ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have any experience as an American applying to Canadian positions? I know most of them have an explicit statement on their posting specifying that Canadian citizens/permanent residents will be given priority. Does this requirement even make it worth applying to as an American, i.e. will I even be considered, given that the job market to begin with is extremely competitive?
ReplyDeleteAs a Canadian faculty member at a Canadian university, albeit someone who has not yet been on a search committee, I can say that hasn't come up in any of our searches at the interview stage. It could be that the search committee does give priority when deciding who to interview, however we certainly have interviewed American citizens at my institution, and do have American citizens on our faculty. Having interviewed both in Canada and the USA, I can say that a big difference is in how start-up works. At most Canadian schools, I think you would be laughed at if you asked for half a million in start-up, however you need to consider CFI, and the fact that NSERC funding is ostensibly easier to get than NSF and NIH funding (though there has been a disturbing downward trend in both success and amounts, that our newish government still ahs not corrected).

ReplyDeleteI have noticed that it is now somewhat common to include in application requirements a statement to the effect of how the candidate will foster and support diversity on campus/in the classroom/in the lab. I want to state outright that I am fully in favor of statements like this, and it's past overdue that we as scientists think about these issues in order to get a broader cross-section of society interested (and retained) in our profession.
That being said - I am a white, heterosexual male, and as such I feel a bit awkward about these statements. Would it go over weirdly if I outright state that I am aware of my privilege? How do I get across that I actually do care about this stuff and I'm not just "checking the boxes" of saying the right things? And furthermore - if you're teaching sophomore organic chemistry, just how do you support diversity in the classroom anyway?
My wife taught general chemistry for non-majors - this amounts to be the course for healthcare-associated professions, preparation for nursing, dental hygiene &c. We live in the Southern US. The metric system comes up in the lecture. Again, it's the South, where in some places decent schooling is hard to come by. One kid (she was black) comes up and says very drily, if she had been to a white school she would have encountered metric units there. It helps to be aware of these issues.
DeleteI'm in the same boat. The advice I've been given is to highlight the work you have done previously to increase diversity, equity and inclusion. Most campuses have initiatives you can get involved with to do this sort of work as a grad student/postdoc.

My personal take is to take particular anecdotes from what you've done that fosters diversity (outreach, mentoring, class strategies) and talk about what you feel like central challenges and ways you work with them are.
Other people take different strategies.
You can also look at it as diversity of learning styles. Read some papers from education journals. Research the latest literature about how to be an effective teacher to people of all backgrounds and cite them. I did this, believe it or not, as a woman and a lesbian - so checking two boxes, these are also awkward to write. Talking to people on search committees, they are more looking that you are not going to be an ass that thinks all students should be exactly like you in learning style and outside obligations - and if not, they just aren't cut out to be a chemist.
DeleteTrust me, we all struggle with this part of the application. I had the opportunity to read others' statements as part of a search this year and they were varied… but they all seemed to tell some narrative about how they fostered diversity. Just as with teaching statements: write them honestly, don't write them thinking you can predict what the search committee wants to hear.

ReplyDeletei emailed the chair and was told it was still valid on ~8/9/2017 BUT they've used the *exact* same posting for many years. Also, a few of my friends have made it all the way through in person interviews with no offers being extended to anyone. I have no idea what i'm talking about for the most part, but i assume they dont actually have the $ to hire anyone and are going fishing.
DeleteLake Forest is not actually a joint appointment. The hire will sit in the chem department, and the chem department recommends tenure etc. But the biology department has a few members on the search committee - but a minority.
ReplyDeleteIt's part of their expanded biochemistry program. They hired a bio-organic chemist last year that then shares/splits teaching with this new hire to work towards developing a biochemistry program.

ReplyDeleteI'm a Canadian citizen looking to apply to research-intensive schools in the U.S, but I find the visa information confusing. Do I need to take steps before applying?
Nope, nor can you easily apply for a Visa without a job offer, so whichever school wants to hire you would have to sponsor your H1B visa (downside here is easier to hire an American). As a Canadian you can benefit from TN visas, but those need to be renewed every year and can, in theory be denied (they're meant to be 'temporary'.....). Once you've got a job offer you can (likely for a PhD scientist, assuming you have a good publication record---you wouldn't get hired without this anyway) apply for H1B under class O, which can speed things up dramatically.

ReplyDeleteI tend to download, slowly sort through it (reading ads, etc) to whittle down to applicable posts. However, two weeks later when I go to download it again, I end up repeating much of the slow filtering.
If I could just use whatever current list version with a comparison tool to generate a difference list with only new entries, I'd be very happy.
If each row had an entry for "date-added," the problem would solve itself, but I think the list maintainer does enough work already.
If you check frequently, the new posts are highlighted in yellow. I just add those to my personal spreadsheet.

DeleteI just download the newest copy of the jobs list as an Excel file every couple of weeks. Then, I copy the entire new list of jobs below the old one and filter for duplicates.
I then select the entire data set and use Conditional Formatting, setting the colour of the rows with this formula that looks for duplicates "=COUNTIFS($A$7:$A$370,$A7,$B$7:$B$370,$B7,$C$7:$C$370,$C7,$D$7:$D$370,$D7,$E$7:$E$370,$E7,$F$7:$F$370,$F7)>1"
Here, the total list of data goes from row 7 to row 370. When your list gets longer, you can paste this formula into whatever text editor you like and use find&replace to swap the "370" to however far your list goes.
Then under the Data tab, I filter by cell colour, and all the duplicates are gone.
Excel seemed to hate the entries with blank dates, so you have either stop searching the date column, or put dummy values into all those blank cells.

ReplyDeleteperhaps a lame answer, but I would just follow the instructions. I operate under the assumption that when they get 200+ applications, they will take any excuse to remove you from consideration during the first round of cuts. They might make the argument that if you can't follow formatting instructions in a proposal, you've got no chance of landing grants and therefore would not be successful anyway.

DeleteWhy are there seemingly SO MANY biochemist/chem bio positions this year? Is it just because I'm paying attention or is it always this way? My pet theory is that it's because of the looming changes to the MCAT to focus more on biochemistry...

DeleteMany of the positions also seem to want biochemists who can teach Gen Chem and or/Organic, which covers most of the heavy enrollment courses.

DeleteAlso consider that ACS wants to add polymer chemistry to the list of courses that are required for ACS certification. Presumably at most schools there won't be enough enrollment in such a course to justify a full-time faculty position dedicated to it. Therefore you need someone who does DNA or proteins to teach the polymer course, or else an organic materials researcher (I note an increased number of these positions as well)

DeleteThere's still the changes to the MCATs in effect here. Recently they added a biochemistry part to their test, which is increasing numbers of students taking biochemistry. Some schools (PUI's more than R1's) might be expanding after learning their current needs are insufficient.
DeleteAlso, more than just the MCAT change is the move to medical school having 1 semester of organic and 1 semester of biochemistry as pre-requisites instead of 2 semesters of organic.
DeleteThat makes someone who can teach both biochem and organic especially useful, as both will be high enrollment.
It's not official US wide yet, but Harvard is moving to require it and I'd imagine it will be more common in about 5 years, so schools are moving to meet that long-term increase.
Quick note about the wisconsin-madison position: I've heard from a source that they may hire two positions this year, even though the ad sounds like one

ReplyDeleteI have a question: is it absolutely impossible to get work visa sponsorship from a PUI? I have both postdoc and adjunct/teaching experience, and I am mainly applying to jobs at PUI because I would really like to work at a place where teaching undergrads will be a large part of the work. I know work visa sponsorship is expensive, and that is exactly why the school I am currently adjuncting at (which is a PUI) could not offer me a permanent position. If anyone reading this were or are on the search committee of a PUI, or have information/experience about this: is it common for PUIs to not offer work visa sponsorship due to the expense? Would they just throw away my application once they see I require visa sponsorship (which is a question asked on most applications)? I feel like I am stuck because of that...Thank you!
ReplyDeleteMy PUI would offer visa sponsorship if we chose to hire an international applicant. We are going to consider all applicants first on their ability to do the job. We want the best working with us. We want the best for our students.
DeleteIn fact, many universities ask for diversity statements from applicants. This is as much of a show from the department/university that diversity is important to them (i.e. they are looking to maintain or improve upon their levels of diversity both in the student body and the faculty) as it is to leverage information from the applicant. So what what might be a hindrance at once location, cold be marketable as a real benefit at another.
Having said that, there is a level outside of the search committee/department's reach at the administrative level. Primarily this is often due to salary and startup funds, but I could plausibly see visa sponsorship as a roadblock from that administrative level. This has played a role in hiring adjuncts in the past; it's simply too expensive to sponsor a work visa if we know they will be working for us for just a few years. For a full-time position that's would not be the case.
Have a friend who had a bad experience here, they had a tenure-track offer rescinded from a PUI because they didn't want to sponsor a work visa. Trump was just elected and was talking about tearing up NAFTA (friend was eligible for the TN visa), redoing H1B visas etc. The PUI actually said the political climate was a factor for rescinding the offer. Friend extremely upset, but what can anyone do? Just have to swallow it, keep smiling and keep trying!

ReplyDeleteWhat is typically covered in a phone/skype interview? Anybody have some insight or have a good reference?
ReplyDeleteObviously varies, but some common ones I've heard (PUIs mostly): "Why this school?" "Why do you want to teach here?" "What are some challenges you envision during your first few years here? and how will you overcome them?" "Tell us about a time you had to overcome something".
DeletePretty typical interview questions. Some have also asked a lot about research. YMMV
I found the article How to Get a Teaching Job at a PUI (https://www.ascb.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/How-to-get-a-teaching-job.pdf) to be helpful. It has some tips for each step of the process. I found a few other articles through Googling but this was one of the more helpful. Regardless of the institution, they will ask you some questions related to the original job posting so you may be able to figure out a few questions from that.

DeleteI've gotten some of the questions listed above, plus 'how will your research mesh with undergrads?', 'what would you like to teach? would you add a course [upper level or general level]', 'describe some strategies for working with students of diverse backgrounds and ranges of preparation'...
DeleteI have a question: will it be helpful to email the chair of the department or the search committee to introduce yourself after you submit your application? I did that while applying to postdoc positions, and it worked pretty well. However, I am not sure what it is like for applications to faculty positions, and I certainly do not want to do anything that hurt my chance of getting a job. Any input on this? Thank you!

DeleteAnother way to say it - what exactly is left to introduce after your cover letter, CV, teaching statement and proposals? If you haven't covered what you want to say in those, it makes it look like you weren't organized enough there

DeleteI had a phone interview about 2.5 weeks ago, and at the end of it they said they'd contact me in a week or two regarding onsite interviews. Could I send a followup email inquiring about the status, or just let it go? I hate waiting in limbo...
ReplyDeleteSame to you here. But I did not contact them. If you very curious about this, it's no hurt to ask.
DeleteI would say maybe give it another week. If they said "a week or two", you should give them a little more time just in case. Any time after 3 weeks I think it's perfectly reasonable to send a follow up email.

ReplyDeleteIs it usual to get a rejection letter? Like, in Europe, if you are not selected to be in the shortlist, you always get a rejection letter saying "Dear Dr. Bla bla, you are perfect, we are sorry, you get no offer, bla bla, all the best with your career". Is this the case with USA R1 schools?
ReplyDeleteI've been told this is not done until the new faculty is actually there because in case they bail out the committee does not have to relaunch the search. More than one faculty member has told me this.

CJ took a survey of candidates on the job hunt last year and reported some of the numbers. Unfortunately, I can't find those postings to save my life right now.
