So it's been a while since we've done one of these. Have some good news, job-wise? Have some other good news? Let's have it!
I'll start: my alma mater did not embarrass themselves this bowl season!
(Apologies for the happy music*; back to my normal pessimism and and an excellent dialogue with Not the Lab on "Is Graduate School in Chemistry Bad for Your Mental Health?" on Monday.)
*UPDATE: Milkshake notes the original lyrics were a lot less cheery.
After a year of waiting, I'm dumping a low-paying, soft-money CRO gig for an hard-money job working for Uncle Sam (not the commenter). Couldn't be happier.
ReplyDeleteWell done. Enjoy your new position!
DeleteI have a faculty position lined up. Super happy about that :).
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
DeleteCJ, in this grad school & job market context, I think you would be delighted to know that "Roll Out The Barrel" - a wartime pop tune - caught on only after being given new cheerful lyrics. The original, deeply depressing Czech pre-war version of this polka was called "Škoda lásky" (Wasted Love) and goes like this:
ReplyDeleteWasted love that I gave you
Wasted tears that I cried out for you
My youth gone away like a dream
All that's left in my heart - only a memory
C-jabber, are you an ex-duck? The twitter picture & bowl comment are birds of a same feather...
ReplyDeleteIn six months, I will graduate with my PhD in Chemistry. I have a promising interview next week, for a job that will allow me to pay my bills and then some. I've learned to move on from the negativity and craziness of grad school and look forward to starting a family with someone I love. After all the shit I've been through in the last five years, I know that I'm one of the lucky ones and that happiness is a choice. My decisions are mine alone, and I'm dealing with them in the best way that I can.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
