Duquesne University has filled their position and sent rejection letters.
ReplyDeleteAny news from CSUMB?
ReplyDeleteGot a rejection from CSUMB today.
DeletePurdue QIS has scheduled phone interviews.
ReplyDeleteAny news from NYU?
ReplyDeleteNew Jersey Institute of Technology is scheduling skype interviews...
ReplyDeleteWas the letter ever requested?
DeleteI don't know if they requested a letter...
DeleteI will have to ask our admin assistant.
They did not request the letter at this stage.
DeleteNew opening: Harvard CCB Department Chair.
ReplyDeleteHahaha I hate LOL, but I actually just laughed out loud.
DeleteHaha Literally LOL too, they are moving fast
DeleteImmediate start date. Funding, in part, from Thousand Talents.
Delete"Applicants will be expected to develop a world-renowned research program and obtain their own external funding. But please note that proper reporting of this funding is required."
DeleteHahaha
DeleteI was wondering if any other experimental chemists at small PUI's would be willing to share their experience of building up their research lab? One of the universities I interviewed with gives 20k startup. Do you have any tipps on how to build a lab with that amount?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Synthetic organic and started at the same time as a synthetic inorganic coworker. 20k would be fine for me, but my coworker needed a glovebox which ate up almost all of their startup (and cost more than 20k). I'd start with big ticket items (depending on what else is available to you and your projects): rotovap, oven, fridge/freezer, glovebox, Schlenk line, high vacuum pump, analytical balance, fancy stirplates with thermocouple, glassware, nmr tubes/solvents. Then I'd look at whether the school has a central stockroom you can get common items from such as solvents and gloves. Last would be the chemicals you need for your specific project because you can't do anything with the chemicals without the infrastructure.
Deleteany experience with buying used equipment? E.g. ovens/scales?
DeleteHi there, started as a TT prof at a smaller (4500 student) PUI last year.
DeleteWe were given 12k, but surprisingly, access to the departmental budget for chemicals, gloves, glassware and such so its actually probably upwards of 16k.
The department has functioning GCs, LCs, NMR (60 MHz), UV-VISs and such
I spent my money on Lab balances that were my own (micro and gram scale), centrifuge, rotovap, viscometer, essentially stuff I can't have other people touching (too often) and stuff the department was missing. It was much easier to have line items approved if there already wasn't one in the building (they wanted me to use a crusty rotovap and I was like no thanks). Our school also has a lot of low income students so I built in things like ACS student membership for a few years for a few students to cover that expense (which doesn't seem like much but can be) especially because the department requires a presentation from them at the undergrad conference in the spring.
Thanks, that's very helpful! Did not think about the ACS membership for students, that's a good idea!
DeleteYou can also check to see if your local ACS section has funding for students to attend conferences. Ours will pay their ACS membership and their conference registration fee!
Delete4:08 pm here - I could not purchase used lab equipment because of purchase order/quotation requirements as well as each vendor has to be on the state-approved list. I do know of others who have had success doing it from other universities.
DeleteWhat area? Organic, inorg, p-chem, analytical, or biochem?
ReplyDeleteinorganic
DeleteHow common is it to get an offer a couple of months after an interview? I assume that a small number of candidates get many of the offers which holds up many of the universities from making more offers. Is it the case that most offers that are ultimately accepted are given much later?
ReplyDeleteAlternatively, does anyone have a sense for the frequency with which top 40 R1 schools make second or third offers after their first choices go elsewhere?
I can't speak for all schools, but know/have heard that many top R1 schools will not make offers down the list if their top choice declines. Instead they just reopen a search the following year.
DeleteIt might be a couple of months. Mine worked out that way (last interview mid December, my offer mid February) as the people who were initially offered the position ended up declining, much to my delight and good fortune. If you've had a few interviews, hang in there and hope.
DeleteNext year we will try a ChemE specific open thread! For now, here's what I know (and/or summarized from previous thread) -
ReplyDeleteStony Brook - finalized candidates
UCLA - finalized candidates
UCI - finalized candidates
UT Austin - seminars posted
UPenn - seminars posted
UMichigan - seminars posted
U Florida - finalized candidates
Penn State - seminars posted
Rutgers - finalized candidates
UMBC - finalized candidates
Georgia Tech - seminars posted
Agree. Thanks for the info. Any news from the following?
DeleteYale;
John Hopkins;
Connecticut;
Auburn;
South Carolina;
Tennessee;
Arkansas
Or Drexel?
DeleteA ChemE-specific thread would be very useful! Thanks for the update.
DeleteTennessee has schedule onsite, Arkansas has scheduled skype...
DeleteAre they all ChemE positions?
DeleteI believe today is the deadline for Johns Hopkins, and I haven't heard anything otherwise. They started their search late relative to most other schools.
DeleteRejection from Augustana.
ReplyDeleteAs the process moves forward and plans are forced to change, do people have suggested places to watch for visiting or term faculty positions beyond the usual places like Chronicle of Higher Ed, Inside Higher Ed, and HigherEdJobs?
ReplyDeleteHas anyone heard from U Chicago PME? They seem gung-ho about hiring (6 asst profs last year), but I don't know anyone who's heard from them this year.
ReplyDeleteIn the previous thread,

On-sites have been scheduled"
Any news from Southern Illinois university Edwardsville-chemistry?
ReplyDeleteQueens College is setting up Skype interviews for its computational chemistry position.
ReplyDeleteAnyone heard anything from the University of Calgary?
ReplyDeleteHas anyone heard anything about Notre Dame's Analytical position?
ReplyDeleteIt would appear that they have seminars up
DeleteI know someone who had an on-site there in December
DeleteMontana State has filled their computational chemistry position.
ReplyDeleteAny news from University of Delaware or LSU?
ReplyDeleteDelaware has scheduled onsites for Biopharmaceutical search
DeleteAny vague news from NYU and Scripps??
ReplyDeleteI was invited for a second visit to Scripps FL. I know Scripps CA made their offer as well. Both are for the Chemistry positions.
DeleteThanks for the info, and congratulations to you!
DeleteAny update on New Mexico State U and Old Dominion U after video interviews?
ReplyDeleteNMSU has scheduled on-sites already. I just had a phone interview last week with Old Dominion U and they said two weeks or so before they would let people know.
DeleteThanks for your notes. Let me know if you receive further update from ODU.
DeleteAny news from these universities?
ReplyDeleteSouthern Illinois University Carbondale
University of California, Davis
The University of Texas at Dallas
Thanks!
SIUC is just finishing up on-sites now so probably nothing for a while. I think same with UC Davis. No idea about UT Dallas
DeleteWhen you send an updated CV to the search chair, if she/he responds like, "I will make sure other search members consider your updated CV," it means they already moved on to the next level and you are not on it in most of my experiences.
ReplyDeleteIn my case I got an almost identical response, and then a phone interview and an on-site after. Probably highly dependent on the situation.
DeleteJust curious... what are you updating on your CV that you resend to the search chair?
Delete@10:13 AM New publications.
DeleteAhh, congrats on the pubs and good luck on the job search!
Delete@11:16 AM Exactly!!!
DeleteJust curious... what are you updating on your CV that you resend to the search chair?
ReplyDelete@10:09 AM invited talks.
ReplyDeleteGotta make sure they know where you are interviewing!
Deleteare you really putting your interview talks under invited talks? I always found that to be CV padding. Am i wrong?
DeleteIt is definitely fine to include interview talks as invited talks. Scoring an interview is an accomplishment, and it isn't really any different from when they bring anyone else through for a seminar.
DeleteHowever, I'm not pinging the search chairs with CV updates for that, seems like it might rub some people the wrong way.
@9:23 PM. I agree. Interview talks in chemistry is prestigious ain't no padding. But I will include them after all the searches are done.
Delete@6:57pm Why would highlighting instances where Universities paid for you to travel onsite and present open seminars to the department be padding? In the context of career accomplishments an invite for a seminar presentation seems substantial
DeleteIt is definitely considered padding where I am at now. If you put that in your tenure package CV you will be laughed at and not taken seriously.
DeleteWell I guess it's lucky that most people on this board aren't applying for positions that come with tenure then...
DeleteYour CV is a detailed overview of your Life's Work. Really, you shouldn't ever take things off of it. Don't put anything on your CV that you would have to take off before going up for tenure.
DeleteI guess that's an individual preference. I received just the opposite advice from folks reviewing my CV for faculty applications-like including lines such as my undergraduate poster session honorable mention and my research experiences from before undergraduate would swamp out important things that search committees reviewing hundreds of applications might miss. I suppose it depends on the context
DeleteAny new re: on-sites for Virginia Commonwealth University?
ReplyDeleteI heard the theory onsites are already scheduled.
DeleteYes, their theory onsites should be completed, or at least very close to it. I think bio campus invites were sent out recently.
Deletehow about the organic-bio position?
Deleteany update on U of Minnesota Duluth?
ReplyDeleteas someone turned down for the materials position last year I am eager to see who they choose this year. good luck everyone.
DeleteThey will choose one in the end of this month.
DeleteDid they schedule on-site visits?
DeleteA rejection from University of Mississippi.
ReplyDeleteThe University of Memphis is scheduling phone interviews.
ReplyDeleteFor which position?
DeleteTheory.
DeleteHas Wyoming scheduled on-sites?
ReplyDeleteI have a question regarding negotiating at a PUI - what did you all negotiate? How long did the negotiations last for? Once the final offer was drawn & send via mail, what was the time line that was connected to that offer?
ReplyDeleteI am interviewing at another school, got an offer for a position and am wondering if it will be enough time to get the response from school2 before deciding on offer from school1. Anybody experience with situations like that?
I just asked explicitly how long I had to answer. Then I told school 2 that I have another offer, but was interested in them. And that way they could speed up on their end, if possible.
DeletePUIs typically give you 1-2 weeks from the time the initial offer is sent. The negotiations are included in this time frame (unless you negotiate for more time, of course). The key things to negotiate are salary, start-up (and how those funds will be allocated), and timeline to make a decision. Other things to consider are course releases, money for conferences, etc.
DeleteI agree with 9:03- tell school 2 you have another offer, but that you are really interested in them and if they're interested in you, they may try to move their process faster. You can also ask School 1 for more time to make your decision.
10:56 cont.
DeleteYou can also see if School 2 will move your interview up earlier
9:03 here, I forgot to answer part of your question. Like 10:56, I negotiated salary, start-up, and a large piece of instrumentation that the institution would purchase.
DeleteHas anyone heard back from VCU after their video interview like two or three weeks ago?
ReplyDeleteAny news from NYU and Sripps?? I find it bizarre that they haven't invited people for interview by now (at least looking at their calendar)...
ReplyDeleteAnonymous February 6, 2020 at 12:25 PM Replied to your (?) previous question about Scripps. Nothing about NYU as far as I know.
DeleteThanks for the info...
DeleteI went to Scripps during Christmas last year. I saw a poster posting upcoming seminars of three candidates, who are usual suspects, as you might know.
DeleteAs far as I know NYU did all of their on-sites already
DeleteAnyone knows the status of the following searches?
ReplyDelete(1) U of Michigan (Life Science Institute)
(2) Indiana U (Chem Dept)
(3) IUPUI (Chem/Chem Bio Dept)
(4) UC Davis (Chem Dept)
(5) Emory U (Pharma/Chem Bio Dept)
(6) Purdue U (Chem Dept)
(7) UCSD (joint Chem and Pharma)
Thanks a bunch, everyone for your help!!!
Purdue (biochemistry search) has scheduled on-sites
DeleteIUPUI has hired their person.
DeleteI’ve been waiting on the U Michigan LSI (natural products) too. No idea what’s taking so long.
Purdue Analytical chem has done on sites at least, I think. Pretty sure that’s the case with IU, too.
UCSD SIO/Skaggs has already held on-sites
Just heard through the grapevine that U Michigan LSI Natural Products has scheduled on-sites with their priority candidates.
DeleteIndiana University Chemistry has conducted on sites
DeleteDoes anybody know what's going on with Yale Chem E and UCSD Chem E?
ReplyDeleteno news...
DeleteUCSD has begun posting seminar from postdocs (presumably faculty candidate).
DeleteAny update on Old Dominion U after video interview a few weeks ago?
ReplyDeleteWondering the same thing.
DeleteOn-sites are being scheduled for the next few weeks
DeleteI was told today by Old Dominion that:
Delete"Thank you for your continued interest in the position. We were limited in the number of on-site interviews we could host and could not invite all candidates to campus. However, you will remain in our applicant pool until the position is filled. We will let you know if the situation changes."
Sigh.
Did you have the Skype interview with them? I did the Skype with them and never heard anything back, even not the above email you mentioned.
Deleteany news from Wyoming?
ReplyDeleteHave heard nothing since the phone interview.. probably no news is bad news at this point. They told me they'd be conducting on-sites mid-February
DeleteThanks! No news is supposed to be good news!:)
DeleteSo with Marshall Brennan (rightfully! - congrats, Marshall!) taking parental leave starting this week [https://twitter.com/Organometallica/status/1226861770138148864], do we know if the Bumper Cars is going to be tossed to anyone else this year?
ReplyDeleteBumper cars seems like the perfect paternity leave past time ;)
DeleteI'm not sure if you meant he should still do it while on paternity leave for "fun", but we need to stop expecting any work (emails, writing, really any contact at all!) from people when they are on parental leave. It is not a vacation. It is in actuality a special form of hell at times. The fact that our society oftentimes refers to parental leave as time-off, a vacation, or a break is horrible and deeply inaccurate. This line of thinking needs to stop.
Deletesomeone should just start a twitter for it
DeleteI have my second visit to one of my top choice programs this week. Is there anything I should know? Any things you wished you asked? Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteA useful resource: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acs.chemmater.9b04051
DeleteQueens College is scheduling on-campus visits for their computational materials chemistry position.
ReplyDeleteUniversity of the District of Columbia is scheduling phone interviews.
ReplyDeleteQuestion about second visits... Do most schools only invite one person for a second visit? Is this a 'you are our person' move or are they also playing the game and inviting top two or three just in case? Thoughts...
ReplyDeleteI have never had such a chance, but I noticed both situations from schools that I interviewed.
DeleteIn my limited experience, schools usually have 2 or 3 on-sites scheduled.
DeleteI assumed it was only if they already made you an offer. Can anyone else comment?
Delete@3.36. The question was about second visits for the on-sites. After 2-4 people are interviewed on-site and the search committee has chosen the top choice candidate, the top choice is invited for the second visit for negotiations.
Delete@9.43. Most of places invite only one person per position for a second visit. Some departments have multiple second visits scheduled if they intend to hire more than one that year (e.g. one chem bio and one organic).
Chem E updates:
ReplyDeleteCaltech, UCSD, and Notre Dame have posted seminars. Buffalo began sending rejections.
Berkeley Chemistry's soft matter search was closed without any offers this year
ReplyDeleteBerkeley chemistry has made an offer decision today, but I don't know which field
DeleteShould be chem bio
DeleteWeren't they looking to hire multiple in soft matter/polymer science?
DeletePerhaps somebody on the other side of this would be willing to weigh in: why don't the vast majority of departments inform candidates once an offer has been made? There are only a few candidates brought on site, so what is the thinking behind not informing each of them once a decision has been reached - even if it is simply an email acknowledgement that an offer has been extended to someone other than you?
ReplyDeleteThey want to keep their options open, in case top candidate rejects the offer. They can certainly let the candidates know of their rejection after someone accepts the offer, however it gets too late and everyone just moves on by then.
DeleteI suppose I still agree with 5:44 in this situation though. It won't be a secret once they make a second offer if they want to make once so what's the point of the secrecy at the time of the first offer?
Delete(at my university) It is an HR issue. There are strict guidelines for how and when you can contact applicants. One has to receive permission from HR before reaching out to a group of 'top' candidates. Individual candidates cannot be reached outside of that channel (shouldn't ask individuals about letters, more info, etc). Therefore, everything is extremely slow. There is also a possibility that a department is holding the door open to reach out to others that are not brought to campus. The permissions on communications are over the top. After the offer has been made to a candidate, there is the possibility to notify applicants. But by that time, it is so long in the process, that it (unfortunately) leads departments to not reach out at all. It isn't done on purpose or maliciously to candidate, it is having to follow strict HR guidelines so that they don't pull the search from the department...
Delete+1 for HR issue. Not allowed to contact anyone for either a positive or negative outcome, it needs to handled by HR.
DeleteDo these HR rules differ wildly at different universities? Different states perhaps? Since clearly some universities do not have these rules and run transparent searches, or I suppose simply don't follow the rules, I'm not sure.
Delete+1 for HR issue. Also as a search committee member we were forbidden to google the candidates. Not sure if it's because state institution or just weird institutional policies.
DeleteJohn Hopkins ChemE scheduling skype interviews.
ReplyDeleteIs this teaching position or the tenure track?
DeleteThere are some positions I did phone interviews and nothing since then including here.
ReplyDeleteAs second visits are starting to come out, a useful resource: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acs.chemmater.9b04051
ReplyDeleteI had not seen this yet. Thanks!!
DeleteAny news from U of New Mexico for materials chem?
ReplyDeleteI wonder why more offers aren't announced in this thread? It's interesting that so many interviews get chronicled here but we see very few (if any?) "University of X has made an offer" posts.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing that unless you're the lucky person, there's just no way to know...
DeleteUC Riverside, Chemistry Department, Advancing Diversity Program is scheduling onsite interviews
ReplyDeleteAre they also advancing age diversity at Riverside?
DeleteIrrelevant discussion on this posting is unwelcome.
DeleteStartup ideas for a computational person in R1/2 schools? Will that be similar to other areas?
ReplyDeleteSmaller (like 2/3 (or even 1/2) to 3/4) except at places that have no HPC infrastructure (and sometimes even then), or possibly a department that is flush with cash but in a way that they have to give out all money equally because the people who gave them the cash think all chemists cost the same and thus said you must distribute this equally.
DeleteAsk for specific money for a postdoc if you can. Even at R2s. There are enough out there that you can get someone pretty good. And you might be able to keep them for a while...
DeleteI was wondering what's, reasonably, the latest one would hear on interviews from ChemE departments?
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned before here nothing seems to have happened with Yale CE so far and although I haven't read about it, the same with Cornell CE. I've had a few on-sites now and feel these schools may come too late, if they come.
Received rejection letter from Bucknell. Their physical chemistry position has been filled.
ReplyDeleteAnd here I am still waiting for their rejection email. Thanks for the update and congrats!
DeleteHas anyone received good news for any of the 3 positions at UBC this year?
ReplyDeleteReceived a rejection from UC Irvine "open"/inorganic position. Seems they've made their selection
ReplyDeleteRejected by eHarmony
ReplyDeleteMaryland inorganic has made an offer.
ReplyDeleteSuper huge thanks for informing us!
DeleteJohns Hopkins Chem Bio E is asking for letters (again?)
ReplyDeleteTulane inorganic has finished their search

DeleteMichigan State University, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, is scheduling on-sites.
ReplyDeleteMight be late to the game... but has anyone heard anything from UAB?
ReplyDeleteAnybody know anything about a UF chemistry offer?
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard anything yet either.
Deleteanyone know of a UConn offer?
ReplyDeleteUniversity of Utah rejection
ReplyDeleteI got the rejection as well. Shake hands
DeleteSame. Doesn't seem like they made 2 offers this year like they said they were going to
DeleteAnon @12:55PM, do you know anything specific? I interviewed there in December and got radio silence since then. I didn't get this rejection that people here are discussing, so maybe I'm still in the running? Who knows.
DeleteFrom 12:55, nope nothing specific - sorry! Only heard that they had not made an offer for the materials position so far. Perhaps it is still possible though. Good luck!
DeleteI had one onsite interview last December and I was told by one search committee member that I was ranked as 2nd candidate last month. The department was negotiating with the 1st candidate in January. However, early last week, I received an email from the search committee chair asking me "are you still available and interested in our position? Please let me know as soon as possible!" I thought it is a promising sign and replied "yes, I am very interested...." immediately. To my disappointment, I have not received any reply since that email. I was wondering: should I contact the chair for more information? or just wait until they contact me? Thanks!
ReplyDeletei think you should stay positive, there is a good chance they are running paperwork through the upper administration. i feel like an email follow up would be appropriate in this case.
DeleteWhere was this position? I just turned one down that fits your description and might be able to give you some information.
DeleteThank you. It is U of Cincinnati
DeleteThat wasn't the one. Sorry!
Deleteit's OK. good luck to us
DeleteI heard this paperwork takes more than one week or two to complete. (I am also waiting for something similar on my end. It has been a week.) Anyway, I would like to send out my preliminary congratulations!
DeleteOK. I will keep my fingers crossed and thank you for your kindness. I will keep you posted.
DeleteU Victoria positions is filled: https://saidaminovlab.com/
ReplyDeleteI think the lab you posted is for the position from last year.
DeleteDoes anyone have information about the progress for Carnegie Mellon?
ReplyDeleteAll on-sites done..the last one was last week I believe
DeleteOh yeah... I forgot to put this on here. University of Denver's position is filled.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to you!
DeleteAnd what about CU Denver?
DeleteCU Denver has completed their on-sites. Not sure if any final decisions have been made.
DeleteHas anyone heard from the ucmerced synthetic search?
ReplyDelete
