Chemistry recruiting at Harvard: slight drop from 2010

Source material: Harvard CCB Corporate Recruiting
This is the 3rd annual analysis of corporate recruiting at Harvard's Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. As the graph at right shows, the recruiting season (so far) indicates a slight drop from 2010.

It's surprising to me that corporate recruiting has not recovered back to 2008 levels. It's certainly not a pleasant statistic to see, and it's yet more evidence that even the most elite among us is not immune to the Tyranny of the Negative Slope of our times.

  1. Yikes.
CJ, Have you ever tried contacting anyone at Harvard's Chem dept/career center about this? I'm just wondering if they've got any personal insights on who is coming/not coming. Or if the people who aren't coming never hired much from them in the past.

  2. CJ, bear in mind that a bunch of companies from 2006 (e.g., Schering-Plough and Wyeth) are no longer around. Anyway, I'm surprised to see petroleum and polymers/materials companies recruiting at Harvard. Don't get me wrong; I'm not questioning the overall prestige of the school an its chemistry program. It's just that MIT seems to be a better place to recruit for those types of expertise.

That's a really good point, but I only count 3 places that no longer exist: S-P, Wyeth and Praecis. Then again, there could be more.

You're probably right about the sector recruiting for Harvard; that said, I like tracking the same set of statistics and Harvard makes it easy.

  4. Umh, er: 4 places. Metabasis is gone, too.
