The 2020 Chemistry Faculty Jobs List: 434 research/teaching positions and 25 teaching faculty positions

The 2020 Chemistry Faculty Jobs List (curated by Andrew Spaeth and myself) has 434 research/teaching positions and 25 teaching assistant professor positions.

Want to add a position? Here's a Google Form to enter positions. In 2019-2020, we will be adding teaching professor positions, targeting positions that demonstrate an intention to renew permanently, 3 year terms and a promotion ladder and/or are titled "assistant teaching professor" or "associate teaching professor." As of 9/20/19, we are adding community college positions if they explicitly offer tenure.

  22. What's the right way to answer a question about how you would balance your time (at a PUI)?

    1. It depends on the school, and you should get an idea of how they value it in advance, but I'd say something like 50:40:10 teaching/research/service seems appropriate. Good luck!

    2. I think you can typically tell from their websites how research intensive it is. I think 50:50 is the highest percentage of research to expect. I think often it is more like 70:30.

    4. @October 31 6:40 p.m. That's interesting - I'm also applying to PUIs and on my interviews everyone keeps stressing specifically how they intentionally try to keep the service load of assistant professors low. So I also think it varies by institution - I don't think your original assumption was low, though!

    5. In my experience, this question is usually a lot less about "how will you meet the TRS split" and more "how will you manage teaching and research." Lots of people apply to PUIs expecting either to never be in the lab or to be in it all the time. Be honest about how you would plan to balance teaching (including prep) and research. Every PUI I've interacted with in any fashion says that service is not something to stress about since there is always a need for advising, serving on committees, etc.

  23. I got asked in one of my interviews how much start up funding I want. I didn't even know what to say. It did make me realize I have no idea what a typical R1 startup package is in chemistry. In other departments, I've been told not to accept less than $2 million as a startup offer, but I can't see chemistry departments having that much money. What is a typical R1 startup package? $14 and a tshirt?

    1. It depends on how deep the department's pockets are. I have been told that anything in the range of $1 to $1.5 million is reasonable at a major R1. I have also heard of startup packages as large as $2 million, but that is uncommon.

    4. Yeah, Biochemistry start-up packages for top medical schools can be 1 million or more, especially if cutting edge instruments need to be purchased like Cryo-EM. Most chemistry departments in R1s start-up packages seem be between $400,000 - $800,000, but again, packages can be a little more for biochemistry due to how expensive equipment and materials can be to do biomedical research.

    5. Don't just look at the raw cash outlay (I agree with 12:58 that 400-800k is about right). What does it include/exclude? Are there TA lines for graduate support? A postdoc? Summer salary? Renovations? Do those increase the offer? Or must you pay for everything out of startup?

      If you don't have one yet, you should write out a list of equipment needs and price them out. Then you won't be caught flat footed; you can give a number and justify it. They'll ask for this anyway when they're making any offer.

      In all, $1 millionish is a great deal. You'd have to have an offer from somewhere really well-off if your getting a lot more than that. And keep in mind that expectations increase accordingly. If they give you a $2 mil start up package, your tenure is contingent on balancing that investment by earning it back in the form of grant money within 5 years...

  32. Etiquette on canceling interviews (travel not paid for yet)? Now that I'm getting more positive feedback from places I'm really interested in, I don't want to string along the places I'm less interested in and traveling is getting very tiring.

    2. @12:21, I have asked around about the same question and have been told that I shouldn't turn down any site interviews until I have an actual offer in hand. Hiring committees are fickle, and you never know how the situation might change.

      In any event, as exhausting as the interview circuit is, this is a good position to be in :)

    3. Do not cancel any of your site interviews until you have signed paperwork accepting an offer (not just an offer). I canceled some of my later site interviews last year when I had two offers. I declined one offer to accept the second and the second offer was then withdrawn by the University leaving me back at ground zero.

OP here: Thanks for the advice, I certainly don't want to bank too much on offer I haven't signed, however the timeline of offers will be short and I have a lot of interviews quite spread out...so maybe I should ask the opposite question: if I sign an offer after another university has already paid for travel, is there etiquette on dealing with that?

    5. I think this really depends on the specifics of the OP's situation. While the major R1 departments will do whatever it takes to get their top choice candidate (include wait for weeks for this person to make up their mind), many smaller schools and PUI's will move on to the next candidate rather than wait and risk failing the search. Only the OP can tell how serious the "positive feedback" is.

      Re: "sign an offer after another university has already paid for travel"...so university X arranges an on-site visit, pays for hotel and airfare, and right afterwards university Y comes to you with an offer that you decide to take. Is this what you mean? In this case, yeah it kinda sucks for X but these things happen and it is not your fault. I would just explain nicely what happened, thank them for their efforts, and wish them luck.

    6. This is a tough one - I'd be inclined to go on all interviews from places that I was remotely interested in unless I had a good offer in hand. Some people interview better than others, and even beyond that there is an element of randomness in the process. I know people who've gone on 1 interview and gotten one offer, and those who went on 10 or more and got one or no offers.
      If you're very extroverted and make a good first impression, you might be able to decline a few interviews, but even then it's still a crapshoot. Likewise, if you have the option of doing another search next year you could probably decline a few interviews, although politically it is safer to sort it down before applying.

    7. FWIW when I was interviewing I had some scheduled interviews shortly after an offer I was excited about came in. I cancelled the rest if my interviews and none of the places seemed put off. For one of them I had paid a portion of the travel upfront and they reimbursed me even though I didn't come. At that point they'd rather know they're interviewing people who are still available than sink two days of faculty time into interviewing someone they're not going to get. Also, be careful about continuing to go on interviews after an offer has come; if the initial offer finds that you are still "looking" they may get mad and could rescind (I think).

    2. It is certainly dependent on the institution, but it seems to normally be about 8-15 for phone interviews with 2-4 typically invited on campus for additional follow-up.

    3. In my experience, it's usually more like 15-30 depending on the pool of applicants, etc. It's usually around 10%ish of their total applicants.

  43. What is the best way to handle questions asking about partner/spouse (existence, job nature, etc.)? I know technically it is in the legal/illegal boundary and is not an appropriate question to ask, but unfortunately it does seem to come up, especially to female candidates.

    6. I plan to wear my wedding band and use my hyphenated last name. My logic: if members of a department have a problem with hiring a woman because she is married then I have no interest in working there (regardless of how prestigious the department may be). I would rather my creativity and hard work benefit a department that believes in me based on my track record and ideas.

    7. I'm a man, so I know my experience is probably not the same as a woman would have, but it came up on an interview I had last cycle. I answered honestly about my spouse, and I don't feel like it affected my chances, and made my experience negotiating a bit easier. I didn't end up accepting the position (hence why I'm on this forum) but I feel like scientists understand how difficult it can be for a couple to find jobs together. That's just my experience though

    8. Agree! To all those reading: please trust in your credentials to help you find a good new home for your career. Be yourself! The goal should be to find a place to help you thrive in a collegial environment. If you have to be someone else to get a job, then how can you ensure you would be happy there? We need to stop letting academic institutions make us insecure about who we are or devalue all the hard work we have put forth to get us to where we are. Be yourself.

    9. In my opinion, if a department is worried you have a spouse, they are worried about doing a spousal hire or kids (which are a major constraint on time). Departments are generally very upfront about whether a spousal hire is possible or not. As someone with kids and who interviewed very visibly pregnant last year, I just aired it all out on the first day of on-sites. I absolutely do not want to be somewhere that is not supportive of having a family. It is setting myself up for failure and likely misery. It's 2019. If a department is still all/mostly male and seems any sort of hostile towards having a partner, I would run. They don't deserve your awesomeness.

  46. Has anyone been given only ONE option for a remote interview: literally a single date and time for a set time frame? Asking for other options did not yield reasonable alternatives. I have had nine remote interviews, and this next one will be my first that is rather rigid. We can learn a lot about how a department might treat us through these initial interactions (?). It seems they are not setting me up for success. I am trying to find a good fit for my career, and I am certainly not desperate. I do want to be tactful and discerning though. Although, I may be overanalyzing? Most searches provide options and the lack of basic options rather turns me off. Also interestingly, the remote interview is going to be recorded, so the rigid time is strange to me. As a "minority candidate," it sometimes can seem to me like I am being interviewed to satisfy some diversity criteria. Is this overly critical?

    1. I have a few thoughts about this process that are probably not as controversial as I think, but most people wouldn't say. In this case I would say that it is extremely disrespectful of your time for them to not ask for your input. As someone in a position to apply for these jobs I'm sure you have meetings, mentoring, lab work, etc. that you have to schedule around. I don't think you are being overly critical.

      Also, my view is that while these jobs are highly coveted, it isn't worth putting up with a place you don't think will respect you in the long run. When I was younger I would have taken any offer I got, but now I feel discerning. And if I don't get a position, it's fine in the end. Sorry for the wrong reply, but I think if we don't call these places out on this behavior things will never change.

It might be because the search committee is under pressure to complete all of the video interviews to unlock the next step of the search, which involves getting the Dean's approval to bring people on campus for in-person interviews. It might also indicate you are not their top choice, but are still competitive for the position and that's why they are comfortable making strict scheduling demands for a video interview. If they lose you from their candidate pool, they have others to focus on. It sounds cold because it is.

    7. That's really weird and unpleasant. I had a committee member call me to schedule a video interview for next day. Also felt like maybe they had some quota to fill, because during the actual phone interview they were grumbling about how late they were on the hiring process. (Did their favorite candidate accept another offer?) It was my first ever faculty interview and I pretty much bombed it. I kind of wish they had given me more time to prepare.

      I'm at a national lab; there is a hard cut-off of three years for postdocs, and I'm in my third year. =[]

    3. @4:35 - Luckily, I can extend my postdoc for another year (I've only been there for 16 months). I'm trying not to think about this yet, because I don't need that negativity now lol. Which of course means that I'm thinking about it all the time.
      Another option I've considered is getting a teaching position for one year if I can't/don't want to stay where I am.

    6. I've got another year left on my current postdoc (been postdocing for two years so far), will try to definitely apply again next year. Will probably apply to other postdocs at the same time, since I can't extend for more than 3 years.

    7. Things will be really complicated to me. I failed my applications last year with four on-site interviews. This year is my last attempt, otherwise I will be out of US research community. I still haven't heard anything back from ~50 applications.

    8. I will be done with academia, honestly. I tried last year already, although I only applied to about 20 places. I had two phone interviews, but no on sites. This year, I reworked my whole application package, and have applied to about 60. I had two phone interviews so far, and am hoping they lead to some on sites. My PI said I can stay in my postdoc as long as I need, but what even is the point of going on a third year? I'll have.. what.. one more paper? I doubt that will make me suddenly popular.

      If academia doesn't work out, I've decided I'm going to actually move somewhere I want to live (NYC for me personally) and find an industry job. That's the one thing about this process is that it has me contemplating living in rural areas for a job, where I know I wouldn't be happy at. It is somewhat liberating to know I could move almost anywhere if I don't stay in academia, but I also have a wealthy spouse, so that adds flexibility.

    9. I am also mentally preparing to look for industry jobs if I don't get anything this time. It is my third year applying and I even didn't get any phone interviews yet (I had some phone and site interviews in previous years). There is no point of doing it another year.

      There are many (well-paying) opportunities in industry and some of them even relate to doing research and allow to transfer at least some of the skills we get in academia. It is just hard to acknowledge that you probably not the top candidate and you would need give up some of the work you've been doing over the years. But I am sure once I fully acknowledge this, I can let everything go and move on to something else.

      It is important to remember that there is a life outside of the academia circle which you can also enjoy.

    11. @OP - honestly that's my expectation. I've had two phone/Skype interviews so far and have one onsite coming up, but don't expect many more as I assume that my luck has gotten me so far. my PDF goes through Jan 2021, but if nothing then I'll probably start looking at industry. Luckily my wife has a really awesome job too, so it's not the end of the world if I have to take a bit of time off. I do like the suggestion for ice cream though!

    12. Just FYI, I'd be really careful about taking time off from work and having a lapse in your employment. I have a friend in Biomedical Engineering who's postdoc ended in Europe, so he's back in the States taking care of his newborn and applying to faculty positions, while his wife works (you know, a very common occurrence in nearly every other field). In BME, you go to the BMES national conference and interface with all the search committees during the fall. While he was there, he had multiple search committees comment on how he wasn't working (even though it had only been a few weeks since he finished his postdoc), and how bad this looked. They couldn't wrap their minds around the fact that he wasn't currently in a position. I was sorta shocked they cared about this, but apparently they do???

    13. (OP here) Glad to hear that you guys are optimistic about other opportunities. Living in NYC sounds amazing! I am also not a fan of the idea of living in a small town that is completely unfamiliar to you only for the sake of an academic job. Hence, I've restricted myself to applying only to places where I really really want to live (which I realize is risky and limiting), so fingers crossed.

      @9:38, wow that's so archaic. Hopefully chemistry (vs BME) faculty are more on board with the realities of being a human being in the modern world.
