Oh man, that C&EN Onion article was well written. But as I was reading it, I realized it would be funny if I was a first or second year grad student or a BSD prof in their sixties and close to retirement, because all I could feel was sadness. Constant meetings with admins who left research a long time ago and who talk about impact factors, the importance of having a 'regular' output, about how it's bad to be perceived as non-ambitious, etc... really beat it out of you. Makes me want to stay home and watch TV instead of going to the lab. And I'm one of the people who is actually doing okay on metrics.
