Ivory Filter Flask: 3/6/12 edition

Good morning! Between February 28 and March 5, there were 10 new academic positions listed on the ACS Careers website. The numbers:

Total number of ads: 10
- Postdocs:
- Tenure-track faculty: 8
- Temporary faculty:
- Lecturer positions: 2
- Staff positions: 0
- Ratio of US/non-US positions: 9/1

Milledgeville, GA: Georgia College is search for a M.S.-level educator to take a chemistry lecturer position.

Okanagan, BC: The University of British Columbia at Okanagan is searching for a professor of organic chemistry. From a friend's experience, I can tell you that they hire Americans. They have graduate students, incidentally.

Stephensville, TX: Tarleton State University desires a Ph.D. chemist to be a professor of environmental chemistry.

Vy Dong and you: The University of California - Irvine is hiring lecturers with "potential security of employment." You've always wanted to teach undergrads at one of the best programs in the country, right?

  1. UCI does seem to offer lecturer security. I was in grad school there with a woman who started as an undergrad, continued as a grad student, and afterwards stayed on as a gen chem instructor. She has been there at least 15 years by now...

    1. Honestly, although Irvine is a nice city, that sounds like a really terrible idea. In the event that she gets canned, I imagine any job hunt afterwards will be really challenging, her CV will show a total lack of independence or willingness to change. I also wonder how her colleagues treat her, she went from being a subordinate to being one of their peers.
