R.B. Woodward: Where's my lightning bolts?

Someone had to do it -- it might as well be me. Here is Derek Lowe's comment on the BRSM Blog article talking about a marine natural product's structure re-assignment:
Why the vengeful spirit of R. B. Woodward hasn't appeared, shooting lightning bolts and breaking Scotch bottles over people's heads, I just can't figure.

    Interestingly Woodward flirted with a few other creative disciplines, most notably mathematics and architecture, before committing himself to chemistry. Given the current climate it is likely he may have decided on something else.

    Woodward was a genius. Whatever he touched would be gold I'm sure. He probably would not be in chemistry, but in software of some sort. It is not that chemistry is any less intellectually stimulating, it is just that chemists are not appreciated in the US anymore.
