Well, it had to happen

I see my coauthor Alex Goldberg has challenged me (along with Derek Lowe and Carmen Drahl) to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. I am honored to be included among them. Guess I'll get a bucket and a towel.

  1. I see they managed to clean all the bat feces off of the Daniel Sieff building before this video was shot.

  2. Bat feces? Is there a story behind that?

    1. There is no story.

Okay... maybe a small one. When Weizmann was still alive he planted lots of stuff around the building in order to keep dust from the desert away in the summers. After he died and the institute became bigger, they started planting trees all over the place in his memory or something. The most popular were gigantic African trees that grew branches all spready out like and covered everything with shade. These trees are also quite popular with fruit bats, maybe even the same species as back in Africa. They are huge and fly around at night and as they defecate during flight (thankfully out of the way of people), they hit the building. Once in a while, I guess they come and wash the walls.

So... no real story. Just like there is no joke in this comic about fruit bats:

    2. I saw a dead giant fruit bat lying on the ground a while ago... I'm glad none of the cats decided to play with it. More scary than a rocket alarm.

  4. This ice bucket challenge is peanuts. You really should try ice swimming.
