UPenn chemistry cutting admissions 20%

From last month, this news:

@PennChemistry will be admitting PhD students in the coming year, although our entering class size will be a bit smaller.

Here's a more detailed explanation.

Surprisingly, not too many other chemistry departments are doing this. (none?) Will be curious to see what happens.

  1. I can provide a bit of insight into a mid-tier chem department's admissions. Last year, about half of our admitted students were international. Between the virus's shutting down embassies and various Trump-related shenanigans, those students weren't able to enroll for the fall with spring admission also doubtful.

The consequence is that right now, we're making up for a lost class from last year.

  2. It's not clear whether departments aren't doing it, or haven't been forced to say they're doing it by admin policies handed down from on high.
