Let's play "find the actual scientist!"

Posed pictures of science company CEOs are always funny. A respected reader sent in this Boston Business Journal picture of Sarepta CEO Ed Kaye; there's some sciencey-activity going on in the background. I'd like to know what the person on the left is doing with the empty dessicator?

  1. Hmm, it looks like it's situated near a vacuum manifold. Maybe he's setting it up to place it under vacuum? But of course, that could be done in a simpler fashion because who keeps desiccators in fume hoods?

    1. Actually, I have--in some cases, a dessicator with isoflurane-soaked gauze under the divider is a good way to rapidly anesthetize large numbers of rodents, but you have to be careful about the iso vapor migrating as you open and close the dessicator (hence the hood).

But I'm guessing that's not what's going on here... it looks like an in vitro or chem lab, there are no rodents to be seen, and as noted below, the lab coats are suspiciously free of, um, rodent byproducts.

    2. Nobody takes their marketing photos in animal labs with euthanizing equipment.

  2. Look at the CEO's lab coat. Has to be the first time it was worn. Reminiscent of the Ph.D. Comics movie where the new grad student takes the pristine lab coat off the rack and the others are shocked - it is the professor's.

  3. Hmm... Why is there one person with a hair net? Are the rest contaminating a GMP area?

  4. Not one lab notebook, computer, or paper in sight. Hope these folks have good memories or else all the fake science they are doing will be lost!

    1. Confirmed? Looks like Ty Howton, Senior Vice President, General Counsel. http://www.sarepta.com/company/senior-leadership

  5. Dude with the desiccator looks like a business guy. No safety glasses, nice slacks and shoes. I'd peg him for executive team as he looks a little bit upset about being in the background. Or perhaps he is a scientist that knows how stupid he looks playing with the desiccator.

    2. Maybe he thinks the desiccator is a glass cookie jar.

What. no chocolate chip? Waaaa, I wanna go home!

  6. also the guy on the left-hand side, in front of the hood: is he wearing safety glasses? Also, as far as I can see, all of the lab coats look suspiciously clean.
