Radio show: Saturday, October 7, noon Eastern with Lisa Balbes

Looking forward to talking with Dr. Lisa Balbes (of Balbes Consultants LLC, and author of the excellent "Nontraditional Careers for Chemists: New Formulas for Chemistry Careers") on Saturday, October 7 at noon Eastern.

Questions for the audience:
  • Got a resume that you'd like us to review live on the air? We will actually do this (discreetly, of course)
  • Got a cover letter that you'd like us to review (anonymously) live on the air?
  • How is the market these days?
  • What would you like us to cover? Some topics will be pre-chosen (e.g. How Do You Define A Chemist?), some are up to you.
Leave suggestions in the comments, or e-mail me: chemjobber@gmail.com

  1. 1. What are the most valuable traits of a chemist that are useful in a nontraditional role?
    2. Is it a one-way trip? Can you ever come back from a nontraditional roll to a lab setting roll?

  2. Are there any trends in the field of chemistry employment that you are optimistic about? any that make you pessimistic?

  3. Does Lisa have any opinion on the candidates running for ACS office right now? (CJ can answer too but might not to be impartial)

    1. I am actually a member of ACS' committee on Nominations and Elections, so help to select the nominees and candidates. Therefore, I know they are all excellent and would do a great job.

  4. Are there specific job search portals or contracting companies that you find are geared towards chemists or at least reasonably understand chemistry?

  5. Is there a list or job board or professional society for technical writing?
