Paula Stephan at the Spring National Meeting at ACS

Paula Stephan, the author of "How Economics Shapes Science" (and noted STEM surplus crisis skeptic) spoke yesterday at ACS Dallas. Here's Carmen Drahl's Storified tweets of her talk. Gotta love this comment by Prof. Stephan:
"Take note grad students- re jobs "Advisors have incentives to tell you everything's fine." -Stephan"
Very true.

  1. I bet there were a lot of uncomfortable professors in that lecture. I'm surprised the ACS snipers didn't take her out.

    1. Clearly the fact that she wasn't shot is an indication that there's a shortage in snipers and we should be lobbying Congress to fund training for more of them.

    2. Everyone knows that the Scout Sniper Course is boring and not hands-on enough. The pipeline for snipers is so leaky, the training loses 60% of the candidates!

  2. I'm guessing that there wasn't a single one there.

  3. Since I was there I can attest that the audience was a very friendly one. No snipers, only lots of concerned but still optimistic students. Even the few professors seemed to silently nod along.

  4. I wonder if the ACS muckity-mucks were listening. It sounds like a great talk.

  5. Shouldn't your post say "STEM deficit skeptic"?
