The 2020 Chemistry Faculty Jobs List: 526 research/teaching positions and 56 teaching faculty positions

The 2020 Chemistry Faculty Jobs List (curated by Andrew Spaeth and myself) has 526 research/teaching positions and 56 teaching assistant professor positions.

Want to add a position? Here's a Google Form to enter positions. In 2019-2020, we will be adding teaching professor positions, targeting positions that demonstrate an intention to renew permanently, 3 year terms and a promotion ladder and/or are titled "assistant teaching professor" or "associate teaching professor." As of 9/20/19, we are adding community college positions if they explicitly offer tenure.

See an error? Please contact us at chemjobber@gmail.com

On January 29, 2019, the 2019 Chemistry Faculty Jobs List had 549 positions.

Open threads: firstsecondthirdfourthfifthsixthseventh. Current: the eighth. After noon Eastern on January 28, this will be the ninth open thread.

This thread closed on Tuesday, February 25. The next thread is the tenth.

  7. I was wondering if any other experimental chemists at small PUI's would be willing to share their experience of building up their research lab? One of the universities I interviewed with gives 20k startup. Do you have any tipps on how to build a lab with that amount?
    Thanks!

    1. Synthetic organic and started at the same time as a synthetic inorganic coworker. 20k would be fine for me, but my coworker needed a glovebox which ate up almost all of their startup (and cost more than 20k). I'd start with big ticket items (depending on what else is available to you and your projects): rotovap, oven, fridge/freezer, glovebox, Schlenk line, high vacuum pump, analytical balance, fancy stirplates with thermocouple, glassware, nmr tubes/solvents. Then I'd look at whether the school has a central stockroom you can get common items from such as solvents and gloves. Last would be the chemicals you need for your specific project because you can't do anything with the chemicals without the infrastructure.

    3. Hi there, started as a TT prof at a smaller (4500 student) PUI last year.

We were given 12k, but surprisingly, access to the departmental budget for chemicals, gloves, glassware and such so its actually probably upwards of 16k.

The department has functioning GCs, LCs, NMR (60 MHz), UV-VISs and such

I spent my money on Lab balances that were my own (micro and gram scale), centrifuge, rotovap, viscometer, essentially stuff I can't have other people touching (too often) and stuff the department was missing. It was much easier to have line items approved if there already wasn't one in the building (they wanted me to use a crusty rotovap and I was like no thanks). Our school also has a lot of low income students so I built in things like ACS student membership for a few years for a few students to cover that expense (which doesn't seem like much but can be) especially because the department requires a presentation from them at the undergrad conference in the spring.

      Delete
    4. Thanks, that's very helpful! Did not think about the ACS membership for students, that's a good idea!

      Delete
    5. You can also check to see if your local ACS section has funding for students to attend conferences. Ours will pay their ACS membership and their conference registration fee!

  9. How common is it to get an offer a couple of months after an interview? I assume that a small number of candidates get many of the offers which holds up many of the universities from making more offers. Is it the case that most offers that are ultimately accepted are given much later?

Alternatively, does anyone have a sense for the frequency with which top 40 R1 schools make second or third offers after their first choices go elsewhere?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I can't speak for all schools, but know/have heard that many top R1 schools will not make offers down the list if their top choice declines. Instead they just reopen a search the following year.

      Delete
    2. It might be a couple of months. Mine worked out that way (last interview mid December, my offer mid February) as the people who were initially offered the position ended up declining, much to my delight and good fortune. If you've had a few interviews, hang in there and hope.

      Delete
    3. It is definitely fine to include interview talks as invited talks. Scoring an interview is an accomplishment, and it isn't really any different from when they bring anyone else through for a seminar.

However, I'm not pinging the search chairs with CV updates for that, seems like it might rub some people the wrong way.

      Delete
    4. @9:23 PM. I agree. Interview talks in chemistry is prestigious ain't no padding. But I will include them after all the searches are done.

      Delete
    5. @6:57pm Why would highlighting instances where Universities paid for you to travel onsite and present open seminars to the department be padding? In the context of career accomplishments an invite for a seminar presentation seems substantial

      Delete
    6. It is definitely considered padding where I am at now. If you put that in your tenure package CV you will be laughed at and not taken seriously.

      Delete
    7. Well I guess it's lucky that most people on this board aren't applying for positions that come with tenure then...

      Delete
    8. Your CV is a detailed overview of your Life's Work. Really, you shouldn't ever take things off of it. Don't put anything on your CV that you would have to take off before going up for tenure.

      Delete
    9. I guess that's an individual preference. I received just the opposite advice from folks reviewing my CV for faculty applications-like including lines such as my undergraduate poster session honorable mention and my research experiences from before undergraduate would swamp out important things that search committees reviewing hundreds of applications might miss. I suppose it depends on the context

  31. I have a question regarding negotiating at a PUI - what did you all negotiate? How long did the negotiations last for? Once the final offer was drawn & send via mail, what was the time line that was connected to that offer?
I am interviewing at another school, got an offer for a position and am wondering if it will be enough time to get the response from school2 before deciding on offer from school1. Anybody experience with situations like that?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I just asked explicitly how long I had to answer. Then I told school 2 that I have another offer, but was interested in them. And that way they could speed up on their end, if possible.

      Delete
    2. PUIs typically give you 1-2 weeks from the time the initial offer is sent. The negotiations are included in this time frame (unless you negotiate for more time, of course). The key things to negotiate are salary, start-up (and how those funds will be allocated), and timeline to make a decision. Other things to consider are course releases, money for conferences, etc.
I agree with 9:03- tell school 2 you have another offer, but that you are really interested in them and if they're interested in you, they may try to move their process faster. You can also ask School 1 for more time to make your decision.

I'm not sure if you meant he should still do it while on paternity leave for "fun", but we need to stop expecting any work (emails, writing, really any contact at all!) from people when they are on parental leave. It is not a vacation. It is in actuality a special form of hell at times. The fact that our society oftentimes refers to parental leave as time-off, a vacation, or a break is horrible and deeply inaccurate. This line of thinking needs to stop.

  45. Perhaps somebody on the other side of this would be willing to weigh in: why don't the vast majority of departments inform candidates once an offer has been made? There are only a few candidates brought on site, so what is the thinking behind not informing each of them once a decision has been reached - even if it is simply an email acknowledgement that an offer has been extended to someone other than you?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They want to keep their options open, in case top candidate rejects the offer. They can certainly let the candidates know of their rejection after someone accepts the offer, however it gets too late and everyone just moves on by then.

      Delete
    2. I suppose I still agree with 5:44 in this situation though. It won't be a secret once they make a second offer if they want to make once so what's the point of the secrecy at the time of the first offer?

    3. (at my university) It is an HR issue. There are strict guidelines for how and when you can contact applicants. One has to receive permission from HR before reaching out to a group of 'top' candidates. Individual candidates cannot be reached outside of that channel (shouldn't ask individuals about letters, more info, etc). Therefore, everything is extremely slow. There is also a possibility that a department is holding the door open to reach out to others that are not brought to campus. The permissions on communications are over the top. After the offer has been made to a candidate, there is the possibility to notify applicants. But by that time, it is so long in the process, that it (unfortunately) leads departments to not reach out at all. It isn't done on purpose or maliciously to candidate, it is having to follow strict HR guidelines so that they don't pull the search from the department...

      Delete
    4. +1 for HR issue. Not allowed to contact anyone for either a positive or negative outcome, it needs to handled by HR.

      Delete
    5. Do these HR rules differ wildly at different universities? Different states perhaps? Since clearly some universities do not have these rules and run transparent searches, or I suppose simply don't follow the rules, I'm not sure.

Smaller (like 2/3 (or even 1/2) to 3/4) except at places that have no HPC infrastructure (and sometimes even then), or possibly a department that is flush with cash but in a way that they have to give out all money equally because the people who gave them the cash think all chemists cost the same and thus said you must distribute this equally.

    3. Anon @12:55PM, do you know anything specific? I interviewed there in December and got radio silence since then. I didn't get this rejection that people here are discussing, so maybe I'm still in the running? Who knows.

    4. From 12:55, nope nothing specific - sorry! Only heard that they had not made an offer for the materials position so far. Perhaps it is still possible though. Good luck!

  69. I had one onsite interview last December and I was told by one search committee member that I was ranked as 2nd candidate last month. The department was negotiating with the 1st candidate in January. However, early last week, I received an email from the search committee chair asking me "are you still available and interested in our position? Please let me know as soon as possible!" I thought it is a promising sign and replied "yes, I am very interested...." immediately. To my disappointment, I have not received any reply since that email. I was wondering: should I contact the chair for more information? or just wait until they contact me? Thanks!

    1. i think you should stay positive, there is a good chance they are running paperwork through the upper administration. i feel like an email follow up would be appropriate in this case.
