Via the open thread from the Faculty Jobs List, this question:
Has anyone gotten the sense that there are fewer candidates on the market this year? I've heard from a couple schools that they are getting way fewer applications than expected.
I would like to hear from search committee members, either in the comments or via email. I'm happy to provide confidentiality if desired.
I'm at a PUI and we haven't yet hit our review-by date but I think the number of early applicants is comparable to (if not higher than) what we've had in the past. I can update once they're all in.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a *lot* of due dates get moved back if that means anything.
ReplyDeleteSome R1’s salaries are lower than a good PUI.
ReplyDeleteI have definitely gotten that sense, and have been wondering if it's a nationwide trend. Currently on a search committee at an R1. We're definitely running way lower that normal for being within 2 weeks of the deadline.
ReplyDeleteThis would be fantastic news if true.
ReplyDeleteIt is always that a small group of candidates who get interviews and offers everywhere. A small pool might not mean too much for capable but less stellar candidates.
DeleteAs much I hate for this to be true, I'm willing to define stellar as extremely well-networked/connected for academic searches. Last year's job search proved it to me more than ever, I literally saw a candidate with 1 paper from PhD/PD get interviews/offers everywhere.
DeleteJust make sure you have AI/ML in all of your proposals-then you'll be in that small group.
DeleteI've been seeing jobs re-posted on websites like HigherEd after the priority deadline. Is this a glitch of the website or are the schools having them be re-posted because they want more applicants?
ReplyDeleteThis is my first time being on a search committee, but the faculty seem to act like we've gotten a normal number. FWIW, this is at a PUI. We were one of the earlier deadlines, so I think we just got a lot of the applications at the last minute.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't reached our deadline yet, but it looks fairly normal so far (R1, but not top 50).
