ReplyDeleteHi everyone,
ReplyDeleteThe current thread format is not an efficient way to share status updates. I made a spreadsheet here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1in3HYdE5xbiLoAOMwkdL4_I-UkjJDXJctt9AaLdGPz0/edit#gid=0
Anyone can add anonymous comments. If you add new information as a comment, I will add it to the spreadsheet. I will start converting the information already in the open thread to this spreadsheet format.
I think I finished adding all information from this year's two open threads. If anyone else wants to help aggregate information there, send me an e-mail. My name is Sean Edington and I'm easy enough to find online.

ReplyDeleteYes, same here!
DeleteOpen position or inorganic?
Deleteopen
DeleteJust did the interview -- they mentioned they had 300 applicants
Delete300 applicants isn't too surprising considering the backlog of people and it is an open position so all areas will apply.
DeleteOut of curiosity, do you think 300 applicants would be surprising in a normal, non-pandemic year? What's normal for an R1 in a college town far from the coasts?

DeleteIt's not the first time that The Scripps Research Institute lies about stuff
DeleteI know someone who was contacted for a zoom interview for the Arizona State Polymer position.
ReplyDeleteNYU theory have also conducted webinars. It is listed in the events section as NYUAD
ReplyDeleteMost probably, that is for a different position at the Abu Dhabi campus, not for the NYU theory positions.

DeleteNot here either. They did say it would take a while.
DeletePardon my ignorance:
ReplyDeleteAfter an onsite, do I send thank you emails to everyone on the committee or just the chair of the committee + dean?
I sent a personalized email to everyone I had a meeting with. I met with a lot of people who were not on the committee.
DeleteSame here - I sent personalized e-mails to everyone with whom I spoke.
DeleteWould two or three lines enough if you send to everyone with whom you spoke?
DeleteDo you write Dr. XX, Prof XX or just their first name?
I think Dr./Prof/first name is a bit of a judgement call from situation to situation, but if I had a good conversation I usually go with first name. You want the faculty to see you as a colleague, and I have never been in a department where the faculty don't call each other by their first names. Dr./Prof. feels like a grad student move to me. I think two or three lines is appropriate. You want to thank them for taking the time to meet with you, say you enjoyed talking to them, and then say you hope to speak with them again soon. In the end it probably won't make much of a difference. Good luck!
