    1. Last year, Utah and Rochester both started inviting remote and/or onsite interviews in early December, so it is probably still early for these two schools.

    1. If it has been several weeks, I would guess you have been selected into at least the long list. If they weren't selective, they would have requested letters much earlier.

    5. Are the above discussions for physical chemistry? I got contact for zoom from MRSEC not chem, I am actually not 100% sure if it is the materials chemistry position (chem department) or a mse position I applied last cycle. Can someone confirm? Thx!

    6. I think it is the Materials Chemistry hiring. I also receive an email from them for scheduling Zoom interview.

    9. Just answered my own question. Brandeis had 2 searches this year: exp. Pchem and materials. I was the original commenter and received a request for instrumentation info for the pchem search. I have not heard about a zoom interview (and it seems no one from the pchem search has?)

    1. 6-8 zoom -> 3 onsite

      Delete
    2. Eh, it very much depends. Some schools have a lot more than 3 on-site candidates. UIUC last year had 15 on campus interviews.

      Delete
    3. I agree it varies widely. I've heard of typically ~15-25 zoom interviews and 3-6 on site

      Delete
    4. I heard similar numbers too: 3-5 on-sites for each opening and some schools can hire multiple so they interview 10+ people.

  7. Any insight on chances of still being contacted for an on-site after others have already been contacted? Specifically wondering about BU for organic.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't know about BU specifically. Accordingly to last year's tracker and open thread, several schools contacted for phone interviews on different days (could be a month apart). Don't give up hope. While you are waiting for this one, you may hear from an even more ideal position.

      Delete
    2. last year, BU invited 3 candidates to onsite before thanksgiving and later invited another 4 for the second round of onsite.

      Delete
    3. Was it because offers were made and declined? Or was there no obvious reason? I am asking in general, not just BU last year.

      Delete
    4. It could have been an offer was declined or they could have been looking to fill more than one position - we don't really know, and it could be different this year

      Delete
    2. I could be wrong, but I think people add universities to the tracking list and then don't put a contact or rejection date as a way of asking if others have heard anything

  30. How long after zoom interview do you hear back for campus interview contact? Is it okay to contact the chair if two weeks have passed since the zoom interview?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you look at the status tracker from last year, the time between remote and onsite interviews varies from 1 week to 3 months, with an average of maybe 3-4 weeks. I feel the chair cannot tell anything meaningful if they have not met to make a decision.

      Delete
    2. Thank you very much for the reply!! In my case the chair is in the committee and was present in the zoom interview. Also regarding the tracker, does phone interview contact imply the date you actually gave the interview or is it the date you are asked to schedule the interview (because u r generally given a two week window for scheduling). Similarly, for campus interview contact. Onsite interviews can be couple of months later but candidates might be contacted like a week after zoom interview - sorry the for long message - the waiting time is stressful - it's better to know whether I made it or not.

      Delete
    3. I believe in the tracker sheet people put the date that they are contacted. Not the date of actual interview happening.

      Delete
    4. I've heard (and experienced) the time period between zoom and campus interview contact varies dramatically, especially depending on the type of schools. Some schools will need to get approval to bring people on-site and it will take time to go up the approval ladder (upwards of a month). Other schools have contacted people the day after the zoom interview to invite them onto campus. It is definitely a fair question to ask during your zoom interview what the committee's timeline is or when you should expect to hear from them. If you're two weeks out from your zoom interview and haven't heard anything yet, I would give another week or so simply because you may have been one of the first zoom interviews. Regardless, I agree 100% with you in that the wait is incredibly stressful. Best of luck!

      Delete
    5. Thank you! Best of luck to everyone!

      Delete
    6. From my own experience, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, and 3 months

      Delete
    7. A search committee will only get a limited number of spots to bring people to campus, so if you had a phone interview and don't hear anything they might have invited their top choices to campus, but you could still be in the running if none of those work out. That is why you might have a phone interview and then not hear anything from a school for a long time. They can't tell you a definite no until the hire signs on the dotted line. If they tell you no - they can't reconsider you for that search and would have to wait to reconsider you until after the search is failed.

  31. Thank you! Best of luck to everyone!

    2. Thank you. I spoke to few professors about it and they did not really say positive things about the transition from PUI to R1. Also, there are many R1 schools I haven't heard back from yet, which is making it even harder to make a decision.

    5. One thing to consider: will you enjoy the PUI job enough to excel at it and also be happy with your life? As other people have said, there is a lot of luck involved in moving between universities, even R1 to R1 or PUI to PUI. It's even harder to change school types (in either direction, since the places where you demonstrate excellence are very different). Are you just going to feel unfulfilled at the PUI unless you "move up", or can you believe in the mission of the school enough to inspire the students to do the research that might let you move to an R1?

  70. Hi all. What is the ball park figure for the start up budget for R2 schools? I was asked about my startup expectations in one of the interviews at R2 school and I was not really sure about it. Any information would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This threw me off a lot when I was first asked for startup expectations at R2 schools so I'm glad you're wiser than I and decided to ask! I have been told by a few R2 schools anywhere from 200-500K (I imagine there is some flexibility here, just not as much as an R1). However, a couple of key things to consider are 1) smaller programs tend to be much more communal regarding instrumentation so you may not have to buy every piece of instrumentation you expect to, 2) groups are much smaller so even if you propose the typical three projects with three aims each, you likely won't have the personnel to accomplish everything you propose so you won't be spending as much on supplies, 3) postdocs and technicians are not typically budgeted for and departments can support most students at an R2 with teaching assistantships so you're not paying for personnel during the academic year, and 4) many R2 caliber schools are eligible for R15 funding which is ultimately a less competitive pool of money with much higher funding rates than R01 grants and there you can almost double your startup with an early grant funded. All of that said, you don't want to undersell your research or your needs to run a successful lab. When I submitted estimated itemized startup needs, I listed everything I would need equipment-wise and prefaced the budget by saying that it was made under the assumption that I would be the first lab in the building with zero existing infrastructure. Departments seemed to appreciate that as they were able to say "we have X in my lab so you wouldn't have to buy one right away."

      Delete
    2. When approaching schools where there could be a wide/uncertain range, consider presenting your "three projects" as stackable if you can. "Project's 1 startup would be X. With an additional Y of startup, or after receiving Y in funding if that startup is not available, Project 2 would be underway." Or within projects, have two levels - the "basic, must-have" and then the "with a higher startup/already available equipment, or else with my first grant..."

      Delete
    3. I think R2 schools top out around $500 K. I had an offer from an R2 at right about this amount and an offer from an R1 that was slightly higher (which I think is low for an R1). I agree with the 12/14 9:00 PM comment. I applied last year and presented my research plan as scalable: $200 K gets X, $500 K gets Y, and $1 M gets Z. I think it was a successful strategy since I was ultimately offered positions at all categories of institution (PUI, R2, and R1) using essentially the same research plan for all my applications.

      Delete
    4. What do you think is the typical range for start-up for an R1?

      Delete
    5. I think the range for R1 start-ups is huge, going from about $500 K at the low end to $2 M+ at the high end. Somewhere around $1 M is probably typical. What I didn't fully appreciate until I applied is just how large a range of institutions the R1 category includes. Harvard and Princeton are in there alongside the University of Maine and University of Southern Mississippi. Very different institutional profiles!

    2. Thanks. I feel like that's reasonable. Imaging if you need to draw on the board, the pace might be a little too slow, right?

    3. I was told I could have a few overview slides but that most should be on the board for a biochem interview.

    4. pchemist here- mine have always used slides. I got the impression that many depts moved this way during the (remote) covid years and haven't gone back. when in doubt though, you can always ask a search chair about the expectations

    5. 10:58, is the biochem interview from medical school or chemistry department? I've heard someone interviewing for medical schools, some still use white board (not yet heard so from people in chemistry/chemE).

    6. It was a med school department.

    7. Most interviews I did at research-intensive places used slides, but at one place it was just the board (biochem). Ask for clarification from the search committee if you are uncertain. A talk at the board requires different (and imho more time-consuming) preparation, and I think you'll want as much advance notice as possible to comfortably prepare.
