Actually, the sink trap is a great place to store stir bars. Since graduate school about 30 years ago, I've kept one of those plastic magnet sticks. Whenever I run low on stir bars, I just go around to various labs and pull out 4 or 5 from each of the sinks until I have another year's supply.
