point of reopening a position later in the season and not keeping applicants informed (especially a candidate that has been interviewed).
ReplyDeleteI had a phone interview for a TT position in Feb. Later that week the position was reposted in multiple places. That next week I was invited for on-site.
DeletePeople explained to me sometimes it's a requirement of the state or institution, but can depend on the school. Good luck!
I think I replied to the original post by Anon 5:23 PM, when his/her situation first came up.
DeleteWhat ended up happening in my case is the job was reposted for a couple of days, then closed, then a week or so later I got a rejection email as another candidate was hired. So I think they had to have the posting be in an “active” state in order to make the offer. YMMV
OP here, thanks for the responses. It seems for this specific institution, there may be a lack of applicants, although I am not certain.
DeleteSometimes the openings have a time limit and they have to "re-open" the search even though it is simply a continuation.
DeleteHas anyone heard from Adelphi U or Hofstra U, two Long Island schools with p-chem openings?
ReplyDeleteI think Adelphi scheduled phone interviews way back ago, by December. Right after their priority date. I suppose that by this time the search is already done and somebody has accepted the position. I did not apply to Hofstra, but I remember they were one of the last schools to open a PChem position (somewhere around mid-January). Anohter NY school that opened very late was Manhattan College, which I have never heard anything yet.
DeleteHofstra is conducting phone interviews. Adelphi position was filled in December
DeleteRejection from Iowa... again.
ReplyDeletesamesies.
DeleteSpelman College is scheduling interviews.
ReplyDelete! I wonder if not getting a rejection letter from them back when they were sent out is a good sign.. May I ask if you checked your application to see if they asked for recommendation letters from your references? Mine still says not requested.
DeleteI just checked and my application says they solicited letters at the end of October.
DeleteSo much for that then. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteA perfectly worded rejection from Wake Forest University (theory): "In light of the strength of the applicant pool, we decided not to proceed with your candidacy."
ReplyDeleteAt my institution they extended an offer but in light of the strength of the applicant pool they should not have proceeded.
DeleteAnyone hear from the Air Force Academy?
ReplyDeleteRejection from Air Force Academy :(
DeleteIndiana State pulled their payline after I interviewed :(
ReplyDeletePrairie View A&M University posted for hiring Tenure-Track/Analytical Chemistry; looks like this university posted similar position for many years.
ReplyDeleteRejection Univeristy Utah analytical.
ReplyDeleteDid Wichita state send out offer for the inorganic chem?
ReplyDeleteNorth Carolina A&T is scheduling Skype interviews.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone heard from UMKC Materials after onsites?
ReplyDeleteRejection from Harvard.
ReplyDeleteAfter an on-site?
DeleteNo, plain rejection without any prior interactions.
DeleteDoes anyone have some good resources for structure/prepping for a chalk talk?
ReplyDeleteRejection (after on-site) from SD Mines. Anybody know who they hired?
ReplyDeleteIt's really funny to get the automated rejection email from a place you actually turned down an offer from, when they hire someone else 2 months later!
DeleteAny further information from University of Texas Rio Grande Valley for materials chemistry?
ReplyDeleteCSU Fullerton has sent out a rejection
ReplyDeleteRejection from Auburn, says the position has been filled.
ReplyDeleteRejection from Texas A&M (theory): position has been filled.
ReplyDeleteRejection from U Tampa (organic) after an onsite. Hope they found someone good!
ReplyDeleteHas anyone heard anything from the Canadian schools such as York (Environmental), Guelph (Biological position), or Memorial University (Analytical)?
ReplyDeleteYork interviewed in Jan so they have likely made an offer by now. Haven't heard anything about the other two but as far as other Canadian schools, Queens (phys. org.) has made an offer, UVIC (materials) has sent rejection letters, Western (polymer) has contacted candidates for interviews, UofT (polymer) has interviewed in dec. and I have heard they concluded their search.
DeleteGuelph is conducting on sites
DeleteMemorial was scheduling for on-site interviews from late Feb/early March.
DeleteUniversity of British Columbia (Vancouver) Assistant Professor in Environmental Chemistry position has been filled.
ReplyDeleteWhat is a "term assistant professor"?
ReplyDeleteNot totally sure but I imagine that would be a multi-year renewable contract with possible permanent employment but without the potential for tenure.
DeleteI'm not sure how widespread this is in other fields or in non-academic job searches, but I'm pretty disappointed in how many places still haven't sent notifications to unsuccessful applicants for faculty positions. I'd say I haven't heard anything from at least half of the schools I applied to.
ReplyDeleteFor a job that requires 60+ hour workweeks, <10% funding paylines, huge teaching loads, endless bureaucracy, no pension, and not-great pay, I'm surprised we want these jobs at all. But a lot of us do. There's something wrong with us.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya there- that's why I've ditched the academic slough and gone on the industry track. Lotsa jobs for lotsa better pay and, quite likely, less hours sunk in at the workplace.
DeleteU Wisconsin Madison Food Chemistry has sent out rejections/notified the shortlist.
ReplyDeleteAnyone heard further information from University of Texas Rio Grande Valley for materials chemistry after the zoom interview?
ReplyDeleteI hate to keep harping on this, but has anyone heard from Fordham University regarding their physical chemistry position? It's been total radio silence as far as I can tell.
ReplyDeleteRejection from Florida State (analytical) position has been filled.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLkLwIA5mCI
DeleteRejection from Indiana University of Pennsylvania
ReplyDeleteAre there any other news about U of Guelph than biological position? They are hiring three (biological, NMR and theoretical). In this case, one search committee handles everything or three goes independently? If only biological position is being conducted onsite, is there still a chance for other positions?
ReplyDeleteAs far as I am aware, they have only interviewed 1 person for the theoretical position (as per their website?) though I could be wrong.
DeleteWhere is the website?
DeleteNow that we are nearing the end of this season, is there any way we can quantify the number of people who applied for these positions versus the number of people that ultimately received offers across the country? This may be useful information for future applicants.
ReplyDeleteThis would be really interesting to see
DeleteReliably? The only way to do that would be to contact the school and ask, I think. Maybe I'm wrong.
DeleteYou're probably right, although I was thinking at a more global level. With the "Chemistry Bumper Cars" it should be easy to estimate how many positions were filled. Essentially, I'm interest to know how many other people tried to get a faculty job this cycle but did not get one.
DeleteChemistry Bumper Cars only gets about 200 entries max. I suspect it's at 50-75% for PhD-granting institutions, and >33% for PUIs.
DeleteMakes sense with the 500-600 job postings per year. Is there any data on how many searches fail/positions go unfilled per year?
DeleteNot that I'm aware of.
DeleteThat should be "I suspect it's at 50-75% for PhD-granting institutions, and < 33% for PUIs." up there... sigh.
DeleteI'm betting it's way less than 33% for PUIs. For the past couple of years, I'd put it at 10% or less.
DeleteMaybe it's just me, but it seems like Bumper Cars is moving more slowly this year than previous years. I wonder if people are just being more cautious about disclosing something before it's official, or if this is actually a slow hiring year. From my limited perspective, many R1 searches have not yet announced new hires.
DeleteCould also be that it's on a different site so less people know where to post?
DeleteI know from my correspondence with faculty that all places that I interviewed have made offers (or chose not to make an offer), but I don't think any of them have been officially announced.
DeleteUniversity of Tampa (Organic) has canceled its search.
ReplyDeleteWomp womp.
I saw on Indeed that they just posted a Visiting Assistant Professor position for Organic.
DeleteMakes sense. Seems they are overloaded there (lots of contact hours and research). It didn't seem like they could go without another body for another year and keep class sizes low.
DeleteRejection from UMD Duluth materials after on-site
ReplyDeleteAny news from UMKC Materials?
ReplyDeleteSpoke to the admin assistant, seems the search is slow due to the merging of the departments (Chem into SBS). Says no one has been notified yet after onsites.
DeleteManhattan College (open) is scheduling phone interviews.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing I am late in their search as its been a few months and they asked if I was free for a very specific time slot.
Good to know. I guess they didn't like me enough...
DeleteFWIW they said they are wrapping up the phones this week, pausing for easter and looking to do onsites in early May.
DeleteI also had NO idea there were two searches open. I supposedly applied to the physical position, and there is an environmental as well. I coudn't tell if they were the same committees.
Manhattan College is scheduling onsites for the Environmental position for late April
DeleteIt is weird to hear they are still doing phone interviews. Because I have heard there are people that have already gone for the campus interview with them. If they are doing phone simultaneously to the campus interviews, it seems that it will take kind a long time for this search to have a conclusion.
ReplyDeleteUCF is Skyping this week.
ReplyDeleteFor Organic position?
DeleteI was told Delaware state send out the offer.
ReplyDeleteOrg or inorg?
DeleteInorganic
DeleteJust got a real life rejection letter from U Chicago! I had completely forgotten that I had applied to them.
ReplyDeleteMe too! Although I'm obviously disappointed I didn't get a position, I think this was a nice that they sent a physical letter with my name (not simply "Dear applicant").
DeleteSame! And they at least spelled my name right, which I appreciate.
Deletenice they sent something... last year they didn't even let on-site interviews know their status in the end
DeleteTexas Rio Grande has closed the Materials position and will not be filling it at this time.
ReplyDeleteI guess this the third time since 2016; weird.
DeleteHave you been to the Valley? The place isn't for everyone.
DeleteYes, but just for travel and I think it's better than have no job
DeleteUtah Valley Uni. Is sending out rejections
ReplyDeleteAnybody hear anything from Wichita or Virginia Commonwealth?
ReplyDeleteI know they filled the analytical position. Not sure about the others.
DeleteRejection from Boston College (theory).
ReplyDeletePhysical Chemistry position at Baylor has been filled.
ReplyDeleteAnybody hear anything from Clark Atlanta University after the zoom interview?
ReplyDeleteUniversity of Denver informed me this morning that they have elected to cancel their search. Or, as the email put it: "At this time, it has been determined to not move forward with filling the Assistant Professor, Organic Chemistry (000267) position"
ReplyDeleteSame thing here. Guess that explains why we all got radio silence after our interviews. What a mess.
DeleteWas that after on-site? I had a similar situation after an on-site somewhere, and it's a little tough to hear that they would rather hire nobody than me. Oh well, I did the best I could!
DeleteI've heard that the problem in some of these situations is that the faculty can't agree on who they should hire, so the only compromise is to hire nobody. It's really unfortunate because it is such a big waste of time and resources, and it's disrespectful to the candidates.
DeleteWait for the corresponding visiting position to post. It's the icing on the cake.
DeleteOP Here - didn't even get interviewed, so I wasn't expecting to get hired, but I think it's equally possible that they couldn't agree on who to hire or the funding line fell through.
DeleteI understand that it is frustrating to have a search end without anyone being hired, but how, exactly, is it disrespectful to the candidates? The process is not easy and there are many voices in the process (faculty). If they cannot come to a consensus on whom to hire, then it is best to not hire someone. That stuff happens, it's not disrespectful unless the brought people out with absolutely no intention of hiring someone - but that's not going to happen due to the expense (both in time and money). So, somethings happen that cannot be helped, but it's far from disrespectful.
DeleteClearly having a hiring process where no one is hired is not a great outcome for anyone, but why does it seem to happen so frequently? Is there anything we can do to improve the faculty hiring process?
DeleteI almost want a residency-matching-like system...
Has anyone applied / heard from Lise Meitner Group Leader position at Max Planck?
ReplyDeleteRejection from UNR after phone.
ReplyDeleteWhich search?
DeletePolymer
DeleteRejection from California Institute of Technology
ReplyDeleteAnything from Dartmouth (theoretical molecular science)?
ReplyDeleteSpelman is sending out extra rejections today! I got my first one in January.
ReplyDeleteAnybody hear anything from Clark Atlanta University after the zoom interview?
ReplyDeleteAny update on delaware organic position?
ReplyDeletenothing heard on my end after the onsite (late march)
DeleteI was told that interviews are both organic and inorganic are running in parallel and decision will be made by end of April.
Deleteis there further information from delaware state for organic position?
DeleteNo update.....No response
DeleteHas offer being made on after high point med chem onsite interview?
ReplyDeleteHas anybody received any offer from Manhattan College for their PChem position after the campus interview? I suppose that by this time all the candidates were interviewed.
ReplyDeleteI was speaking to them about another search and it was brought up that decisions likely have to be made before the end of the term next week. With that said, everyone is in the midst of finals so it might not be till the end of next week.
DeleteRejection from Oregon State. Always funny to get them after Marshall has the bumpercars update.
ReplyDeleteHas offer being made from Clark Atlanta University for the materials chem?
ReplyDeleteAny update on delaware organic position?
ReplyDeletenothing over here yet. My guess is they waited till the end of the semester to finish things up and now they are busy with other work. Seems the semester ends May 6th. would probably hear on or around then.
DeleteI think maybe they made an offer to other people; I do not get any message from them.
DeleteI think three people did onsites for the org position and it seems we are all on here... I could be wrong.
DeleteI guess you are right.
DeleteI just withdrew from the search so good luck!
DeleteI hope you got the position you wished for. I am not sure if its still open.
DeleteFWIW the email I got back from the Chair seems to imply it may be. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya.
Deletesomeone got the offer for the organic position? I can't imagine they work so slow.
DeleteNot sure as what could be the reason but no response from chair/search committee either.
DeleteHow about now guys? looks like DSU possibly cancel the searching.
DeleteI guess. But at they should have audacity to say it. They don't have any organic faculty on their roster so how they gonna teach organic courses to their students.
DeleteSomeone got the offer or is negotiating now for the Organic Chem position? Looks like the Inorganic Chem searching has been finalized.
DeleteNot from here and no response from the them! Looks like these guys not professional!
DeleteManhattan College (environmental chem) has made an offer
ReplyDeleteManhattan College (PChem) has made an offer as well.
ReplyDeleteAny places still ongoing?
ReplyDeleteFWIW: I have yet to hear from:
DeleteUniversity of New Haven
U Hartsford
Thomas Jefferson University
or final words from:
Sacramento State
University of New Orleans
UMKC Materials
Rockford U
U. Illinois Chicago (Chem Ed)
Del State (Organic)
But I've given up on all of those
Visting positions that are still open (to my knowledge):
Adelphi
Yeshiva
Vassar
Coast Guard Academy
UIC named their chem ed hire on their website.
Deletehttps://chem.uic.edu/news-stories/new-faculty-minjung-ryu/
The UIC hire is telling about the future of chemistry. There are no jobs doing chemistry any longer, consequently you sell post-modern fluff. Diversity in science-learning settings? It's all very nice but how can you teach chemistry if the kids graduate high school and still can't do 8th-grade algebra? But to construct construct identities of transnational students you don't need math. Problem solved.
Delete@Anon May 9 12:59 PM:
DeleteI'm sorry, that's just nonsense. This was specifically a Chemistry Education hire. This hiring season had ~500 positions, and I don't think I've seen even a single other "diversity" related one - they're all perfectly regular chemistry PI positions. I have plenty of criticism about academic hiring in chemistry, and I'm far from a fan of the current fixation on "diversity", but to take this one specific hire and claim "There are no jobs doing chemistry any longer" is bunk.
@ Anon May 9 12:59 PM: I meant to say that the recent hire at UIC used to be an industrial chemist who switched to Chem.Ed. after she settled in the US.
DeleteThe Coast Guard Academy has sent out an offer that was rejected. (pretty competitive offer tho for a part time position)
Delete@ Anon on 5/8 @ 9:50 who had the list of schools - when you say you have yet to hear from Thomas Jefferson University, do you mean you received no contact? I had an onsite there in March and they told me their goal was to be all wrapped up by mid-April. They were hiring 3 tenure lines. If you look at their Fall course schedule, 90% of their gen chem and orgo sections are listed as TBA - they need lots of bodies and were also looking for non-tenure.
DeleteAnon 9:50 here, I had applied back in January but never heard anything after that. They must have moved on without me. Thanks for posting though. Good luck.
DeleteWell, I might need some luck. I was probably brought in just because I didn't require travel expenses. I feel like something a little funny is going on there.
Delete^^ presuming that the only thing holding students back from being a scientist is a difficulty with algebra.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I care more if a student can engage with core ideas and demonstrate that knowledge through science & engineering practices than this obsession with math as proxy for "rigor." Math is not and should not be the end-all-be-all of education in chemistry.
Despite that priority, that doesn't mean we cannot and should not value research that addresses the issues of identity and culture; these are huge influences on the classroom, the curriculum, and educational policy.
Haverford just posted an open position for a 1-year visiting asst prof.
ReplyDeleteAny words from three Guelph positions?
ReplyDeleteRejection from Colorado School of Mines
ReplyDeleteRejection from Wisconsin Madison Food Chemistry
ReplyDeleteRejection from UNLV that I applied to in 2017 (I believe they kept rolling over applications??)... I've been TT at another University now for almost a year lol
ReplyDeleteWell, that's fun!
DeletePalm Beach State College has canceled their search for chemistry faculty.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say thank you to CJ and Andrew, along with everyone who shared their experiences and information over the past year. It was incredibly helpful, and though I am looking forward to not checking this page daily, I will miss it and refer others to it! Hope everyone has a good summer and a great next year.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind words. I really appreciate it.
Deleteis there further information from Atlanta Clark University?
ReplyDeleteThe Dean from UMKC is reaching out about the Materials Chem position
ReplyDeleteIt's rumored that the Inorganic Chem position still not offered from Delaware State. The first candidate possibly declined the offer(?); who know more about the hiring from the Delaware state?
ReplyDeleteThis is strange as I was told that both inorganic and organic position has been offered.
DeletePossibly the first candidate declined the offer then move to the second place, or plan to cancel the searching, or a long time negotiating. But I just wondering is there enough time for starting the fall semester if still have no a final decision.
DeleteCouldn't help but note that both the Org/Inorg posts are on the 2020 search for DSU...
DeleteFWIW: Rejection received from UW Tacoma (Organic) and Yeshiva U has hired their visiting professor
ReplyDeleteU of Colorado cancelled the search.
ReplyDeleteI heard from grapevine that might be related to their recent departmental separation between chemistry and biochemistry.
DeleteOregon State cancelled the search.
ReplyDelete
