The 2020 Chemistry Faculty Jobs List: 541 research/teaching positions and 70 teaching faculty positions

The 2020 Chemistry Faculty Jobs List (curated by Andrew Spaeth and myself) has 541 research/teaching positions and 70 teaching assistant professor positions.

Want to add a position? Here's a Google Form to enter positions. In 2019-2020, we will be adding teaching professor positions, targeting positions that demonstrate an intention to renew permanently, 3 year terms and a promotion ladder and/or are titled "assistant teaching professor" or "associate teaching professor." As of 9/20/19, we are adding community college positions if they explicitly offer tenure.

    1. Theoretically maybe, but if you need to have PhD chemistry students, I think you need to look at a different institution. Consider that if you are the only PI who can offer a PhD in the department, it isn't going to be easy(possible) to recruit students for that. Also maybe consider your ability to work with undergrads and masters students. At many established PhD institutes, masters and undergraduate research are important to your research career. Honestly, there are already more places/positions willing to offer a PhD in chemistry than there are quality student who want to pursue a PhD.

  17. I did one onsite interview in a R1 University in the middle of December and did not hear back until half a month ago (Feb.10), the search committee chair emailed me asking "are you still available and interested in our position?" I replied to him saying I am very interested. I thought this is a promising sign, so did my friends. However, I did not hear back since then. Yesterday I emailed the chair again for updates but did not get reply. What does this mean? So frustrating.

    9. Why should you feel lucky that you are not working with them? What, exactly, did "they" do wrong? They asked if the candidate was still interested, but went with a different candidate. They also communicated with the candidate to let them know. On this site, schools get hammered for no information, and now because they did give information. They asked if still interested, didn't promise anything.

  19. I have just received a verbal offer from one school I really like, but the offer letter will not be generated until I finish the second visit and start-up negotiation. My best guess is that I probably have to make a decision, if things go well hopefully, in six to eight weeks. I am wondering what is a gentle way to ask other schools which are also my favors (there are five) about my application status? Two of them might have offered someone else first (but completely silent to me), one of them is still in the progress of interviews, and two of them are still reviewing materials (due to a really late deadline). I am wondering if you could probably shared some experience about effective communication in my situation. Should I gently "push" them to accelerate the progress or should I simply inform them that I could probably have a deadline? Thank you!

    1. Similar situation... I sent an email to the two departments I was most interested in saying that another program has approached me and I don't want to string anyone along in this process so if you could let me know where I stand that would be awesome. I heard back from one of the two I contacted to be told I was #2. So it does get their attention if you are in the running I think. The other place I am probably not being considered so they have not responded.

  23. Has the peak of offers came already? at what point in time (end of march?) should i give up hope?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm in contact with several of the places I interviewed (poking them since I have an offer elsewhere). Many of them still have not made decisions on their first choice offer yet, so it's not a lost cause yet.

By the end of March is probably a good cutoff, though, for most chem positions that most first-choice offers have gone out. Dunno about ChemE, etc.

      Delete
    2. Not to give any false hope but... I applied to a bunch of schools Fall 2018 but the job I ended up taking I sent my app in late March 2019 and visited in late April and accepted in May. I also received an offer from another school in late May, after I had accepted the other. You never know. Note these were a PUI and R2 so their schedules may be a little bit less rigid.

Best of luck to you regardless.

      Delete
    3. Indeed, and as Anon 1:03 said, a lot of these places only send out their first choice offers by the end of March. Many R1s give their first choices a lot of time, sometimes several months, before they move down the line to make a second-choice offer.

It's frustrating, because there are always people with several offers that tie up several places while they decide. The departments are somewhat in a bind, though, given the incoherent hiring process, since if they place an early deadline they may not get their top choice, or their top choice may accept and then leave three months later if they get a better offer elsewhere.

It's a bad system all around, but it's the one we're stuck with. In general, I'd say you should reach out to search committee chairs if you want an update, just to see where you stand. Sometimes they won't be able to say anything, other times they may have useful insights.

    2. If you need a second visit in order to gather more information and make a good decision, let the department chair know that! It certainly doesn't hurt to ask. It can show that you are really serious about considering the place and making sure it's a good fit.

      Delete
    3. I agree with 10:58 AM. I don't see why you can't ask about a second visit. The worst they can say is no, but I think a second visit to see lab space and talk a bit more about start up details is normal.

    6. They didn't offer me the second visit, they kind of just ignored that part of my email. I did make a point about wanting to see the lab space, they haven't figured out exactly what lab space will be assigned so that might be part of the reason.

  30. It is hard to quantify without bumper cars going, but does it seem like everything has been about a month slower this cycle compared to ones in the past? Does anyone have an idea of why things seem to be so slow this year? My thought was the prevalence of the phone interview this year. It seems like many departments did phone interviews this year compared to last year (this is from talking with people in last years cycle). It seems like March is late to to have so many positions left to be announced...

  32. Friends, any advise for a candidate going for lecturer position onsite interview. what questions one can ask the dean and faculties. Need to give a teaching demo..I would appreciate any help.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For questions I think its important to address the use or planned use of technology in the classroom. I was told at one school 'this is a chalk and chalk board kind of place' where at another they were planning on flipping classrooms and recording lectures as well as having new profs teach online.

Also ask or check in about their resources for educators such as a center for teaching and learning or institute on education that you can partner/get professional development opportunities.

The other big thing is do they offer a tenure style track for your position, or what the plan for advancement is.

As for a teaching demo, go slow, be yourself, don't feel like you have to cover as much or in depth material as in a lecture. They mostly want to see you can explain a topic, answer question, are relatively organized, and approachable. I also liked having an example of an assignment to pass out at then end.

Also be prepared to both teach with chalk and board OR with slides. Schools may have a preference so ask. I showed up to a community college interview expecting to write on the board and they showed me to the laptop...better be over prepared than not.

      Good luck!

  48. So how's this impending recession likely to impact next hiring cycle?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Depends on the state governments for many of these places, but overall, not good. States with legislators of certain persuasions are very likely to cut budgets. Many (even top) departments in certain states hired almost no junior faculty from ~2011-2014 or so. Then there is a bit of a backlog and the 2014-2016 people are competing against people that should have been hired in 2013-2014 and have longer CVs. It then perpetuates forward.

      Delete

  55. I hope you guys have advice for my situation: chemistry is a secondary field for me and I didn't get any offers in this cycle. I've been more successful in what I consider my primary field, scoring three on-campus interviews, including one that would be a dream come true. However, my primary field runs their searches late relative to chemistry and two of my interviews are yet to come.

Today I just got word that one of those interviews (the *dream* one) has been converted to a fully virtual experience because of the COVID outbreak. I know the usual advice for remote interviews, but this is the whole thing done remotely: meetings with faculty and students, research talk, chalk talk, etc. I am freaking out over here because there is no way for me to do well remotely. Skype meetings are awkward for me on a good day.

    Please help.

    1. I bought a decent webcam for remote interviews and it makes a huge difference for me compared to the one built into my laptop (quality, control of angle etc), I either put it on top of a good desktop monitor or connect it and my laptop to a TV. I also reserved conference rooms with big TVs at my institute for my remote interviews. Other than that... practice helps?

      Delete
    2. For interviews I find/have been told that standing helps. It keeps your energy up, so if you can go for it. Otherwise, good luck!

      Delete

      Delete
    4. Do you have friends you can practice with? Just call them up on Skype or WebEx and have them pretend to be professors/students/etc. Also, if the whole campus is closed, it is likely everyone will be calling from home, so be prepared to have random interruptions (schools and daycares are closing so people are trying to work while taking care of kids). If this happens, do not act annoyed or agitated; just laugh at the situation and try to move conversation along. Also, record yourself presenting your talks and try to improve them if you see a certain delivery is not good for the virtual format. Good luck!

    1. I think the general consensus is that you don't follow up unless you have new information to provide. However, I do understand the endless anxiety of not knowing. I say one month after the last candidate would be a reasonable time to follow up, if you must.

      Delete
    2. Don't worry, if they want to make you an offer, they will contact you, they will not forget about you. Don't contact them unless you absolutely have to. One of my colleague was a top one candidate at a R1 and was contacted more than 2 months after his interview!

It is a theory position in a major state university, but the offer is still waiting for the approval from the Dean's office and I have not seen the document yet:-( Fingers crossed for everyone here, including OP and myself.

  70. I applied one position (not postdoc) in a national lab in early February and I have not heard back yet. I asked the search chair almost 3 weeks ago and he said "no any decision made yet". I was so anxious and pressed recently because I have to work from home due to the COVID outbreak. I was wondering: is it common that National lab always take such long time to make a decision in their hiring? Thanks.

    1. Yes and no. It really depends and it is probably mostly up to the group leader, some division leaders and associate laboratory directors are more involved than others. The hiring process is completely different from academia. The pandemic is probably also slowing the process, several are moving to "minimum safe" operating mode.

    1. While this is a panic-inducing list, there are schools on that list that have made offers. So I don't think it is a blanket freeze on everything.

    1. They had an offer out to their first candidate and they were waiting to hear back from them, but seemed like that candidate might turn them down. I was the second choice and they were keeping me warm, but I removed myself from consideration because I had already accepted at another institution. That is last I heard prox. 3 weeks ago (which feels like a million years ago). So, maybe?

    1. Had skype interview about 3 weeks ago, right before COVID-19 went viral in US (pun intended?), and have heard radio silence ever since. Would like to know if they have moved on with search, or if the position is still available, etc.

    2. What position was that for? They had on-campus interviews in February. Did they go back to the pool?

    3. Skype interview was for Orgo/MedChem… I'm guessing on-campus Feb interviews were for synthesis/materials/chem. biol.?
