ReplyDeleteThere was an opening for Chemical Engineering at GaTech with Sept 1 priority date (I can't find it in the ChemE spreadsheet). I applied late, but they still requested letters like a week before Thanksgiving, which I thought was a good sign. (1) Did anyone else apply? (2) Have you heard anything back?
ReplyDeleteI also applied late. I didn't know the opening until I went to a conference in November. I just applied a few days ago and just got notified today that the application was received.

Many thanks to this community and the admins for your valuable advice and information! While certainly not easy, it is possible to get these jobs folks, don't let the nay-sayers get you down too much!

DeleteHow long on average after the priority deadline has it taken for people to receive a phone/skype interview request or rejection letter? I'm sure this varies some from school to school.
ReplyDeleteThis varies a lot depending on the size of the school, the time of the year, etc. In general, rejection letters take months, so don't wait for those (you'll hear the position has been filled before you get a rejection in many cases).
DeleteIf you can narrow your question, maybe we can provide a better answer. In my experience: 1) PUIs take 2-3 weeks before remote interviews; 2) PhD programs take closer to 1-1.5 months. But this is a handful of data points, not an exhaustive survey. I had one or two places call me for a remote interview a week after their priority date, too.
Just this year I have found that this varies quite a lot. The most common timeline as far as I can tell is 2-3 weeks after the priority date, though I also had a phone interview scheduled last week for a priority date of 10/1. I've been applying to R1/R2 schools.
DeleteYour answer of it varies pretty much sums it up. There are a lot of automated rejection letters sent in February/March. Phone/skype/straight to on-site interviews could happen anytime until a candidate has accepted the position which might not be until March or even later. There doesn't seem to be much correlation between the priority date and when things start happening.

Delete[OP] Yeah, I was under the same impression and was a bit confused to get the email, too. There was also a "sustainability" position and two satellite campus listings... maybe it was one of those? Or it's completely possible that they're doing a second round.

DeleteQuestion for applicants: To whom do you expect your application materials to be accessible during the application process? Our department makes everything accessible to every departmental employee. For the record, I don't think that lecturers, stockroom personnel, I/T staff, adjuncts, and lab instructors should be able to view a candidate's academic transcripts or research proposals. I'm curious what other people think, whether they've ever even thought about it, and if anyone includes restrictive markings on their proposals (e.g. "not for distribution outside of the T/TT faculty pool").
ReplyDeleteI don't care too much about it personally, but I've been to onsites where I've met with all the staff in the department, and they definitely had my application printed out.
DeleteI have not included a disclaimer like you mentioned. Some job postings specify that the applications will be made available to all faculty (including teaching faculty like lab instructors, etc.). And that has been my assumption for every department that I've applied to. Some of my one-on-one meetings during on-sites have been with lower ranking instructors, so it makes sense that they should see my materials. I don't believe it is customary for other staff to get access to the materials, but I wouldn't care if they did.
DeleteWhy is this a concern? Afraid someone in the stockroom is going to scoop you? These people are also going to be your co-workers so there is no reason they should have access to this information if they want.
DeleteOP here: I certainly don't think the stockroom worker is going to scoop our candidates, I guess I just perceive proposals as intellectual property that should be protected as a courtesy. This is especially true for candidates who are leaving other institutions where they have already established independent research programs. For these people, their research plans are no longer hypothetical, but are usually fairly well-developed, which makes them all the more sensitive. FWIW, I don't allow my own research plans and proposals to be distributed freely among my department colleagues, and no can request access unless it's part of an annual evaluation.

DeleteIdeally, I think the application materials should be restricted to a "need to know" basis. If only senior faculty can participate in the hiring decision making then only they should have access. If all the T/TT faculty are involved, then they should all get it. Some variation in what people can access is probably reasonable, for example more people have "need to know" for a CV than the research proposals or transcripts.
DeletePostdocs and grad students have input at a lot of places, but they should never have access to proposals. I see a lot less risk in letting lecturers have access compared to PD/GS, but its hard to see how they have a need to know for proposals, basing their input on the public part of an interview would be more appropriate.
I did notice that Wisconsin and maybe a few other places said the application materials could be considered public information, this is scary. I would hope any information about requests for applications is also public since this is an avenue for abuse. It might have only applied to short list candidates, but obviously the successful ones are who could come under attack if someone else feels jilted.
On the one hand, these are your private ideas. On the other hand, who cares?
DeleteIt feels like these are novel, precious ideas. And they are. To YOU. In some fields, a great idea can be quickly picked up by a massive group and you can be scooped, sure. But anyone in the T/TT arena have several dozen of their own novel, precious ideas. Why would they want yours? They'd love to discuss it and give you oodles of feedback on how to make your great idea, that YOU are doing, even better! The support personnel don't care and don't have the resources to go after it. If you have put your applications out to 50 schools, each with 20 T/TT faculty, the support personnel are immaterial to the other THOUSAND people. And as 7:09 observed, your packets can become PUBLIC, especially with the California schools.
I have found that chemists have a particular paranoia about this worry. The sandbox is so small, and the tools so universal, that every one has heard a horror story about a big group stealing a smaller group's idea, or a PI pitting two graduate students against each other on the same project. I urge you to reject this approach. You know who the heels and the blackhats of your field are. Don't talk to them! Everyone else has their own irons in the fire and DOES NOT WANT YOURS. But they are happy discuss science and MAKE YOUR IDEAS BETTER. Chemical biology and biochem have it easier because the field is so broad that there is still a lot of elbow room.
I know shedding this mindset can be hard, and I still fall victim to it too, especially with my purely synthetic organic projects. But you have MANY great ideas! Some of them have been independently conceived of by others and are being pursing independently. That's ok and normal. Any great idea will have been thought of by others and the competition is supposed to drive us forward faster, right? You WILL find a supportive department where your ideas are valued and you can thrive! Who knows, maybe one of the undergraduates in that department will be enamored and inspired by seeing your ideas and stay on to be your best grad student. Communicate, and welcome the dissemination. Don't let a misguided expectation about privacy paralyze you.
IP theft does happen and is something to worry about - How about the Soviets and nuclear weapons or Watson and Crick basically stealing Rosalind Franklin's results. If its worth stealing, somebody will do it if they get the access. It is unfortunate.

DeleteThere are nearly 2x the number of openings for organic compared to biochem or anal which are the other largest hiring areas this year. It isn't a dead field, it is a competitive field.
DeleteNowadays, there seems to be a tacit expectation that synthesis is only the first (and not even the most important) step in research programs. Even overtly synthetic grant programs like NSF SYN crack down on proposals that don't go the extra mile beyond synthesis. A recent review from the PM of that program said "the proposed synthetic methodology is quite clever and was enthusiastically received by the panel, but the panel's enthusiasm for the work was partially dampened because the proposal lacked plans to test the materials". For reference, the solicitation for that program explicitly says "The Chemical Synthesis Program does not support projects where the main objectives are to study the properties of target systems, even though they may contain a large synthetic component". There's a lot of subtlety built in there compared to other programs I've applied to.

DeleteIt cyclical. Those pills that make you healthier and live longer? Thanks synthetic chemistry! People eventually re-realize that and hiring goes back up (this is more directed toward industry, maybe some of those folks can weigh in?). I'd agree with 10:49. 9:07, I feel your pain, but man, you should hear my chair gripe about the cost of synthetic start up packages versus theoretical ones. We have a strong theoretical group and the joke is that if administration had their way the whole department would be theoretical; a better safety record and smaller startups.

People who have had offers from PUIs - how long did they give you to respond and what's the longest you've gotten this extended to?
ReplyDeleteI have had some variability. One provided 10 days to respond/decide while another provided 4 business days. I was fortunate that I did not have to try and negotiate any extensions.
DeleteMy experience has been 2 weeks as an absolute maximum so they don't lose other candidates. I just received an offer with a hard 1 week deadline due to the end of the semester.
