  7. Has anyone else noticed that correspondence relating to interview/onsite visit offers/next steps seem to come after hours and on weekends while rejections seem to come between M-F 9-5?

Just a little unscientific analysis I am doing which has helped me stress less during the workday, but it could just me be.

  8. I just got a rejection email from Montclair State University (bio-analytical chemistry). I did an on-site there in December.

  13. When an original TT advertisement reopens and you were interviewed before they reopened the position but have not been outright rejected, does this mean that you are no longer under serious consideration? I don’t understand the point of reopening a position later in the season and not keeping applicants informed (especially a candidate that has been interviewed).

    1. I had a phone interview for a TT position in Feb. Later that week the position was reposted in multiple places. That next week I was invited for on-site.

People explained to me sometimes it's a requirement of the state or institution, but can depend on the school. Good luck!

    2. I think I replied to the original post by Anon 5:23 PM, when his/her situation first came up.

What ended up happening in my case is the job was reposted for a couple of days, then closed, then a week or so later I got a rejection email as another candidate was hired. So I think they had to have the posting be in an “active” state in order to make the offer. YMMV

    3. OP here, thanks for the responses. It seems for this specific institution, there may be a lack of applicants, although I am not certain.

    4. Sometimes the openings have a time limit and they have to "re-open" the search even though it is simply a continuation.

  14. Has anyone heard from Adelphi U or Hofstra U, two Long Island schools with p-chem openings?

    1. I think Adelphi scheduled phone interviews way back ago, by December. Right after their priority date. I suppose that by this time the search is already done and somebody has accepted the position. I did not apply to Hofstra, but I remember they were one of the last schools to open a PChem position (somewhere around mid-January). Anohter NY school that opened very late was Manhattan College, which I have never heard anything yet.

    1. ! I wonder if not getting a rejection letter from them back when they were sent out is a good sign.. May I ask if you checked your application to see if they asked for recommendation letters from your references? Mine still says not requested.

    2. I just checked and my application says they solicited letters at the end of October.

  18. A perfectly worded rejection from Wake Forest University (theory): "In light of the strength of the applicant pool, we decided not to proceed with your candidacy."

    1. At my institution they extended an offer but in light of the strength of the applicant pool they should not have proceeded.

  37. I'm not sure how widespread this is in other fields or in non-academic job searches, but I'm pretty disappointed in how many places still haven't sent notifications to unsuccessful applicants for faculty positions. I'd say I haven't heard anything from at least half of the schools I applied to.

  38. For a job that requires 60+ hour workweeks, <10% funding paylines, huge teaching loads, endless bureaucracy, no pension, and not-great pay, I'm surprised we want these jobs at all. But a lot of us do. There's something wrong with us.
