There's a great thing about the ACS not allowing you to update your name without a huge hassle...they call me every now and then wanting to pester me to re-instate my membership. I immediately know it's them calling because they are the only ones who ask me, "Hello, may I speak to Ms. *Maiden Name*?" (My name changed 12 years ago.)
ReplyDeleteOn blogging: I have a draft of a first piece, and several topics I've tasked myself to write about over the summer. Would it be more fruitful to make my own blogspot or wordpress? or try to solicit other sites to publish the pieces?
ReplyDeleteI'm struggling to understand how the minor inconvenience of updating your title on a website could turn into an attack on the assumed lack of diversity at ACS. Whether or not ACS staff have experienced name changes (I'm certain many have), more than likely the hardships they did or did not face with changing their names understandably would not be made into a memo for the IT staff who set up their website... or the company outsourced by ACS to set up their website. The writers lack of sending any request to customer service in order to change her name would not have helped bring this to their attention, so it is hardly fair for her to spring such a passive aggressive letter on them after 5 years of inactivity, and publish it on twitter and her blog in the clear attempt to fan the flames. While it is unfair to assume ACS are just a bunch of white men who don't understand name changes, it's very safe to assume ACS don't check in on us every year to make sure we haven't changed our names or titles. Also, the writer appropriating the heated issue of diversity, and the hardships that go with it, as a means to put "Dr." on her mail is insulting to anyone struggling with real inequality. I'm sure the mailman will be very impressed Dr. Haas...
