  1. I'll break in thread #2 with a reply to the poster in thread 1 asking about that Cornell position: I don't have anything useful to say, but I am curious where those of you who are looking for MatSci positions in addition to chemistry ones do your searching. I've been looking on Academic Keys and the MRS job board primarily since there isn't a good "materials" section of HigherEdJobs. However the number of postings I've found feels so small compared to chemistry that I feel like I must be missing some. I understand that there are fewer MatSci departments across the US than Chemistry ones, so maybe it's just a matter of there being many PUI type schools for Chem and comparatively few MSE ones? Curious if there's some awesome resource I'm missing (and hopefully not too late, lol).

    1. Initial Cornell MSE poster here. I am searching primarily for MatSci positions and it has been really tricky to find them. I tend to check HigherEdJobs and Physics Today. The Cornell posting was on AcademicJobsOnline, but it is pretty sus so not sure if that's a fruitful source. Also very interested to hear if anyone has an awesome resource!

    2. What filter(s) do you use on HigherEdJobs? My recollection (which of course could be wrong) was that you'd only find MSE under "other" and then you get all kinds of crazy things like industrial engineering etc.

      Delete
    3. I use broad filters and then sort through a bunch of irrelevant postings. Definitely *not* the best method!

    4. Of course, stand-alone MSE or combination ChE-MSE or MechE-MSE departments are only going to be found within engineering schools. On HigherEdJobs, limit your searches to engineering and then use "materials science" as a keyword. Another place to look is the University Materials Council, which is highly limited but had postings I've never seen anywhere else. (BTW, the number of PUIs with materials science-focused departments can be counted on one hand: Alfred, San Jose State, Montana Tech, and UW-Eau Claire are all I know. You barely need two hands for the R2s: Boise State, IIT, Lehigh, Michigan Tech, UC-Merced and UC-Riverside. MSE departments usually don't require a large faculty for teaching. They can also be drawn from almost any discipline. Frankly, I wouldn't limit yourself to looking in MSE.)

Someone added phone interview contacts from Texas A&M chemistry to the status tracker. Were there for analytical/physical or theoretical/computational?

    1. Yale probably will take longer to go through the packages since they’re doing the anonymized proposal. I will assume they look at the proposal first.

      Delete
    2. Wow this is such a cool idea! But i assume it is hard to keep proposal anonymous because you will inevitably cite your work as a postdoc and people can infer who you are. It is a small world :)

      Delete
    3. U of Utah had an anonymous proposal (and also took like 45 days between priority date and first interview requests for what it's worth) and explicitly told you to remove references... or at least I did to ensure anonymity. I'm pretty sure it was instructed in that case.

But it looks like someone was contacted for a zoom interview on October 30. Since that was just 10 days ago I'd be shocked if they'd already moved on to sending campus invites.

      Delete
    2. I wish more people were updating the tracker. Unless R1s are generally running slower than normal? I expected to see more movement last week for R1s... though I wasn't contacted so also hoping there just wasn't much going on , sad lol.

      Delete
    3. Yeah I'm in the same boat lol, just wish things were moving faster/there was more transparency (in 5-10 years when we're chairing these search committees we can be the change we want to see in the world!). I do feel that the tracker probably catches like 90% of goings-on in terms of interviews, certainly for R1's. CJ has built an incredible ecosystem for us - If he reads this, thank you! - to chat and try to keep this process transparent.

      Delete
    4. No one is obligated to post information on the tracker, and there are legitimate reasons they may wish not to do so. It would be nice if the search committees would be more transparent about the search status, but I am not holding my breath that that will become the norm.

      Delete
    5. Not trying to be antagonistic, but what reason would one have not to post the information there? I don't see how me posting updates about my interviews could possibly hurt me.

      Delete
    6. Many years ago, a faculty candidate shared with me a social media account that was created only to harass a faculty candidate about their interview schedule. I have never forgotten that (clearly). While I am willing to stipulate that this is an extreme example, I'm not surprised that some people desire as much privacy as the process will allow.

    1. No, but someone has heard back from the inorganic and organic searches back on 11/2, so if you were hoping for those positions you might be out of luck. I applied last year to Utah, and I didn't get an official rejection until 4/17, so I think if you're waiting for anything official it might take awhile

      Delete
    2. Yeah, a lot of places don't send official rejections until their hire signs the contract.

    1. Probably not a large enough number of applicants

      Delete
    2. Anon@8:01AM here. The only problem with the "limited applicants" hypothesis is that departments at second-tier R1s were sending out rejection letters last year claiming hundreds of applicants.

      Delete
    3. Not enough = not enough that they like? Last year I had one school email saying they were canceling their search and would repost next cycle because they didn't have enough "suitable candidates." Either they're looking for something too specific (why not say that in the posting then?) or they had a lot of low-quality applications.

      Delete
    4. I hold the "hundreds of applicants" line with quite a bit of skepticism until actually proven true to me. It just seems like boilerplate language.

      Delete
    5. PI at an R1. >100 applicants is common, but I'm also skeptical of those that claim hundreds. Regardless, the majority of applicants we get are not competitive or do not fit the type of research program we are looking for.

    3. UIUC prof here: The organic area is definitely hungry, but we always bring in candidates from multiple fields and each area has been evaluating files. There have been several times in the past where we had a pressing need in one area but ended up making offers in other areas because we liked those candidates better. So don't lose hope if you're not an organic applicant.

  18. Stony Brook has pushed back the priority date twice now. Definitely not feeling positive about that application.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To give a little perspective as someone who has served on multiple faculty searches (not at Stony Brook), pushing back the deadline due to insufficient suitable candidates does NOT mean that you're out of luck. For example, they might have 3 amazing candidates (hopefully including yourself!), but they might want to do Zoom interviews of 10 and they just don't have close to 10 candidates who meet the criteria they're looking for. Remember that departments are not just looking for good candidates - they're looking for good candidates who would accept an offer if they received one. Nobody wants a failed search, and part of the strategy to not have a failed search is to have several good candidates so that there are other options if the first person doesn't accept their offer. Alternatively, a good candidate might not be invited to an on-site interview if they come off as disinterested in their Zoom interview (too high a risk that the candidate would reject an offer), or they might not look so good anymore after a Zoom interview for other reasons, so it's important to have a large enough pool of candidates who look good on paper.

    3. Their senior hire position in synthetic chemistry has changed dates. Original priority date was 11/12, moved to 11/18, and now is 11/30.

      Delete
    4. For such a specific search (senior hire, narrow scope), seems possible the applicant pool isn't sufficiently large to satisfy state hiring practice requirements? Insight from a neighboring state... I wouldn't take it to reflect on the applicants who have submitted so far.

      Delete
    2. I believe this came up on the previous page of comments - that term can mean a lot of things. At my institution, shortlisted is how we classify in our system applicants that we want to review (i.e. not triaged). If Oregon uses a similar system, I wouldn't expect to hear back within 2 weeks, but 6 is getting up there.

    7. @2:21 PM is it specific for Oregon or the overall battle?

      Delete
    8. @2:24pm Yes @2:44pm Not sure. But I guess an asstprof would apply for more than one place if he/she wants to move

      Delete
    9. I know of several assistant and associate profs that apply to assistant openings if they want to 1) move or 2) get a raise at their current institute. It is normal.

      Delete
    10. @3:07 PM if the person did apply for Oregon, that likely explains why there has been no updates for 5 weeks. The hiring dept might want to review the moving faculty first. Once the person accepts the offer then all shortlisted would have a chance to enter a rejection to the tracker LOL

    11. @3:07pm This is worrisome, like what @4:47pm said.

    1. "you guys are getting Zoom interviews?"

      Delete
    2. faculty here. many schools have search committee members go through anti-bias training. non-verbal cues during zoom interviews are highlighted as one of the things to keep in check. also asking follow up questions. trying to avoid these things definitely can make the zoom interview feel more sterile / disinterested.

      Delete
    3. Last year I saw two versions of this. For a few, it was obvious they're trying to be fair and follow the same set of questions, but I felt they were overly cold to the point of seeming disinterested. Others followed a script but were more friendly and the conversation/questions didn't feel forced. I ended up canceling an on-site interview somewhere because of how off the vibes felt during the Zoom.

      Delete
    4. I would like to add how one place started off. Camera went on. The chair quickly said everyone's name who was in the room, and then said, "Let's begin. What's your first grant." Talk about diving into the deep end. The better Zooms began with a question like why I was interested in the position/school.

      Delete
    5. At @737, interesting. One the surface that is certainly a very intimidating question. On the other hand, it's a very *deep* question; it gauges the "impact" of your work, and more importantly how you are going to keep the ship afloat. I've been told that you should start applying for grants on *day 1* of the job. It's like a small start up, where we are the CEO/CFO/CTO all rolled into one. I would consider it as a chance to think deeply about "who cares and why". Yea, it's a scary question, but it does force you to become a better at thinking about funding, especially in an age of tight funding.

      Delete
    6. I totally expected the question, got it from everyone I Zoomed with, and had a good answer (I did an on-site+chalk talk the day before). It was their tone that ruined it (note I didn't use a ? in my quote because when they asked it was more of a demand). Too much poker face is off-putting, especially when I had other much nicer interactions over Zoom.

    2. Sorry to say this, but if it's been a month since you had the Zoom interview then you didn't make the cut to the on-site visit.

      Delete
    3. At least, you're not in the top bunch. At the Zoom stage, most institutions don't notify candidates that they didn't make the cut because there's no going back after that (that's our HR hiring rule). People cancel on-sites more often than you'd think, and if you've already rejected people then you have nobody you can fill the slot(s) with.

    3. I interviewed SLU several years ago. They reposted the position when onsite candidates were confirmed. These candidates were asked to reapply on SLU career website

  43. Some schools list candidate seminars on their schedules and other don't. Do you think departmetns have policy or it just comes down to whoever updates websites and happens to put everything there?

    1. If it's not a formal rule, search committees will decide themselves how much to advertise. It's most common to keep it private (just the department will know about the talk). Often, the interviewees don't even know who else is being considered.

    2. My department had them on the public website, but they were lumped in with all the other seminars and not identified as candidate seminars. Privacy wasn't an issue for postdocs openly looking, but a current PI looking to leave their university would have had plausible deniability as a regular seminar speaker.

  44. Any updates on the UC-Irvine pharmaceutical sciences search, such as the number of phone interviews and potential campus invitations?

    1. From the Future PI spreadsheet: 2 positions to fill, > 200 applications received, 10% in phone interviews. I guess they might no more than 10 will be invited to campus.

    2. This hire seems odd; initially, they seemed interested in energy or materials modeling, but during the interview, they mentioned a preference for biomedical candidates. It's puzzling why they invited candidates to campus in the first round.

    3. I'm more biophysical than bioanalytical. Good to hear that they hire irrespective of background! Thanks for letting me know that you found review started Dec. 15. Seems like a long time between priority date and review...but maybe they pushed the date and I just didn't notice. Good luck!!!

  51. I am already a tenure track faculty at a PUI and applying to R2/R1. I just got a recent small external grant. Should I use this opportunity to follow up with some of the university I have applied to? I got a good independent publication/presentation record in just 2 years in PUI.

    1. I definitely think it is a good opportunity to follow up and update your CV. Congratulations.

    2. I don't think it will matter much unless the grant is of the federal NSF/NIH type.

    3. Just gave a Zoom at a R2. They seem very interested on the grant and mentioned these sorts of grant always good as a starting point. Not sure about R1.

    1. Sorry to say, but if it's been a month since your Zoom then you probably didn't make the cut for an on-campus visit. Most schools, especially PUIs like Stetson, move quickly after Zoom interviews to campus invites.

  55. Question for everyone. Had an on-site a couple of weeks ago. Mentioned to a few people in the department where else I was interviewing (because they asked). Several of the faculty I met with wished me good luck with the rest of my interviews either in person or in replies to my thank-you emails. Does this mean anything, or are they just being nice human beings and I need to touch some grass? Thanks!

    1. They know we all apply to a bunch of places, and if they interviewed you, they would know that others will also be interested. I wouldn't read too much into it other than they're decent people. By the on-site stage, I think both sides are trying to impress.

  56. Anyone gotten any news from Wake Forest for the Biochemistry position?
