Unemployment rate for December 2012 at 7.8%, U6 at 14.4%

Fresh electrons from the Bureau of Labor Statistics: the national unemployment rate for December 2012 was 7.8% and the broader U6 rate is 14.4%. The national unemployment rate for November 2012 was revised up by 0.1% to 7.8%. Both rates for December are the same for the current November values.

155,000 non-farm payroll jobs were created; the number of long-term (more than 6 months) unemployed "was essentially unchanged at 4.8 million and accounted for 39.1 percent of the unemployed."

Chemical manufacturing employment is up 4,300 positions to 799,600 employed.
