ACS Boston Career Fair: 81 jobs, 239 job seekers

Numbers reported to ACS Council on Wednesday, August 28 in San Diego, CA:
Participating employers: 31
Number of open positions: 81
Job seeker profiles: 239
So that's a pretty darn good ratio for ACS Career Fairs, as I recall, but the number of available positions seems a little low, but it is more than last year in Boston (a place, one presumes, where there are plenty of chemistry positions.)

ACS New Orleans Career Fair: 26 jobs, 422 job seekers

These numbers reported to the ACS Council this morning (data thanks to friend of the blog Chris Cramer):
Number of Job Seekers: 422*
Employers: 15
Number of Jobs: 26
Recruiter Booths: 15
Résumé Reviews: 316
Mock Interviews: 139
*There was a change to the way that job seekers were counted, so job seeker/jobs ratios can't be compared anymore.

The job seeker to job ratio is 16.2 to 1, which is the worst for quite a while. Note that, in comparing to previous years, it may be difficult. Still, a tough year for employers. (I sense this may be geography-related more than anything else, but I don't know who the employers were at this Career Fair.)

ACS San Francisco Career Fair: 145 jobs, 459 job seekers

These numbers reported to the ACS Council this morning:
Number of Job Seekers: 459*
Employers: 32
Number of Jobs: 145
Recruiter Booths: 27
Résumé Reviews: 351
Mock Interviews: 150
There was a change to the way that job seekers were counted, so job seeker/jobs ratios can't be compared anymore.

The job seeker to job ratio is 3.11 to 1; even with the change in how job seekers are counted, the ratio is about typical for an ACS Career Fair.

Daily Pump Trap: 8/4/14 edition

A few of the positions posted at C&EN Jobs this week:

Doylestown, PA: Arbutus Biopharma is one of the small companies featured in Rick Mullin's article this week on medicinal chemistry in Bucks County, PA. They're looking for an experienced medicinal chemist. (B.S./M.S./Ph.D. desired, 4-8 years experience.)

Um, what?: Bruker is looking for a NMR sales representative in Massachusetts; 3-5 years experience required. Sounds like a fair bit of travel. What's this bit?:
May be required to pass security clearance investigation.
That's... interesting.

Huntsville, AL: Nektar is a regular at C&EN Jobs; they're looking for experienced Ph.D. (?) analytical chemists. (3 openings) This is a funny juxtaposition:
The individual will have to evaluate and interpret complex data and test results (e.g., stability studies, GC/MS, LC/MS/MS studies). To qualify, you must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry or in Pharmaceutical Sciences preferably with a core expertise/experience in Analytical Chemistry/Separation Sciences/Instrument Analysis area with 2-5 years of relevant Laboratory experience in the pharmaceutical industry....
...A PhD in a scientific discipline is required. Equivalent experience may be accepted. A minimum of 2-5 years work experience in a research and/or development environment is required. Post-doctoral work may serve as experience. Exceptional non-PhDs with demonstrated capabilities and/or significant experience may also be considered.
Unclear to me, if I were a M.S. analytical chemist with 10+ years of experience, if they'd accept me. Probably not, I think.

Pearl River, NY: Pfizer is looking for an experienced scientist for research on oncological drug delivery with lipid nanoparticles.

Piscataway Township, NJ: The Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre is looking for an applications support scientist; Ph.D., 7+ years experience desired.

ACS Philly Career Fair Watch: 64 positions at the moment, with 26 of them from Gilead.

Daily Pump Trap: 7/21/16 edition

A few of the positions posted by C&EN Jobs:

Summit, NJ: Holy smokes, there are a lot of positions (ten) posted by Celgene for its New Jersey site.

La Crosse, WI: The USGS is looking for a GS-13 research chemist. An interesting note:
PLEASE NOTE:  This will NOT be a job interview.  This is to advertise the position and to make contact with potential interested candidates.
Dunno what this means, in government-speak. Offered salary: 71k - 117k.

Malvern, PA: Progenra is looking for two experienced B.S./M.S./Ph.D. medicinal chemists (1-10 years experience).

Zeroes!:  Adesis (New Castle, DE) is looking for a M.S./Ph.D. synthetic organic chemist, 0-5 years experience desired.

Sudbury, ON: SNOLAB is an unusual place (I understand they have a great big mineshaft?) They're looking for a temporary chemical analyst.

Stow, OH: Saint-Gobain is looking for an experienced B.S./M.S./Ph.D. senior research engineer for ceramics work.

San Luis Obispo, CA: Promega Biosciences is looking for an experienced M.S./Ph.D. chemist to be a manufacturing manager.

"Israel": Did not know that L’Oréal had R&D facilities in Israel; they're looking for a senior formulator.

ACS Philadelphia Career Fair Watch: 25 positions listed.

San Diego Career Fair numbers

Reported to the ACS Council this morning at the San Diego National Meeting:
Job Seekers: 739
Employers: 30
Positions: 106
Recruiters Row Booths: 13
Resume reviews: 360
Mock interviews: 217
The 7:1 ratio is a little higher than normal, but not too high (I should really track this better.)

(There was no white board this year.)

Daily Pump Trap: 8/4/15 edition

A few of the industrial positions posted on C&EN Jobs:

Good news?: Quite a few new positions, which is nice to see.

I like it: Nice to see a bunch from Celgene (10 overall, looks like). They're all in Summit, NJ; here's a research associate position and an interesting process-related "scientist/engineer" position.

The Kochtopus, reaching: Georgia-Pacific posted 11 positions, including a B.S.-level analytical chemist position and an M.S./Ph.D. "organic research chemist" position in Decatur, Georgia.

Orange County, CA: Allergan looking for an experienced B.S./M.S. synthetic chemist for a medicinal chemistry associate position. This is the new Actavis-assimilated Allergan, I believe.

Waltham, MA: Alkermes searching for a M.S./Ph.D. process position; looks to be formulation/drug delivery related? "Experience in combination products, device design control and human factor engineering is strongly desired."

Rolla, MO: Brewer Science looks for more process engineer types; this one says "Ph.D. in chemical engineering required", which is new. I wonder who their customers are?

Atlanta, GA: Not everyday that CocaCola is looking for a fermentation technologist; Ph.D. in industrial microbiology required preferred. (thanks, anon!)

ACS Boston Career Fair Watch: Last check, 96. Today: 120 positions.

Daily Pump Trap: 7/14/15 edition

A few of the positions published this week on C&EN Jobs:

Newark, DE: Air Liquide is looking for an experienced M.S./Ph.D. chemist for a senior analytical chemist position. Amused at the italicized "industrial" in the experience requirement.

Piscataway, NJ: Colgate Palmolive has a postdoctoral opening; sounds pretty interesting and the experience (oral care formulations) would certainly be unique. But why is this a "post doctor" position and not an entry-level senior scientist position?

SSSSSSmmmmokin!: RJ Reynolds Tobacco is looking for a B.S. chemist for a "Scientist III - Flavor Scientist" position. Interesting comment:
This position requires smoking to assess the sensory characteristics of cigarettes; therefore, is open to current users of tobacco products only.
I dunno, for the right job, I might be willing to take up smoking. (That's a joke, folks.)

Huh: This Bay Area position at a small company is looking for a "research associate" on C&EN Jobs, but doesn't ask for a chemistry degree.

You're back: Been a while since I've seen an Anichem ad - they're looking for B.S./M.S./Ph.D. synthetic organic chemists.

ACS Boston Career Fair Watch: 14 positions so far, including 4 at Unilever in Connecticut.

Daily Pump Trap: 3/10/15 edition

A few of the recent positions posted on C&EN Jobs:

Coventry, RI: Rhodes Technologies is looking for 2 B.S./M.S. chemists for process chemistry-related work; seems a smidge young (2-5 years experience) for some of the manufacturing-related issues they're looking to solve.

Devens, MA: Johnson Matthey Pharma Services is looking for a principal scientist for API crystallization work.

Eagan, MN: It's interesting to me that this Ecolab principal chemist position is open to B.S. chemists (as well as M.S. and Ph.D.) chemists. Nice to see.

Racine, WI: S.C. Johnson is looking for a B.S. chemist to be a senior associate in product development; 2 years experience desired.

South Plainfield, NJ: PTC Therapeutics is looking for Ph.D. organic chemists towards medicinal chemistry, looks like.

Daily Pump Trap: 7/17/14

Good morning! A few recent positions posted on C&EN Jobs:

San Francisco, CA: Nanosys is a newer company that's looking for an experienced M.S./Ph.D. organometallic chemist:
Nanosys is seeking a versatile synthetic chemist with experience in organometallics to develop new compositions for the Nanosys optical materials effort. Based on our proprietary quantum dot technology we are developing new nano-crystals and composites for integration into optical devices in partnerships with leading optical component manufacturers. Among the development goals will be novel nano-crystal synthesis optimization and integration of nano-crystals into polymer systems.
Don't know what that is, exactly, but it sounds interesting.

Hamilton, NJ: CombiPhos is looking for 2 Ph.D. synthetic chemists; I wonder what it's like to work there?

Washington, DC: Technology Sciences Group desires a B.S./M.S. chemist for TSCA consultations.

Lehigh Valley, PA: Smooth-On desires a senior polymer chemist:
You may never have heard of us, but you've seen our products at work. If you've ever been to the movies, admired a piece of sculpture, marveled at detailed architectural ornamentation or used a telephone; then you've encountered the handiwork of people who use Smooth-On rubbers, plastics, foams and other products to turn their ideas into 3-dimensional reality. The Senior Chemist will be responsible for the formulation development for Smooth-On’s Polyurethane, Silicone, Epoxy, Polysulfide and Release agent product lines.
B.S. desired, plus 7 years formulating experience. (I still don't quite know what they do, but it's an interesting intro.)

Houston, TX: Merichem desires a research technician; A.A. with 2+ years experience or B.S. with internship experience desired.

(This is really how you know the Houston market is doing pretty well by chemists, I think -- any market on either coasts would have this position pegged at B.S./M.S.-level (he asserts boldly), but in Houston, the experience level is about what an employer would really hope for/be willing to pay for.)

ACS SF Career Fair watch: 17 positions for the Career Fair, 4 for the Virtual Career Fair.

#ACSIndy Career Fair: 99 positions, 523 job seekers

Credit: @CountTheBricks
The ACS Indianapolis National Meeting has the following stats, thanks to our multiple photographers, @CountTheBricks, @rgcjk and @xtalca:

Employers: 29
Job seekers: 523
Positions available: 99
Recruiters Row: 13

That's a ratio of 5.28:1 (job seekers to position), which is slightly worse than #ACSNola at 5:1, but better than Fall 2012 (Philadelphia), 5.71:1 and Spring 2012 (San Diego), 8.76:1.

Daily Pump Trap: 8/29/13 edition

Good morning! Between August 27 and August 28, there were 64 new positions posted on the C&EN Jobs website. Of these, 3 (5%) were academically connected and 29 (45%) were from Kelly Scientific Resources.

Monroeville, PA: PPG industries is looking for a Ph.D. analytical chemist -- looks to be entry-level.

Boston, MA: I find this Wolfe Laboratories position very interesting. It's titled "Postdoctoral Scientist", with the typical project-directed language. There's also a "client interaction" section, but I suspect it's boilerplate. And then there's this:
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE BACKGROUND:
Post doctoral experience in analytical biochemistry or closely related discipline. Good understanding of excipient and ligand interaction with proteins. Evaluation of thermodynamic and kinetic models.
WHERE THIS JOB COULD LEAD:
At Wolfe Laboratories Inc., we pride ourselves on retaining and growing our team members, and ensuring they are developing to their full potential. This position can provide many different avenues for advancement, including:
Training towards becoming a Project Manager
Leader of an innovative business line
Become a Lead Technical Researcher
Managing a team of Postdoctoral employees
So, is this a postdoc* (i.e. an academic-type training position), or is it a probationary entry-level position? I'd love to know that. (There's a 'more pie' joke in here, too.)

*Note they'd like you to already have had a postdoc!

North Brunswick, NJ: Chromocell Corporation is looking for a scientific IT director and an informatician -- interesting positions. "Must be able to bridge the gap between technical IT staff and management" -- uhhhhhh.

Naperville, IL: BP Amoco would like to hire an entry-level Ph.D. analytical chemist for work on petrochemical-focused process analytical chemistry. Cool. The title is interesting: "assistant analytical chemist."

Ewing, NJ: FMC Corporation is looking for an entry-level analytical chemist (M.S., 3-5 years; Ph.D. 1+ years experience.)

Langley, VA: The Central Intelligence Agency has decided to post a Science, Technology and Weapons Analyst position on the board. I wonder how many graduate students have applied to one of these positions? (raises hand) A very interesting prequisite:
Please attach to your online application the following items:
A cover letter.
A 5-8 page analytical writing sample in your area of claimed substantive expertise, preferably unedited by others.
I think that's a pretty interesting idea, but it's quite a high barrier to entry (although there's nothing keeping you from sending in a paper of yours...)

ACS Career Fair Watch: 53 positions for ACS Indy, 7 for the Virtual Career Fair.

  • Recruiters Row Booths: 10
Virtual Career Fair (Online):
  • Job Seekers/Attendees: 552

Daily Pump Trap: 3/28/13 edition

Good morning! Between March 26 and March 27, 188 new positions were posted on the C&EN Jobs website. Of these, 5 (3%) are academically connected and 164 (87%) are from Kelly Scientific Resources.

Whoa: Just when you thought it was safe to scroll down, Kelly Scientific dumps 164 positions on C&EN Jobs. They're mostly relevantish, so that's nice.

Greensboro, NC: Syngenta Crop Protection is looking for a Ph.D. analytical chemist for analytical work towards agrichemical formulations. 65-107k offered for this position, which is quite the range.

Chicago, IL: Polyera is back, looking for Ph.D. synthetic polymer chemists; sadly, this ad (although it calls for Korean-speaking ability) is not at "romance novel" levels of enthusiasm.

Patrick AFB (: The Air Force Technical Applications Center is a regular (once a year or so) visitor to ACS Careers/C&EN Jobs. They have 4 positions posted, including one for a lead mass spectrometry scientist. All you need is knowledge of radiation detection and the ability to gain a TOP SECRET clearance.

[These must be the folks who test the samples collected by USAF planes flying around the world, looking for isotopes from nuclear detonations, yes?]

Hong Kong, China: The Hong Kong Jockey Club is looking for a M.S. chemist to test for banned substances in the racing horses. No, really. Excellence in Chinese (Cantonese, one imagines) is desired.

Pleasanton, CA: Clorox is looking for a Ph.D. analytical chemist for a 1 year postdoctoral position.

Pittsburgh, PA: PPG is looking for a Ph.D. synthetic organic chemist for a position working on "photochromic ophthalmic products."

Rolla, MO: Brewer Science, back again with 3 positions.

ACS NOLA Career Fair Watch: 56 positions for the Career Fair, 11 for the Virtual Career Fair.
