The Science paper says "The authors declare no competing financial interests." But, in the C&EN article, Nelson says "We have filed a provisional patent and look forward to working with the chemical industry to develop practical applications.". I have no knowledge on these patent issues. Can you declare no financial interest and yet still apply for a patent?
