Anyone know anything about brain cancer treatment at Duke?

A reader would like to know about the reputation of the Tisch Brain Center at Duke University Hospital? (not for them, but for a friend)

How does one evaluate hospitals and their effectiveness for treatment of life-threatening diseases, anyway?

  1. I know over 25 years ago they where considered one of world leaders in that area as our CFO went there for treatment (from CA) but no clue as to current ranking. I know such statistics are gathered to rate facilities and MD but without checking myself I assume search the intranet may provide someone ranking but who knows how reliable.

Our CMO is an oncologist who often has a good pulse on such things so is how I typically gather such intel however she is out currently after a knee replacement or I would ask her about this.

  2. My cousin went there for an assessment and hopeful treatment (has had many brain tumors and spinal cancer over his life). They claimed there was nothing they could do for him yet six months later, the cancer was treated elsewhere and completely eradicated.

  3. I know a 2 year old who was treated there and successfully had a brain tumor removed at Duke University Hospital (I'm assuming this was done at the Tisch Brain Center). She is now 4 and tumor free. The staff there was excellent, although I will note that it ended up requiring a second surgery a few months later, but I don't really think it was through any fault of the surgeon.
