ACS Career Fair numbers from #ACSSanDiego

Credit: @UnstableIsotope
Via @Unstable Isotope, the numbers from the Spring #ACSSanDiego convention's Career Fair:

Employers: 31
Positions available: 85
Job seekers: 775

For comparison's sake, here's all the ones that I've collected since '09. None of the numbers are pretty.
85 positions is the lowest number of positions since I've been collecting data (since spring '09, with the exception of fall 2009.) It's also the lowest absolute number of employers, just edging out 31 employers at the Spring 2009 conference in Salt Lake City.

As UI mentioned in a following tweet, the ratio is 9.12 job seekers to 1 position, which is the worst ratio that I have records for (just edging out the 8.76:1 job seekers/position ratio at the 2010 Spring ACS conference in San Francisco.)

Best wishes (and my sincerest prayers) for the job seekers out there.

  1. If (and only if) every one of these positions gets filled by one of the 775 job seekers, each person's chance of landing a job is 11%. Tell ACS to publish that number next time they brag about unemployment in chemistry being low and salaries being on the upswing.

  2. I think it's more like the case of employers not giving a hoot about ACS.

    1. So if you were a big company that didn't want to go through ACS, where would you go?

    2. I would post it on my careers page. You don't think it would do the trick?

    3. Yeah, you're right. Well, yet one more thing to measure...

  3. Due to the obvious shortage of chemists, I think we need more H1b visas.

  4. Gotta love that ghetto dry-erase board...can the ACS Career Fair afford to use anything other than FADED GREEN markers?!

    1. Anon, your comments are as much of a ritual as the picture.

    2. Aw, am I that predictable? Anyway, keep up the great work, CJ. Your blog (even with the DOOM tags) provides a nice distraction on days when I'm particularly disenchanted with chemistry.

    3. Give the credit where the credit is due - this is the only fair stats you'll ever get from the ACS.

  5. I expect the long runnung chemistry list of complaints to grow after this week is over...

It is a good dumping ground for negative comments that would otherwise be forced to appear in chemistry blogs. If only they allowed posting pictures...

  6. Keep in mind that one of the largest divisions in ACS--and arguably the largest in terms of available jobs is the analytical division and they basically gave up programming at the spring meeting because they have their own giant meeting with Pittcon that all the industry and academic people go to. I didn't go this year (it was last week in Philly) and while they don't have a formal career fair, there is a hell of a lot of informal networking that goes on. I know a number of people who have gotten jobs at Pittcon via pre-arranged or on the spot spontaneous interviews that were conducted.
