Via Forbes, these interesting factlets from the New York Fed.
The unemployment and underemployment rates for recent college graduates in chemistry was 4.3% and 42.8%. By contrast, the same rates for chemical engineering graduates was 4.7% and 17.9%. Median early career wages were $50,000 and $85,000 respectively.
It'd be interesting to see those numbers for 2026. I bet they're higher, purely based on vibes. Love to know if I'm correct.
I wonder how the heck kids are expected to choose whether science or engineering is right for them. For all I knew at that age, engineers drove trains. I never got a chance to decide whether science or engineering was right for me, and had no idea how much difference in employability there was between them, and my first job hunt was a nasty surprise after I had grown up believing the ACS's "scientist shortage" message.
