C&EN: "Hokkaido University is cited in fatal HF accident"

Via C&EN, this update (article by Katsumori Matsuoka):
Following a fatal accident involving hydrofluoric acid (HF), the city of Sapporo, Japan, has cited Hokkaido University for violations of Japan’s poisonous substances control act. One student died and two were injured in the Aug. 27 incident.

The city sent a violation letter after an Aug. 28 municipal inspection of the laboratory where the accident occurred. It identified four areas of noncompliance related to the management of hazardous substances.

Inspectors found that nontoxic reagents were stored in a cabinet designated exclusively for toxic substances. They also found that the ledger used to record the receipt and use of HF was unaccounted for and that the key to the toxic substance storage cabinet was not being properly checked in and out. Finally, they determined that containers into which HF and other substances were poured lacked required labeling to identify the contents as poisonous...

...In response to an inquiry by C&EN, Hokkaido University’s public relations office writes in an email, “Each laboratory is required to implement risk‑reduction measures appropriate to the types of chemicals handled and their associated hazards. The laboratory concerned had calcium gluconate prepared.” The office adds, “Going forward, we will require laboratories that possess HF to prepare calcium gluconate and other advance measures, and we will distribute posters summarizing procedures for responding to chemical burns.”
From my perspective, we still don't understand a lot of details about this case. Who was the PI? Why was there so much HF? What exactly happened? I guess we will see what develops over this next year.

Iran War causes US fluoride shortage

Via a Google Alert I have for "shortage", this news from yesterday:

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Shreveport’s water system has been without fluoride for about a week, Mayor Tom Arceneaux said.

City leaders say the shortage stems from a nationwide supply chain issue and is temporary.

I hadn't heard about this, but I found this article from NPR from April of this year:

...U.S. water systems are facing a shortage of hydrofluorosilicic acid, a chemical used to fluoridate drinking water to prevent cavities and tooth decay.

The specialized chemical is mainly sourced from a small pool of international producers. And the conflict in the Middle East is disrupting the supply chain. Managers of U.S. water systems say the shortage in fluoridation chemicals is unprecedented.

Companies make the acid in large factories, primarily overseas. U.S. suppliers import and deliver the product. The acid arrives at water treatment plants across the U.S. in liquid form, transported in 5,000 gallon tanker trucks. "We don't manufacture it, we don't produce it. All of our chemicals are purchased, and they rely on the supply chain in order to get to our plants," Garbark says.

Israel is one of the world's leading producers of the chemical. "As we understand it, one of the main suppliers in Israel lost a number of employees temporarily, because they've been called up into service in the Israeli military," says Dan Hartnett, chief policy officer at the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies. "That essentially shut down production at their facility in Israel. They haven't been producing acid. They haven't been able to ship it out."

We've seen supply chains fragment because of war (Ukraine) and disease (COVID.) We'll have to see what happens here and how new suppliers step in to fill the gap.

Have a great weekend

Well, this was a fun week, mostly. I hope that you had a fun week. I plan to have a really fun weekend, and we'll see you on Tuesday.

C&EN's Cities of Chemistry

For any career, a network is everything. For chemists, that network is highly specialized. You need laboratory space. You need coworkers and mentors with certain skill sets. And you need institutions. Depending on how you’d like your career to unfold, those institutions can include academic centers, big industrial companies, start-up accelerators and incubators, and venture capital firms.

These institutions are all around the US and all around the globe. As it turns out, in an increasingly digital world, geography still matters.

Different cities and regions play host to different kinds of chemistry ecosystems. Houston, long the stronghold of the petrochemical industry, is now establishing itself as the geographic cornerstone of the US energy transition. Boston may not house the headquarters of top US pharmaceutical companies, but it commands the most chemistry-related venture capital investment and the third-highest chemistry article output, reflecting its status as a life sciences hub spanning start-ups, academia, and research hospitals.

C&EN has evaluated the features that make a city, state, or country ripe for building a career in chemistry. Using a mix of public and private data, we’ve created interactive tools so you can see what regions are dominant as research centers, chemical industry hubs, and start-up havens—ultimately, whatever matters most to you.

Check it out, especially the commercial lab real estate ranking - fascinating.

Memphis high school student burned in chemistry experiment gone awry

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Central High School basketball player was treated at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital last week after he was burned during a science experiment gone wrong.
Tije’a Wilks was being recorded by another student mixing chemicals and then lighting them when they suddenly burst into flames. You can see his chemistry teacher standing beside him when it happened.
“The teacher had a pastry bowl on the ground, which consisted of potassium, citrate, zinc, and sulfur,” said Andria Wilks. “Once he did strike, instead of it being a ball of smoke, it was a ball of fire.”
I'm delighted that the teacher was having his kids to a relatively fun chemistry experiment (looks like it should have been potassium chlorate as the oxidizer), but very concerned that they were clearly inadequately protected from my brief viewing of the video. Best wishes to the victim and the family.

Odd MIT chemical safety incident

Via the MIT internal emergency alert page (the Aug. 29, 2026, 3:36 p.m. edit):

Offices across campus have been responding to a reported hazardous material incident involving a single individual in a chemistry laboratory. The Institute became aware of the matter after the individual, a graduate student, self-reported to a local emergency room and claimed to have synthesized dimethyl mercury, a compound that is not authorized as part of their research program. Emerging information calls into question whether this compound was in fact synthesized. We are also able to disclose, with the student’s permission, that while the student remains under medical supervision, their initial blood test result, which was received today, shows no sign of exposure to mercury.

Building 18 remains closed at least through Sunday as specialized decontamination efforts continue out of an abundance of caution. This work will continue, and the building will remain closed until the work is complete.

This is a pretty strange story. Sounds like the things that we know are that 1) MIT worked on specialized decontamination because 2) there was concern that Building 18 surfaces may have been contaminated with 3) dimethyl mercury (?), perhaps synthesized by a graduate student?

I've been doing this long enough to know to hold initial reports with some skepticism without independent and orthogonal confirmation. I sure would like to know what happened. Here's hoping that we find out more.

Have a good weekend

My week was very good, and I managed some tricky logistics without too much trouble. I hope that you had a good week as well. Enjoy your weekend, and see you on Monday.

Hokkaido University graduate student dies of hydrofluoric acid exposure

Via the ACS DCHAS listserv, this bad news (article by the Hong Kong Standard):
A male graduate student died after being drenched in hydrofluoric acid, known as "bone-dissolving water," at Hokkaido University's science faculty building in Sapporo on Thursday morning. Two other students who rushed to help were also injured.

The incident occurred around 8.30am. University officials said the student who died had come into direct contact with a large amount of the acid, possibly on his head or face. The two others, a graduate student and an undergraduate, sustained minor injuries and were discharged after check-ups.

The university clarified that the incident did not occur during an experiment. Police are investigating how the chemical was stored and handled.

Hydrofluoric acid is a highly toxic chemical regulated under Japan's Poisonous and Deleterious Substances Control Act. Its fluoride ions can penetrate skin and cause systemic toxicity, including cardiac arrest.
Here is the original Hokkaido University press release, which (presuming Google Translate's accuracy) is remarkably prompt for such shattering and sad news (i.e. the death was said to take place on Thursday, August 27, 2026.). We will need to understand how this happened, so that it can be avoided in the future. My prayers for the deceased and their family.

NBC Boston: "Explosive, radioactive substances at late chemist's home bring bomb squad to Lexington"

Via Google News, this story from July 22:

A highly explosive chemical, radioactive substances and more hazardous materials found at a late chemist's house in Lexington brought out the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad for a complex removal Monday, officials said.

A hazmat team and an FBI bomb technician were also part of the response prompted by a clean-out of a home on Longfellow Road, state and local fire officials said Tuesday. Lexington fire officials called in the help after finding dozens of bottles of powders, liquids and solids, including the highly explosive chemical picric acid and fire hazards.

Police and firefighters secured the area around the home while hazmat and bomb technicians entered and carefully searched it, organizing the materials and removing them to a truck filled with sand over about seven hours. Officials said that an ambulance and firefighters with a charged hose were on standby, just in case.

It's not like local ACS sections don't already have plenty of things to do and not enough resources, but volunteering to help fire departments with household chemical troves might be a good one.

The Daily Californian: "UC Berkeley professor Kwabena Bediako under investigation for sexual harassment allegations"

Written by Emily Hamill, this news from The Daily Californian:

UC Berkeley associate professor of chemistry Kwabena Bediako is under investigation by campus following accusations of sexual harassment and discrimination from a graduate student, detailed in a widely circulated letter.

The letter has amassed 786 signatures from science students, researchers and faculty from universities across the country, including UC Berkeley, Stanford University, Harvard University and Columbia University.

During his time at UC Berkeley, Bediako has won various awards and honors, including the Heising-Simons Faculty Fellowship, Philomathia Prize and the NSF CAREER award. He also runs the Bediako Lab, which conducts research at the intersection of chemistry and physics. He is a tenured professor and bears the official title of the Cupola Era Assistant Professor, a prestigious position in UC Berkeley’s chemistry department.

Since the allegations were publicized, nearly every graduate and undergraduate student in the Bediako Lab has left the laboratory.

...The student alleges in the letter that Bediako “initiated repeated, inappropriate attempts to pursue a romantic relationship” with her, often during “scientific and professional engagements.” The student described being placed in “increasingly intimate and personal situations” that were “difficult to navigate” due to the “power imbalance involved” in their adviser-mentee relationship.

In the letter, the student said during a meeting in his office about her manuscript, Bediako directly asked her to have a “more personal, presumably romantic, relationship” with him. She said she was “visibly distressed, silent, and once again fearful for (her) professional standing.”

“The interaction ended with him angrily asking whether all I wanted from him was a PhD; I responded that he should not ask graduate students questions like that,” the student said in the letter.

The student added that one week after the meeting where he “solicited a romantic relationship” with her, they both attended the Gordon Research Conference in Barcelona. She also alleged that he “continued to engage in frequent, unsolicited, persistent, and overly familiar communication that (she) experienced as coercive and intimidating.”

This sounds like quite a list of bad facts. If they are true, Professor Be\diako needs to go.

C&EN: "Indian fertilizer, specialty chemical industries hit by US-Iran war"

Via C&EN, this bad news (article by Aayushi Pratap):

India, one of the world’s largest importers of oil and natural gas, is among the countries hardest hit by breaks in the natural gas and petrochemical supply chains caused by Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz in response to attacks by the US and Israel.

In the Indian chemical industry, fertilizer makers were the first affected. Now, even specialty chemical makers are beginning to feel the pain. The woes of both sectors are largely due to the scarce availability of a single molecule: ammonia, a pungent gas that is a lifeline for many chemical plants. India is one of the world’s leading importers of ammonia, with most of its supplies coming from Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.

Mumbai-based Alkyl Amines Chemicals announced March 16 that it has suspended manufacturing of methyl and ethyl amines and their derivatives at three of its sites due to ammonia shortages.

I know that there is a global impact to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, but it is good/helpful to understand who is impacted the most. This article (linked in the C&EN piece) is also helpful for understanding context.

C&EN: "Samples from asteroid Ryugu contain all five nucleobases"

Pretty cool astrochemistry news (article by Fionna Samuels):

In December 2020, a capsule containing precious cargo fell from the sky and crashed into the Australian outback. The container carried a small amount of dust from the distant asteroid Ryugu. Its return marked the end of the primary Hayabusa2 mission. In the years since, scientists have meticulously studied every aspect of the grains. Now they’ve discovered that the grains contain all five nucleobases—nitrogen-containing organic molecules fundamental to DNA and RNA (Nat. Astron. 2026, DOI: 10.1038/s41550-026-02791-z).

This is not the first time scientists have detected a nucleobase in the Ryugu sample. “I was involved in the initial analysis of Ryugu samples and contributed to the study that reported the detection of uracil,” astrochemist Toshiki Koga of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology writes in an email. But at the time, the amount of material that his team was given was too small to do a more detailed analysis.

Pretty cool that they were able to do a successful analysis on just 11 mg of sample (although from a total synthesis perspective, that seems like so much!)

C&EN: "University of California backs plan for $23 billion research bond"

From C&EN's Krystal Vasquez, this news:

The University of California (UC) system announced March 5 that it’s sponsoring a bipartisan state senate bill that proposes a $23 billion bond to fund research across California, which would be the largest state-level investment in scientific research in US history.

S.B. 895, introduced by California senator Scott Wiener (D) in January, would also establish the California Foundation for Science and Health Research, which would use the money to provide grants and loans to public and private universities, research companies, and health-care organizations across the state.

The bill comes after a year of major turmoil over federal funding in support of the US scientific community. Although fiscal year (FY) 2025 budgets for federal science-funding agencies weren’t too different from FY 2024 levels, federally funded research at more than 600 colleges and universities still saw significant disruptions after the Donald J. Trump administration terminated or froze thousands of research grants last year.

I am sad that it has come to this, but from a broad perspective, it seems like a good move to support scientists in the current system. We can't do this forever.

C&EN: "The chemical industry promises another year of cutbacks"

This bad news from C&EN (article by Alexander Tullo, emphasis mine):

...BASF, the world’s largest chemical maker, wrapped up its earnings season posting a 2.9% decline in 2025 sales and a 38.8% drop in earnings from the previous year. Sales volumes increased for all its businesses except basic chemicals, but prices and currency exchange rates worked against the German firm.

Eastman Chemical cut costs by about $100 million in 2025 and is planning to shed another $125 million–$150 million in expenses this year. Despite that, Eastman’s earnings sunk by 32.7% in 2025 to $627 million, on a 6.5% decline in sales over 2024 values.

Eastman CEO Mark Costa vented his frustrations about the economy to analysts in a conference call. “Everyone’s talking about how great GDP is and its growth last year. [But] if you back out data centers, [artificial intelligence], health care, GDP is sort of flat,” he said, referring to the US gross domestic product. “Eighty percent of our consumers out there are really struggling with the economic challenges they have and the affordability, the fear of what tariffs are going to do, fear about ‘Can I get a new job if I lose mine?’ ”

This more or less confirms what we've known, i.e. things aren't so great for the chemical industry right now. It's not a major source of jobs for entry-level chemists, I suspect, but this doesn't bode well for employment in that sector.

Have a great weekend

I'm in the middle of a wild three weeks, and hey! It's wild. I hope that you're having fun yourself. Have a  great weekend. We'll see you on Monday.

Job posting: coatings/formulation chemist, southwest Michigan

From the inbox:

I'm working with a specialty coatings manufacturer in southwest Michigan to fill a Chemist II role focused on end-use coating formulation. It's not a narrowly defined bench seat, chemists own their projects, work directly with customers, and have real influence on product outcomes. The work involves true formulation (not QC or process support), a meaningful mix of product modifications and new development, and some interesting military-related work. The lab team has doubled in size in recent years, which speaks to the company's momentum.

The ideal candidate has 4+ years of formulation experience in industrial, protective, or commercial coatings - especially anyone with epoxy, urethane, or polysiloxane background. Strong project management and communication skills matter just as much as the chemistry.

World's largest urea plant to be built in Nigeria

Via ChemAnalyst, this news (via a press release):

Toyo Engineering Corporation is pleased to announce that its proprietary urea synthesis and granulation license has been selected for the world's largest urea plant planned by BUA Chemicals Limited ("BUA"), a chemical fertilizer manufacturer in Nigeria. The plant will consist of two production lines, each with a capacity of 4,000 tons per day.

The project is currently in the FEED (Front End Engineering Design) stage. With a view to future license provision, TOYO will serve as the licensor for urea synthesis and granulation, delivering the Process Design Package (PDP).

I have long been curious as to the chemical industry in Africa, and it's pretty cool that the world's largest urea plant will be there. Will have to track its progress.

C&EN: "An old cholesterol drug could help clear PFAS"

In Chemical and Engineering News, this news (article by Saima Sidik)

Paul Smith, a retired nurse anesthetist, has been contending with chronic lymphocytic leukemia since 2012, and his doctor suspects a tumor is forming in his pituitary gland. But despite the uncertainty about his health, a well-known cholesterol management drug is giving him a bit of hope.

Smith lives in a part of Barnstable, Massachusetts, called Centerville, where a local firefighter-training school and nearby airport contaminated the water supply for decades. The facilities allowed environmental leaks of fire-suppressing foam laden with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFAS or “forever chemicals.”

Smith had been drinking the tainted water for years before he learned that it was sending his levels of certain PFAS soaring.

...Smith sought out cholestyramine after finding publications in the scientific literature about its potential benefit for people with high PFAS exposure. Smith’s gastroenterologist was familiar with cholestyramine and considered it safe, so he agreed to give Smith a prescription.

After about 8 months of taking cholestyramine, Smith has seen his PFAS levels drop dramatically. Two fluorinated chemicals became almost undetectable in his blood, and PFHxS dropped to about 30% of what it once was. “It was definitely a psychological boost,” he says.

It's probably not a surprise that there is some kind of drug that will absorb PFAS, but I'm glad there is one that seems to be readily available.

Have a good weekend!

Well, sometimes you gotta work a Saturday and that's life in the big city. But that's all right - this hasn't been a bad week all around. I hope that you're had a good week and that you have a wonderful weekend. See you on Monday.

C&EN: "How chemistry helps make a highlight-reel catch"

It's either sweeps month at C&EN or it's Superbowl time (article by Max Barnhardt):

...But part of what made the Helmet Catch—and so many other spectacular catches in the National Football League (NFL)—possible is a little bit of chemistry baked into the gloves worn by receivers.

Most football gloves are made from a fabric that has been coated on the palm and fingers with a silicone that gives players extra grip as they make a catch.

Manufacturers probably use polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the main polymer on the surface of their gloves. Chains of PDMS are cross-linked to form a 3D network. Mike Brook, a synthetic polymer chemist at McMaster University, says chemists can give silicone all kinds of different properties by controlling the length of chains between cross-links.

Pretty cool article. I'm surprised this hasn't been covered before by C&EN, but I'm glad that it has. Read the whole thing!
