  2. Another cycle begins! I have transitioned from my postdoc to a pretty cushy industry job (...thanks Elon?), so I will only apply to universities in localities that me/my family would be excited to move to. I will say finding time to do research statements etc. will be harder.

Best of luck to others applying! I don't have a great sense for how good to expect the market to be this time around.

  3. Trying not to be too pessimistic about how many openings we have, but week-by-week we're consistently behind the (abysmal) pace from last year. I hoped that we'd see a better rebound for academic openings in the 26-27 cycle, but we appear to be in even worse shape so far. The last several years the pace that percentage differential between year N and year N-1 has pretty much been set in August and held constant through the end of the calendar year at least.

    Not promising first few weeks.

    1. Unfortunately, the broad sentiment I've heard from folks is that a lot of places are tightening their belts or otherwise struggling financially. At this point I don't really expect it to get better (and it may only get worse) until the Republican party is no longer in power.

At least still better than the worst part of Covid (for now).

    2. Our canceled search from last year will go ahead this year, but I fear the startup package offerings will be cut back from what we typically can accommodate.
