Daily Pump Trap: 10/4/11 edition

Good morning! Between September 29 and October 3, there were 93 new positions posted on the ACS Careers website. Of these, 35 (38%) are academically connected.

You, or you, or you: Brewer Science (Springfield, MO) has been hiring off and on for a couple of years now. I find it amusing that they're looking for a postdoc or a M.S. chemist or someone with enough education and experience for the position, which will entail analytical chemistry and synthetic chemistry. It's a 12-month contract, convertible to permanent. Ooooooh.

You'll be able to live well: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign would like to offer postdocs and graduate students a chance to compete for the Springborn Fellowships. You're guaranteed $33,000 as a graduate student (for 3 years) and $45,000 as a postdoc. Good God, a living wage!

Let's read between the lines, my friends: Spectra Systems Corporation (located in beautiful Providence, RI) is looking for a B.S. chemist to be a Product Engineer. Let's look at what they want you to do:

To interchangeably share responsibilities with the Sr. Product Engineer and the Product Manager for the manufacturing operations, maintaining product inventory and supply of raw material, and for conducting all necessary in-house production procedures and QC/QA testing of Spectra’s Materials Group manufactured products and raw materials.

These products include, but are not necessarily limited to, currency-grade fluorescent pigments, fiber products, and specialty inks and coatings. The position will require the candidate to quickly become knowledgeable and familiar with all such related tasks for all of Spectra’s materials products, as well as to work with the materials team in helping create new products, procedures, and documentation. Additional responsibilities include: 1) Maintain a complete set of up-to-date documentation related to the materials production. 2) Act as primary Point Of Contact for interacting with vendors to determine pricing and availability information including bulk pricing quotations.

Everything. You want this poor schmoe to do everything that you don't want to do. 'Kay.

Macon, GA: Kamin, LLC desires a M.S./Ph.D. chemist for process development and R&D. Kamin is a manufacturer of clays.

Detroit, MI: Henkel would like a B.S./M.S./Ph.D. chemist with 3+ years experience with inorganic or organic coatings, specifically for corrosion protection. A polymer chemistry position is also available.

Merck: Our friends from Rahway are still at their old tricks, posting a healthy 48 positions, or 52% of the total. My favorite? The inscrutable position "Spirit Spec Distrib-icwu Job", which includes the awesome job description "Accurately picking and palletizing customer orders to meet efficiency targets in a fast paced distribution environment."

  1. Speaking of Rahway-Lot of tumult there. Many people are worried in light of recent news from the upper management that something will happen by the end of the month. May be these are "phantom" positions that will be never filled. I wish to be proved wrong.

  2. I had heard from a former colleague that the chemists were told last week that they'd be notified about layoffs in two weeks time. In the meantime, they were all instructed to clean their lab areas prior to the announcement. Anyone else verify this?

Rumors for months have been that chemistry will be moving to the Schering site, at least whomever survives the cuts.

  3. You are Pfizered...You got it right dude! People are shitting on their pants. What they do not know is if they survive the cut at the present time(meaning you will be at Rahway site for now) there is no guarantee that you will be there for..who knows how long? Pure torture! May be Peter Kim is taking everyone out of Rahway site.
